Cards against humanity - angry friend

Last night we had a bit of a get together with v close friends and family. There were about 5 or 6 of us. I had been given Cards Against Humanity for Christmas and decided to play a game of it.

I explained the premise of the game to everyone and explained how it worked. I said some might find it offensive (and gave some harsh examples) but just wanted to make sure everyone was ok about it before we played as I knew some people might not like it. I explained if they were uncomfortable it was perfectly fine to say no. No one objected.

Everyone played the game.

Anyway - I called in to my friends house earlier to say hi and he had a go at me four times, complaining that the game was not ok. On four separate occasions I told him that I had given him the opportunity to opt out, along with everyone else, and if he didn't want to play that was fine. In the end I told him you have no right to complain after the fact, if you say nothing when we were playing it or before we started, as I am not a mind-reader and in such a small group you could easily have aired your concerns.

This person is normally quite vocal and no shrinking violet.

Was I being unreasonable?

Yes. Noone wantd to be the killjoy who says im not ok with it. That's oneof those games to give the opt out in private ahead of time not on the day.

His wife was there previously and I'd asked her if he would be okay with (he wasn't with her… so I couldn't ask him,) and the wife told me it would be fine, so I was also going by that

Notwithstanding the fact you’d given him ample warning about the nature of the game, surely it’s been around long enough for people to realise what it’s like and that the more outrageous the answer, the better.

It’s a shame something has upset him, but you gave him fair warning, and ultimately it’s a game so nothing you’d have said was meant maliciously (I hope!).

YANBU and Hazel who plans all their games in advance and then calls people about it ahead of time? What happened to spontaneity? We play Cards Against Humanity a lot and our only rule is that if you have a card that you don't want to use, you set it aside.

He needs to grow up. He had every chance to say no and he didn’t.

Presumably, he is a grown adult with a voice, and you didn't have a gun to his head? Tell him to grow the fuck up.

I rarely raise my voice, but I did today, as I felt he was being totally unfair.

YANBU - think he's went abit OTT telling you how much he didn't want to play 4 times.. the next day!

YANBU. Even if offended this reaction is OTT. Just say 'not for me'.

... surely it’s been around long enough for people to realise what it’s like and that the more outrageous the answer, the better.

I've no idea what this game is like, so wool have to go Google it now in case anyone ever wants to play unexpectedly.

Christ my 80 odd year old grandmother has played this game. She understands that it is just a silly game. Your friend is being very odd

He's being a nob. He may have felt uncomfortable with it but no gain in sharing this with you the next day.

Did he loose?

It’s an awful game, I hate it immensely. However, you gave him the option to opt out. He should have left the room and he shouldn’t be going on at you.
I always opt out of this game and leave the room if I can. I’m not a prude at all but this game is vile.

What a dick. It’s a game and if played with good friends having consumed plenty of 🍷 🍺 etc it is v funny.

Needs to toughen up, send some Frankie Boyle links and explain sense of humour is a personal thing but can be controversial.

If anyone had objected I would not have sent my mate out of the room. I would just have found a different game to play so that no one would have been left out.

I’m not a prude at all but this game is vile
This ^ my adult son (22) asked for this last year so I naively brought it not realising quite how bad it is.

I might have agreed to play not knowing what it was but then left. Not in any self righteous way but a this isn’t for me way. However I do think this is the game for people who think family guy is funny.

YANBU. I'm open minded and not easily offended but don't like CAH at all for various reasons. If people were playing it at a house party I would politely excuse myself rather thangoing along with it and having a go at the host after the fact.

He should have stopped during the game if he felt uncomfortable.

We play it a lot as a family (there are no children) as it used to be the easiest game for my uncle with dementia ....

I think he is totally over reacting.

(Oh and my uncle used to always win - his delivery of the “naughty” phrases with half an eye at my aunt who was usually mock-horrified ensured it)

How was he during it? Was he laughing along as if he was genuinely enjoying it or doing that uncomfortable laugh thing?

Love the game, but it’s not a game I’d play with my family as they’re very pc. You gave him enough warning, he could have left the room or not joined in 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don’t use the Madelyn McCann card, or anything related to children. I take those cards out.
