to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

three years ago we were in Paris on the champs de lece and it was coming up for my birthday OH said how about i buy you something from LV as a birthday present fine till he saw the prices, haha that were not going to happen so instead we went over to Tiffanys and he bought me my georgous classic return to Tiffanys bracelet for a fraction of the price of LV i dont wear it very often but much better value for money

SurreyHillsGirl · 08/10/2020 13:50

@Tunnocks34

I like them tbh. Can’t afford one though.

I do have a vintage Burberry bag, full nova pattern which was a gift from my great nana. I love it but no doubt some one will come along spouting how ‘garish’ they are.

I don’t care - life is too short to take on the opinions of others.

If only everyone was as honest as you. Instead it's jealousy and bitterness dressed up as, 'I'm so classy that I wouldn't be seen dead in anything designer'. Bollocks you wouldn't if you had the cash Grin Grin
ElspethFlashman · 08/10/2020 13:52

I disagree that leather = better.

Some leather looks great with age. Other leather cracks and starts to look quite shabby. The corners can get pretty battered etc.

The canvas LV bags are absolutely bulletproof. I have a piece of luggage for the past 10 years which hasn't a scuff on it.

It also has massive resale value.

So dont knock it until you've tried it.

PandaCub7 · 08/10/2020 13:54

Whenever I see a LV bag, I think it’s fake. There’s too many around. LV designs are distinctive. I agree with you OP, I bet most people get them so people instantly think they have a designer bag.

Tunnocks34 · 08/10/2020 13:54

For sure @SurreyHillsGirl. I’d also swap my Kia Sportage for Range Rover too 🤣

PseudoSudocrem · 08/10/2020 13:54

My thought on LV bags is that if you had one everyone would assume it was a fake, so why bother?

Personally I think they are hideous.

DynamoKev · 08/10/2020 13:55

It really isn’t. I traded in my Rolex (it was a gift) for a watch I preferred that was much less obviously expensive. People used to notice my Rolex and it made me uncomfortable.

doctorhamster · 08/10/2020 13:55

I think there's definitely an element of that with the ones that have the brand plastered all over them. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone with one in real life...always wondered who was buying them!

Kaylia76 · 08/10/2020 13:56

This is ridiculous, you can make the argument about anything.

"It's tacky to buy a big 4 bedroom house if you only need 2 bedrooms" blah blah.

Some LV things are lovely, the logo is established and well known. For example, Van Cleef pendant/bracelets are an established design, you get the odd knock off, but no one thinks Grace Kelly is tacky for wearing one.

Just don't buy one, stop being jealous.

Cheetosforbreakfast · 08/10/2020 13:59

No, not really. I have a Bag that cosT 1500. I got it because I love it. I doubt have loads of anything, like shoes, I have one pair of going out shoes that I wear with everything that were £600. I have friends that have absolutely loads and they probably spent way more than that. It’s not to show off. I’m equally happy with cheaper stuff.

Anordinarymum · 08/10/2020 13:59

Well I love LV and I don't care what they say.

I have a 'Neverful' bag which I use from time to time. It always looks nice no matter how much I abuse it.

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 14:01

And here we go. Thinking something is tacky, despite being perfectly able to afford it if you wanted it, equates to being jealous. Definitely not jealous, you’d have to pay me a lot of money to use a LV bag. I’d definitely be jealous of anyone with a Hermes Birkin though.

user1481840227 · 08/10/2020 14:01

I just think LV is very ugly.
I don't mind logos ever but then I love 90s fashion and i'm delighted that it's back lol!

user1481840227 · 08/10/2020 14:01

*logos all over

Bluegrass · 08/10/2020 14:02

If people like other, far more subtle, examples of high end products, the whole “you’re just jealous” accusation really doesn’t work. Walking around like an advertising billboard just isn’t a great look.

HandfulofDust · 08/10/2020 14:03

No idea but they look hideous to me (but then I'm a scruff bag so what do I know). Wouldn't an ostentatiously expensive handbag make you a bit of a beacon for muggers too?

Elphame · 08/10/2020 14:03

I have a couple of LV bags that I was given but never use. One's a backpack which really isn't my style and the other is a make up bag but it's too small to be useful

Should put them on ebay I guess

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/10/2020 14:04

@sqirrelfriends

Honestly, every time I see one I just assume it's fake.
me too
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 08/10/2020 14:05

I could afford one and really like the size and shape of the Neverfull (just wish it zipped) but I could never ever justify spending over a grand on a what is in essence a canvas bag with leather trim. £1000 on a canvas bag covered in advertising?! Nope.

But I wish I could find a similarly shaped / sized bag in leather, that zipped. I’d pay for that.

user1485461206 · 08/10/2020 14:06

I have some with logos done without
Presents mainly because I always wanted one from my teen years.
And obviously I do aspire to be a porn star...it’s on my to do list this week

user1485461206 · 08/10/2020 14:07

Some without

Perro · 08/10/2020 14:09

As my very insightful 12 year old ds says, only idiots would pay over the odds to buy something which is logo’d and so further advertises the brand for free Grin

thereisonlyoneofme · 08/10/2020 14:10

All designer gear that shows a logo is obtaining free advertising from anyone buying it. I wouldnt want to wear anything, designer tops etc that made me look like an advertising hoarding. No bag is worth the money some designer bags cost,

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 14:10

The make up bag could perhaps make a useful pouch to keep in your handbag...
SonjaMorgan · 08/10/2020 14:11

I am more of a max mara girl but LV can look lovely when styled right. I kind of like the misspelled Gucci stuff and some of the off white bits that I am sure some would class as tacky but I only buy secondhand and I am far too poor at the moment.
