Party popper gate!

I have had New year at my house for about 6 years, nothing massive just family and friends a few drinks and a bit of food.
We don't have a massive house 3 bed semi kitchen big so always end up in there.
Family member turns up two bags of party poppers they know i hate them as they make loads of mess and new years day clean up with a hangover is bad enough.
Anyway come 11.50 party poppers are handed out and i shout 'please let them off outside' but i'm totally ignored and people let about 4 off. I'm so bloody annoyed, and tell them all.
I say something along the lines of 'how disrespectful, i invite you into our home, no-one comes around help i only ask one thing and you can't do that' i think it was a bit more but i can't remember.

I was told i was being dramatic and spoiled I the atmosphere, and it all went a bit awkward.

Anyway as predicted no one came to help yesterday i was up at 7 cleaning and i'm absolutely shattered, but no one rung to check all ok as they usually do.

i actually feel guilty for spoiling the night, but think i was in my right to say something.

So was i being unreasonable to say something, or is it that my family really don't give a shit about me

As they say on here, your house, your rules.

misspiggy19 · 02/01/2020 10:56

YABU to tell them to let off party poppers outside

loutypips · 02/01/2020 10:56

Party poppers aren't difficult to clear up. If you felt that strongly you should've taken them off the person who brought them before they could be handed out.

AboardtheAxiom · 02/01/2020 10:57

YANBU perhaps the party popper buyer can host next year? I'd not be hosting again personally. I've been "the host" at one point in my life and its an eye opener when you stop. Unless you absolutely adore being the host I'd change roles and be the guest from now on.

thetemptationofchocolate · 02/01/2020 10:59

OP is not the party popper party pooper at all. Like a PP said, your house, your rules.

crustycrab · 02/01/2020 11:00

Let them off outside? Shock please don't do that.

Why were you up at 7 cleaning? Bit dramatic. It's unlikely that anyone is going to be up and offering you help at that time.

Rollonspringtime2020 · 02/01/2020 11:00

At least they are done with. Most family members bought dc more bloody Nerf guns. We deliberately didn't as sick of crying dc and cowering ddogs.
Spent yesterday filing them away... Now feel like The Grinch..

Dyrne · 02/01/2020 11:02

Surely party poppers are easier to clean up inside? Or are you saying you’d be happy to leave all the party popper crap outside?!?

YABVU to litter the outside with your crap. YANBU to not want party poppers, however I think YABU to have shouted and gotten shitty at people in the moment, rather than having a quiet word with your friend and asking them not to distribute them.

YABU to get shitty about having to clear up after a party - it’s a faff anyway that you have to accept when hosting, and the party poppers wouldn’t have added to the cleaning much.

SpudsAreLife84 · 02/01/2020 11:04

party poppers?! Confused are you always this dramatic?! They are hardly difficult to clear up!

Dyrne · 02/01/2020 11:05

And just read that you got buddy that people weren’t helping you clear up at 7am the day after NYE... wtf?!

I stayed round a friends house on NYE and happily helped clear up and tidy the next day... but at a much more sensible hour!

everythingthelighttouches · 02/01/2020 11:07

YABU

Yes, you’ve definitely soured the evening.

That being said, I think you are being taken for granted and have always hosted NYE. I’d suggest not hosting next year. Someone else’s turn.

I hope someone else steps up.

Grafittiqueen · 02/01/2020 11:07

YABU to think party poppers outside is a good idea. They'd be totally impossible to clear up. Also YABU to expect folk to be up cleaning at 7am on NY day.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 02/01/2020 11:07

Party poppers are so easy to clean up. They're just strings of paper.

I hope next year they bring poppers full of glitter.

You were very unreasonable. There was no need to throw a strop and you knew it would cause a shitty atmosphere.

I don't think you should host anymore if you're not happy to do a bit of cleaning up the next day.
If anything, though, they should have stuck around to clear up the worst of the mess before they left.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2020 11:08

I get why you don't like them but I think your response was overkill.

It reads like you were telling of a couple of toddlers.

Why did you get up and start cleaning at 7am? The mess would still have been there a couple of hours later.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2020 11:09

*off

enjoyingscience · 02/01/2020 11:11

How much mess can a party popper possibly make? You were a very bad host to shout at people then and there. You could have asked people to pick up the streamers though - it’s a two second job.

LagunaBubbles · 02/01/2020 11:12

Yabu. If you're not prepared to clean up don't have a party. It's only party poppers, it's not like you would be spending hours getting red wine and chewing gum out of a carpet! Yeh I get all this "your house, your rules" but you totally spoiled the atmosphere by the sounds of it. And getting up at 7am on NYD? You're mad. Don't have a NYE party next year.

needanewnamechange · 02/01/2020 11:12

How can 4 party poppers leave so much mess ? And up at 7am Shock I can bet they don't come next year .

Teaandcrisps · 02/01/2020 11:12

I think maybe if you dont like NYE mess to this extent then its time to give up the hosting.

Heismyopendoor · 02/01/2020 11:13

People normally come Ofer the next day to help you clean?

I don’t think hosting is for you.

Newjobnewstart · 02/01/2020 11:14

I wish i had got party poppers rather than the party cannon i stupidly bought. Flaming confetti everywhere. I will be cleaning it up for weeks. 🙈
I thonk your done hosting tho - sounds like you resent it rather than enjoy it.

bigchris · 02/01/2020 11:14

Jesus unclench woman Grin

This must be a wind up !

Stickybeaksid · 02/01/2020 11:15

Party poppers like the small things you let off at kids parties or some kind of giant confetti cannon?

MarthasGinYard · 02/01/2020 11:17

Do you expect your guests to clean your house after having them over?

Party poppers not a big deal sounds like you were on edge.

Celebrate somewhere else next year

Cohle · 02/01/2020 11:21

I understand your annoyance but I don't think you handled it very well. A quiet word with the guest who brought them would have done the job, rather than creating an awkward scene for all your guests.

I think you're being a bit of a martyr about the clean up. Of course no one is going to come and help you at 7am. Tidying up is part of hosting. If you hate it so much don't hold a party net year.
