Is beer a man's drink?

I don't think it is but I was buying some real ales for Xmas and the woman at the till asked if I was buying beer for my husband. When I said it was for me she was almost shocked that I wanted beer - 'Wouldn't you rather have a glass of wine?'

The beer I'm drinking while listening to R4 PM with DS2 says it is definitely a drink for this woman.

Love a nice real ale, had a lovely porter today. I don't like sweet drinks or anything too gassy so beer is usually a good choice.

We used to have this problem when going out. I drunk beer my now DH vodka and lemonade. 99% of the time I was given his drink and vice versa 🙄

Currently enjoying a Rev James Original and very nice it is too, supermarket woman would probably be mortified that it's straight from the bottle and not in a glass.

DS2 and DIL went out to a bar, ordered a pint and a large wine, the waitress brought it to the table and put the beer in front of him and wine in front of his wife. Silently DS swopped the glasses round..the waitress looked and stuttered an apology...

I used to order pints in the pub a few years ago about 30 years ago and the looks of horror were something else.

I can remember 40 years ago it was still regarded as a men's drink - at my aunt's Christmas meal the men were given beer, the women, sherry, and this was thought normal. Then when pubs did start serving it to women, they pulled silly stunts like only serving in a half pint glass.

I gained a certain kudos in my student days by being able to down a pint in one. Don't really like the stuff now, never drink it.

It sounds ridiculous but I would be embarrassed to stand in a bar or pub holding a pint...I know it makes no logical sense but I can't help it. I have zero judgement on women who do btw.

You have to be quite insecure to avoid a certain drink because you’re so worried only certain people can have it! Sounds exhausting.
