to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

That was meant to be a reply to @LuaDipa’S post.

I was dying for one when I was a teen.

How I completely agree with you - they're ugly!

LongPauseNoAnswer · 08/10/2020 14:47

I have a few high end designer bags and I consider them an investment piece. They've increased significantly in price since I bought them. By the time my daughter inherits my bags they might easily be worth 4 to 5 times what I paid for them.

But I hate the monogrammed LV bags because they always manage to look fake.

The luxury fashion houses actually do amazing after care. For example one of my bags got accidentally scratched and they sent a courier to get it from my house to take it to Paris where it was repaired by the person who made it. The hardware was polished and the whole thing was cleaned and came back to me like it was brand new.

@rainydayslover

I usually get myself one once a year to treat myself. I save up as I used to smoke, so the cigarette money would go towards a luxury branded bag. Personally, I don't like LV and any of its styles. There are other brands such as Prada, YSL, Chanel (too expensive for me) and Gucci that do better bags. I have friends who dress from Primark but invest in expensive handbags. I only wear my handbag for an occasion as I don't want to ruin it wearing it on a trip to Tesco's. I do agree with your statement but decades ago, people used to wear expensive jewellery to make that statement but now it's just handbags, coats and vehicles.
And shoes. Christian Louboutin red soles..
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/10/2020 14:47

I'm pretty sure that 99% of those I see worn on my local high street are fake so not sure I agree.

Not my cup of tea but we all decide for ourselves what we spend our dosh on. I've about 5 beautiful designer handbags (not LV) which I love and take very good care of. I hope to get many more years wear from them before giving them to DD when she's old enough to appreciate the craftsmanship that went in to making them.

I'd actually judge someone for knowingly buying knock off designer goods for the part they play in the drugs/trafficking supply chain.

PhlegmyHead · 08/10/2020 14:49

Are people actually buying them as "investments"??
It's a pretty risky investment if so, far better to invest in an equity fund or something - something that you can't totally trash by spilling your tea on it.

woofwoof1880 · 08/10/2020 14:50

Some people like the designs so that's why they buy them.

What's wrong with someone buying a bag to display their wealth anyway?

Do you live in a bedsit in bad area just so you don't look like your showing off by displaying your wealth by living in a street where all homes are £750k+?

Frauhubert · 08/10/2020 14:53

I have one (speedy) and I really like wearing it. For years I thought they were hideous and tacky, until I went out with a friend one night and I jokingly asked if I could pose for a photo with her LV handbag (with intention to laugh at it later). When I held the bag and saw the photo I just fell in love with the bag on the spot. Went and bought it a week later

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/10/2020 14:54

If anyone spilt tea on one of mine that would be the end of that friendship Grin

How much did you pay for that?

I wouldn't recognise one if it hit me in the eye.

‘The fakes absolutely are not pretty good. You can always tell when it’s fake’

Errr no you can’t.

An ex-friend* of mine took her Mulberry bag to the pub and someone spilt a beer on it. I'm pretty sure she almost punched them.

*not ex-friend because of her obsession with designer bags, before anyone starts. An ex-friend cause she borrowed hundreds of pounds from me then buggered off

I don't get the attraction of handbags at all. I have a one for practical reasons but I wouldn't pay over £20 for one. Its the same with shoes, I just don't get itConfused

XmasEveshopper · 08/10/2020 15:02

Bottega Veneta had a motto for their bags that they've been using since the 70's 'When your own initials are enough' which seems to be a huge dig at LV and some of the other brands out there. They do some lovely ones and you get a few ripoffs but not in the same league as LV. I like to buy second hand from Vestiaire and other online shops for clothes as well as bags. My favourite BV one at the moment that I'm tempted by is this mammoth one

Hiccupiscal · 08/10/2020 15:02

I always assume they're fakes!

amusedtodeath1 · 08/10/2020 15:03

It's not LV specifically for me, but anything with the brand name splashed about all over it. I really don't care what you wear, I'm interested in the person you are, and sadly in my experience a lot (not all though) of people who wear this stuff seem overly focused on the superficial.

Besides, I'd feel like a fool if I spent thousands on a bag when you can get really high quality leather bags for £100-200. Quality matters, labels don't IMO.

JoJoSM2 · 08/10/2020 15:03

I’ve got almost the exact bag you posted (same style but little square pattern and different trim colour). It’s canvas and not leather (except the trim). It weighs about 5grams and fits in tons of stuff whilst looking quite small. You can wear it cross body or on one shoulder with the adjustment taking 3 seconds. It sits really well and doesn’t dig into the shoulder. If the strap wears out, you can have that replaced but it’s proving very sturdy for me.

To sum up, it’s a brilliant bag and YABU.

If you’ve watched ‘construction’ videos, you sound like you’d like to be able to buy it? I’m sure some people buy it for the logo (and usually wear cheap stuff otherwise as that’s the one thing they saved up for) but there are people who can afford things and like it for it’s incredible practicality and sturdiness.

WhoWants2Know · 08/10/2020 15:05

I would consider it if they paid me for advertising space.

Arthersleep · 08/10/2020 15:06

It's also about lacking in confidence and having no creativity to choose something more personal. You'd have to be pretty insecure or a bit of a mug in order to be prepared to pay so much for the privilege of being an unpaid bill board for a company and someone else to become rich! That's what I find bizarre about people who wear their labels on the outside.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/10/2020 15:08

OP you seem a tad determined to judge those who do enjoy designer bags Hmm

I'm sorry that ex friend treated you so badly though, that's pretty shoddy behaviour.

catlovingdoctor · 08/10/2020 15:11

Live and let live...🤷‍♂️

gigi556 · 08/10/2020 15:15

I have one that was given to me as a gift. Actually, it's a knock off but a very good expensive knock off and you can't tell the difference. I'm actually embarrassed to use it because people think it's real (no reason to suspect otherwise) and I think it's too showy.

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 15:21

@NoProblem123

‘The fakes absolutely are not pretty good. You can always tell when it’s fake’

Errr no you can’t.

Yes you can.

Genuine ‘replicas’ of the kind one might be able to source from the actual factories and supply line are a different matter. But I don’t condone buying those. If I’m going to benefit from the craftsmanship, quality and design language, I’m going to pay for it fair and square.

areyoubeingserviced · 08/10/2020 15:22

I have Chanel, Mulberry, Gucci and a few other designer bags. I love all of them they are beautifully made .However, I am not too fond of the monogram bag. Dh bought be a black LV monogram travel bag . I don’t have the heart to tell him that I don’t like it. I think it just looks showy and flash. That’s just my opinion
