to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

Perhaps - just perhaps - some people love the monogrammed look? Just saying.... not Everyone buys expensive things to show off. We all have different tastes, you know?

mamaonamission · 08/10/2020 13:07

@Laaalaaaa same🤷🏻‍♀️ but I think others a lil bitter

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/10/2020 13:11

As you say, we all use things like clothes and accessories and trappings to construct our image so why should it be seen as negative thing to have a bag which you feel conveys “I’ve done really well for myself and that means I can afford the things I really like”? Taste is subjective” I have a couple of LV items which I think are beautiful; they also make many items which I think are ugly, so I wouldn’t buy them. Same as anything else, surely?

sqirrelfriends · 08/10/2020 13:12

Honestly, every time I see one I just assume it's fake.

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 13:15

The thing that puts me off most is that market stalls in European holiday resorts are awash with fakes. LV is the most knocked off brand in the world. Quite apart from thinking they’re the height of ugliness, like a pp I always assume when I see one that it’s fake.

ChronicallyCurious · 08/10/2020 13:16

Ugly to you.

I have multiple Louis Vuitton items and I think they are all beautiful, although I find that one in your OP hideous. 😂

I don’t buy them so show off how ‘wealthy’ I am. I’m not particularly wealthy I just like nice things. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke and have nothing else I really spend my spare money on but I am partial to nice bags and shoes. I recently added a Gucci bag to my collection and I can’t explain it but designer bags just make me feel some kind of way. Nothing to do with how anyone else views me.

chunkyrun · 08/10/2020 13:16

I just assume that they're fake

Worldgonecrazy · 08/10/2020 13:17

I prefer their non monogrammed bags but had a very hard working popincourt long that went everywhere with me and was a bit like Hermiones magic bag in that anything and everything could fit in it. Sadly they no longer make that style.

I’m fortunate enough to have had a private visit to their factory just outside Paris, and their ethics and training were laudable . I’m more than happy to spend extra to support them.

Cadent · 08/10/2020 13:17

I can afford one but yes I can’t mentally justify spending the money. Plus I inevitably destroy my handbags as carry lunch sometimes so just not worth the risk.

Is the Neverfull tote £1200 now? They were £800 at Westfield a few years ago and the assistant advises to get it as they just keep going up n price.

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 13:18

I’m not disagreeing! I have one LV that currently retails for 4 times what I paid for it and the other 3 times. Resale market for those 2 would give me double my purchase price. A wise investment too I think.

Leylafrenchie · 08/10/2020 13:20

I have others branded bags in that price range but not LV as a lot of people presume they are fake.

I also don’t buy designer stuff to show off. I buy it because I like it.

LaBellina · 08/10/2020 13:20

I have a few of them from when I was younger and really cared about image.
Now I rather buy a real leather one and I refuse to pay a lot of money for bags made of cheaper materials that are expensive because of the brand. I'd never buy one of those nylon Prada bags now but 15 years ago I would have. I do appreciate brands that honour craftmanship such as Tod's and Bottega Veneta but those bags and shoes are also very overpriced.

I think the largest is £1090. I remember them at half the price!
Janegrey333 · 08/10/2020 13:21

I think they’re unattractive due to the horrible advertising splattered all over them. I do think they are tacky - no matter how much they cost. I could afford to buy one but have no desire to.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 08/10/2020 13:23

You’re not wrong, they’re very ugly.

Holyrivolli · 08/10/2020 13:23

Yep. They’re vulgar, tacky and anything with big logos on it is designed to show off their supposed wealth to others.

ChaChaCha2012 · 08/10/2020 13:24

Porn star aspirational.

SurferRona · 08/10/2020 13:24

Agree OP. Would people who buy them have bought them if they were logo-free? That’s the acid test to me. I have secondhand expensive bags, not identifiable in that way, but treat ‘em as exactly that- bags. I carry shopping in them, lunches, wet brollies. Don’t see the point in spending a lot on things then not using them tbh

Angelina82 · 08/10/2020 13:26

Totally agree. They are hideous.

honeygirlz · 08/10/2020 13:27

Here is one I picked up in a market. I can tell the difference but I still like it!

They have plenty of bags that are not in the most known monogram canvas that offends you all. A lot of beautiful leather bags with subtle detail - but don’t let that get in the way of screaming that they are tacky.
Tinkity · 08/10/2020 13:28

Er... the part you’re missing is that designer handbags can often be investment pieces, for example:

  1. The second hand market for designer handbags is booming & certain bags / designs will retain a large part of their value. So yes, while A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too) is true, those lesser known bags will have virtually no value on the second hand market so you’ve blown your money whereas you stand to get a large chunk of your money back with a LV which you can then put towards your next handbag
  1. Certain bags including some limited editions can INCREASE in value so you can also make money whilst enjoying the bag
Tunnocks34 · 08/10/2020 13:29

I like them tbh. Can’t afford one though.

I do have a vintage Burberry bag, full nova pattern which was a gift from my great nana. I love it but no doubt some one will come along spouting how ‘garish’ they are.

I don’t care - life is too short to take on the opinions of others.

RonaRossi · 08/10/2020 13:29

I think anything with an obvious label is tacky and designed to show off

This. You can spend an absolute fortune on shoes and bags and clothes easily without being able to immediately tell where it’s from.

When I see someone displaying obvious designer labels, fake or real, I internally eye roll because it’s so obviously (for whatever reason) and cringingly try-hard.

CrappleUmble · 08/10/2020 13:29

I don't find them at all aesthetically pleasing either, but it's possible there might be some people who would want them if the branding didn't mean what it does. Not as many as buy them now probably, but I don't think you can assume the number would be zero.
