I’ve been furloughed so I’m watching far too much Netflix.

Anyway, I’ve just binged Life on Mars and I’m now on Ashes to Ashes, and can I just say that Gene Hunt makes me swoon. To quote a mumsnet classic, he gives me the fanny gallops!

I don’t even care if I’m being unreasonable Grin

My fave bit is when GH says to ST, when they’re agreeing that they’re both right about sth they’re disagreeing on:
“Aye. Just as long as I’m more right than you.”

DP insists, after seeing this, that if I was a bloke I’d be Gene Hunt.

elenacampana · 09/05/2020 16:16

Gene Hunt is imo the best character to ever hit British TV. He’s just... just!

missmouse101 · 10/05/2020 17:49

Fworrrrrrrrr! Does he know Gene Hunt had such an effect?!

alittlerespectgoesalongway · 11/05/2020 19:54

It's the relationship between gene hunt and sam tyler I find fascinating. What is that? Sam reacts strangely to his aggression. Almost loves it? At the same time as hating it? Mesmerising.

IndieTara · 11/05/2020 20:06

I'm just having to re binge watch Life on Mars

MinnieAnonyMouse · 11/05/2020 20:50

Oh lordy... now I'm gonna have to rewatch.

He could arrest me all night long.

MaggieFS · 12/05/2020 20:56

I would love it if they could come back and do a 90s version!

Fuss · 13/05/2020 10:12

Something I missed completely in the first watch of this is all the references to the Wizard of Oz.
Gene repeatedly calls Sam 'Dorothy', tells him to take the Yellow Brick Road and one of the 'important' characters (not naming names to avoid spoilers) has the same name as an actor key to the Wizard of Oz storyline.
I'm sure there are more references than I've got so far!

IndieTara · 13/05/2020 17:44

The 80's Gene Hunt is so much sexier than 1973 version

CaptainAthena · 15/05/2020 14:37

I've just binged the whole thing, I watched and loved LoM the first time around but missed AtA.

Oh my god I'm so traumatised by the ending, it was brilliant and I cried buckets but two days later I'm still sad. Loved the chemistry between Gene and Alex (and Gene and Sam in a different way). I had an unexpected romantic dream about DI Carling last night and now I'm worried about my subconsciousBlushGrin

ScarletFever · 15/05/2020 14:57

oh yeah! also watching for the first time since it was out originally....

mmmmmmmm!!!

RuudGullitOnAShed · 16/05/2020 23:12

Inspired by this thread I'm doing a complete rewatch.
In real life if a man said something along the lines of "Strong women give me the horn" I'd be repulsed but when Gene says it I go weak at the knees.
Mind you, I loved PG when he played Mac in Clocking Off- - I remember being bemused when his young wife left him because she was bored - he could bore me all day long!

ScarletFever · 17/05/2020 21:49

Oh.

The last episode.

IdentifyasTired · 17/05/2020 21:52

God I loved Gene Hunt. Absolutely adored him when I watched Life in Mars.
Ended up marrying a somewhat similar man. Bad tempered, gives no shits type of man. I clearly have a type.
YADNBU

CaptainAthena · 17/05/2020 21:54

@ScarletFever are you ok?

I'm still not over it Grin

mondaywine · 17/05/2020 21:59

Philip Glenister played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at the Lyceum in Edinburgh in 1991. I ended up going to see it twice with my pal purely because of his performance on stage and waited at the stage door to meet him.
Almost 30 years on I can still remember it. He’s ace!

‘tis not so deep as a well nor so wide as a church-door, but 'tis enough, 'twill serve.’

ScarletFever · 17/05/2020 22:04

@CaptainAthena no, they watched the H&S videos (no spoilers)

I dont remember all that from the first time i watched it - i remember thinking though that it was what Lost was trying to do, but failed

SilverLiningSearching · 17/05/2020 22:28

If I was his IRL DP I’d be asking for Gene Hunt performance on a regular basis Blush
Can’t wait for the third series.
There was a series called Cresta Cabs on the beeb a long time ago, I was quite taken with PG in that too..

CurseryKinkajoo · 17/05/2020 22:29

Oh this is making me laugh! We have just started Ashes to Ashes after watching Life on Mars with the DDs (19 & 13). Dd1 is appalled that anyone can be lusting over the sleazy old man Grin

Mythica · 17/05/2020 22:41

I can't be the only one, surely, who couldn't fancy Gene Hunt in a fit?
I do like the shows though and he's undeniably funny.

Wish they'd ended Ashes after 2 series though. I thought the finale was ridiculous and unimaginative.
Hated it. Total let down after a brilliant run.
Oh well.

RuudGullitOnAShed · 22/05/2020 16:37

@SilverLiningSearching - that was Roger Roger - it's brilliant. I have it on DVD and am just about to rewatch the series.

PG is about 35 and rather lovely playing a feckless musician who works at Cresta Cabs.

Clancey · 22/05/2020 16:53

What was the attraction the white shoe? Grin.

I lost the will to live after a few episodes, although I stuck with it to watch Sam who absolutely mesmerized me. Although I don’t usually feel that way about John Simm.

queenMab99 · 22/05/2020 17:12

I am 69, widowed and thought I was not at all interested in men now, especially younger men, but I went to see Emma at the cinema before lockdown, and was rendered breathless by Johnny Flynn, as Mr Knightley, it is strange how these feelings sneak up on you unexpectedly, (and I can't stop listening to the detectorists theme tune now)

user1471442488 · 22/05/2020 17:36

I just watched From There to Here on Amazon Prime. The Guv sleeping with Annie. Seemed so wrong Grin
