to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

@DillonPanthersTexas

Unless I am in a very swish part of town I just assume all designer gear I see on people is fake.
Me too. I also look at the rest of the outfit, and if the person does not have an amazing pair of shoes or a fabulous watch or an expensive car, then I assume it is a fake.

I would never buy LV as there are so many fakes about. I have a Mulberry (basic crossbody Anthony) but I even see lots of fakes of those now and it makes me sad.

23% of posters own LV bags then Wink.

I agree with you, but then again, I do like some logo'd rucksacks so maybe I am a hypocrite. For me it's Vans, Kanken etc. Though I suppose never just a plain rucksack just for the logo, it's the style, colour block or particular design on them I go for. And they are no way close to the price of a designer handbag so it's definitely not for showing off.

CrappleUmble · 08/10/2020 13:31

Yeah I must admit I wouldn't necessarily assume it was genuine.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 08/10/2020 13:31

I see your LV and I raise you Goyard - twice as expensive and twice as ugly...

Onadifferentuniverse · 08/10/2020 13:31

Totally agree, but you can say the same about most things? Particularly cars.

Money talks.

diamondpony80 · 08/10/2020 13:31

I do think they're ugly and I wouldn't buy one, however I have a Mulberry that I love and I bought it because I liked it. Definitely not trying to make any statement and none of my friends would care anyway.

AuntyPasta · 08/10/2020 13:32

The ones that have the LV monogram all over them are rather ‘porn star aspirational’ as someone said.

theemmadilemma · 08/10/2020 13:33

I agree, and I have one. It's a slice of an old me who thought that crap was important for some unknown reason.

One thing I will give the monogrammed canvas is that it's bloody nearly indestructible. It's been chucked around on a beach, various floors, had gloss paint on it (and easily removed!) and it's not looking shite.

But I don't use it anymore preciously because it's soooo LOOK AT ME!!!!

movingonup20 · 08/10/2020 13:33

Can't stand clothes and accessories with logos. It's so pretentious and show off. My handbag was £10 from asda and I've lost count how many compliments I've had, people assume it's designer! I wreck bags so never spend more than £20

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 13:34

I always wanted a Mulberry Bayswater and treated myself. It’s never used because it’s so damned heavy even when it’s empty. Lesson well and truly learnt.

ILikeTrains · 08/10/2020 13:34

Yes I agree it is show offy, but I don't see anything wrong with that. I know lots of people that like to show off the things they can afford. And who knows, one day when I'm rich I might choose to buy show offy things too, but for now it will have to be a fake leather handbag from Primark Grin

Completely agree OP - they’re really ugly.
Someone gave me one once and I never used it.
In terms of quality, the fakes are pretty good so they can’t be much differentiation !

I would definitely have a Range Rover though if the PP doesn’t want hers Grin

BrazenlyDefying · 08/10/2020 13:37

I volunteer in a charity shop and we see a LOT of "LV" handbags. I have seen so, so many fakes of designer handbags that my first thought when seeing a bag like that is that it's a fake.

Especially LV with the monogram. I don't think "oh wow, a £2k handbag", I think "How tacky, a 4 euro knock-off from a market".

AbsoolutelyKnott · 08/10/2020 13:38

I'd say the majority of designer stuff is ugly. But people don't buy it because they like the look of it, they buy because it makes them look better/higher class/richer. Money can't buy style though Grin Which is why you will see people rocking this bag like they're a celeb, when in reality they paid £1,200 to advertise a company that they don't even own Blush

VintageStitchers · 08/10/2020 13:39

I prefer to make/sew my own bags. Far more exclusive. Grin

rosesandcashmere · 08/10/2020 13:42

I got one because it's the only decent quality I could find that's also light enough for hand luggage.
My most expensive bag is LV but plain black and heavy. My mulberry bags are also heavy. Gucci too small. I work hard for my money I can buy what I want but no I don't buy them to 'show off'

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 13:42

It’s not monogrammed ‘leather’ it’s monogrammed canvas. No one’s pretending it’s leather...

Ugly is subjective, I think. I’m not all that keen on the traditional monogram unless it’s on vintage luggage. I do like the newer patterns. But I am quite put off by the multitudes of fakes around, and also by the tribe that tends to wear the real thing. It’s not exactly elegant, in a lot of cases. But I’m still planning to buy a couple at some point, because I know I can wear them well.

Like anything else, it’s all in how you wear it.

But on the thread title, sure, I accept that maybe 25% of my love for designer handbags is tied up in perceived status. I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t matter at all - of course it does, or I probably wouldn’t pay the premium. But most of it is love for the craftsmanship, the quality and the design language. A beautiful handbag makes me very happy.

The fakes absolutely are not pretty good. You can always tell when it’s fake.
SurreyHillsGirl · 08/10/2020 13:45

@Time2change2

Absolute pretentious crap along with most other designer goods. To be honest it hugely affects my opinion of friends or strangers when I see them with a bag or very high end designer item.
To be fair I doubt v much that anyone cares what someone like you thinks Grin
Leimarel · 08/10/2020 13:45

What is vegan leather? Is it the same stuff we used to call vinyl?

ReeseWitherknife · 08/10/2020 13:45

Anything with loud designer labels are tacky imo much prefer unique stuff. As the saying goes:-
“We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like.”

SurreyHillsGirl · 08/10/2020 13:46

@Beefcurtains79

Well don’t buy one then? You sound a bit unpleasant.
Yep, you have nailed it. You have to be v bitter to start a thread like this.
ifiwasascent · 08/10/2020 13:46

I went on the chase to try and win money for mine. I didn't win then I got a 6 month promotion in work so paid for it then. I worked hard to get mine so you're being quite judgmental!

SurreyHillsGirl · 08/10/2020 13:47

@edwinbear

Not to my taste at all, I much prefer understated, I have a rather lovely Aspinal that I took all the padlocks and stuff off, so it's very plain and simple. But each to their own.
Oh aren't you just so.. chic

HUGE EYE ROLL
