Cards against humanity - angry friend

CareBear50 · 01/01/2020 22:20

Last night we had a bit of a get together with v close friends and family. There were about 5 or 6 of us. I had been given Cards Against Humanity for Christmas and decided to play a game of it.

I explained the premise of the game to everyone and explained how it worked. I said some might find it offensive (and gave some harsh examples) but just wanted to make sure everyone was ok about it before we played as I knew some people might not like it. I explained if they were uncomfortable it was perfectly fine to say no. No one objected.

Everyone played the game.

Anyway - I called in to my friends house earlier to say hi and he had a go at me four times, complaining that the game was not ok. On four separate occasions I told him that I had given him the opportunity to opt out, along with everyone else, and if he didn't want to play that was fine. In the end I told him you have no right to complain after the fact, if you say nothing when we were playing it or before we started, as I am not a mind-reader and in such a small group you could easily have aired your concerns.

This person is normally quite vocal and no shrinking violet.

Was I being unreasonable?

How do you know that if you played this when you were a bit drunk that you could say something about cancer, abortion, rape or miscarriage in a selection of cards that could really upset someone.

Why would you want to play a game where you could accidentally do that?

I tend to know the people I play with very well, but a simple warning about the nature of the game is enough.

If someone isn't able to say that they no longer want to play then they need to learn how to do that. It isn't OP's fault her friend didn't speak up at the time. Maybe this will show him the importance of learning how to do so?

I grant my friends with some credit and assume they are adults capable of saying they don't want to play or leave the game if they don't like it.

You are suggesting infantalising adults and policing humour

What do you think I am suggesting?

Have I said it should be banned?

theflushedzebra · 02/01/2020 22:27

Perhaps a committee meeting and secret ballot before playing? Wink

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 02/01/2020 22:43

We had fun explaining 'bukkake' to my rather innocent SIL

I've played it with my nieces, nephews, brother and sister and their spouses, mother in law, partner and my dad. We all found it funny but my niece did refuse to explain to us what bukkake was......I think the card is pixelated village as well......

Thelastlittledragon · 02/01/2020 22:47

I don't want to goggle 'bukkake' can someone hint at what it is please! 😆

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 02/01/2020 22:58

Bukkake is when someone gets a face full of cum multiple times.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 23:57

The world is a better place when people in a group think of others as well as themselves.
So no party games with silly challenges because someone might not want to play but play anyway and then complain after.

And no drinking games because it's inconsiderate and it's unreasonable to expect adult attendees to make their own decision about participation.

In fact any social occasion should come with a prescribed set of topics for discussion, a pre prepare itinerary of games with trigger warnings and all attendees should ensure they have enough psychic powers to establish the thoughts of all other attendees just in case someone night not like a joke, topic of conversation or game.

This
Also I have a dry sarky/sometimes dark sense of humour myself but completely fail to see how anyone could find abuse etc funny.

Not even Monty Python or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Blackadder? The Young Ones?

theflushedzebra · 03/01/2020 00:40

Nighty Night? Friday Night Dinner?

theflushedzebra · 03/01/2020 00:45

League of Gentlemen? Psychoville? Inside No 9?

Are you serious? You do realise I meant "policing" in the metaphorical way and not legally??? You are obviously suggesting we shouldn't play the game, that'd what I'm disagreeing with

Brefugee · 03/01/2020 08:24

I can't find any of my own CAH photos but i had a quick look on Instagram. (#CardsAgainstHumanity if you want to look yourself) and some of them are really funny just looking at them, so i can imagine in a game you'd find them side-splitting.

eg:
black card: My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of __ .
white card: Obesity.

black card: Charades was ruined for me forever when my mom had to act out _ .
white card: masturbation

black card: It's a pity that kids these days are all getting involved with _ .
white card: having big dreams but no realistic way to achieve them.

black card: And the Academy Award for goes to ___.
white card 1: whining like a little bitch
white card 2: the entire internet.

What i found with a quick scroll was that these examples are in no way offensive. In fact they are witty.

Sure there are huge offensive joke possibilities here, but i think it's wrong to focus on that. There are some hilarious witticisms, and yes some sick stuff
(there's one about being in a plane and the captain says over the intercom "fasten your seatbelts ready to "... "bomb Nagasaki". That's sick and i don't think anyone in my family would pick it as a winner - although kudos that the first part and the second part actually match up which is really the aim of the game. There's another that says: _ will end racism. And the white card to that was: nothing. These cards would certainly start a discussion in my house.)

OpheIiaBaIIs · 03/01/2020 09:59

DD makes us a new set of CAH every Christmas. It's a blend of our own family in-jokes and a dash of very dark humour and it's hilarious. We've got a huge boxful now and whenever we play we hurt from laughing.

Your friend is being ridiculous, OP.

GADDay · 03/01/2020 10:05

We have played with three generations. We all laughed like drains.

I reckon your mate was a tiny BU.

MintyMabel · 03/01/2020 13:58

When really, we just have different opinions on humour.

Isn’t it actually different opinions on whether doing something you know might well offend someone in the room, is funny or not?

Did he lose? I bet it’s because he lost.
