AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

Bread sauce is amazing! You do need to like cloves though.

supercee · 14/11/2019 17:44

I've never had it either.

speakout · 14/11/2019 17:45

Don't hold your breath.
A pile of gloop.

supercee · 14/11/2019 17:45

Or bread and butter pudding for that matter.

Ilovethekitties · 14/11/2019 17:45

I've never had it either. Sounds vom.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/11/2019 17:47

you need to do lots to the milk...steep in some sliced onions, cloves, nutmeg, plenty of S&P, then add the bread and heat it altogether very slowly until it's almost solid, then I let it down with double cream to a dropping consistency

Just warm it in the microwave on the day, and make sure you reserve some for dipping the pigs in blankets in
Also it's amazing in a sandwich, it helps to kep the sliced meat stuck together :o

senua · 14/11/2019 17:49

It sounds vom but it tastes divine.

SoftBlocks · 14/11/2019 17:49

I always thought it sounded horrible until I tried it aged about 30. Now we always have it at Christmas- it’s amazing.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 14/11/2019 17:50

Never tried it either.

Looks repulsive.

Northernsoullover · 14/11/2019 17:50

Its beautiful

BlueTongueSkink · 14/11/2019 17:52

I've never had it either but my friend always has a sandwich of bread sauce at Xmas. I know, it sounds very wrong.

DrCoconut · 14/11/2019 17:53

Why wait for Christmas? I have bread sauce with a roast dinner throughout the year.

Frownette · 14/11/2019 17:53

You're not BU (I met someone the other day who had never tried hot water with honey and lemon!) but I love it.

I don't do it with cloves, I just simmer milk with whole peppercorns, bay leaf and onion, then after that retain the milk only and stir in the bread

misspiggy19 · 14/11/2019 17:53

You are not missing anything. It is disgusting

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/11/2019 17:54

Oh, I love it, could eat it by the bucketful.

GloGirl · 14/11/2019 17:54

Never tried it either! Looks so revolting Halloween Envy

bumblingbovine49 · 14/11/2019 17:56

I love it. As does DH. We never make it though as he is vegetarian ( not vegan obviously) so I never think to make it except at Christmas

Herocomplex · 14/11/2019 17:56

Bread sauce with sausages and gravy. Delicious.

Leeds2 · 14/11/2019 17:59

I have never tried any, and no wish to do so! I am not usually "funny" with food, but that is one thing I don't want to try. My local bakers offers free bread pudding or a doughnut if you buy a sandwich and a hot drink - I have never had the bread pudding, and never will.

Adogwithabone · 14/11/2019 18:01

you need to do lots to the milk...steep in some sliced onions, cloves, nutmeg, plenty of S&P, then add the bread and heat it altogether very slowly until it's almost solid, then I let it down with double cream to a dropping consistency

That does make it sound quite tasty actually but a lot of effort to make!
Can you buy it in the shops? I've not seen it or seen it on a menu at a restaurant. But then again I've never been looking out for it.

Bread sauce is the BEST thing EVER!!! I can't believe you've never had it!!!! ??? It's been part of our Christmas my whole life!! [santa]🎄

DontCallMeShitley · 14/11/2019 18:02

It is revolting. Looks like a lump of thick puke and tastes pretty much the same.

ginghamstarfish · 14/11/2019 18:03

I tried it for the first time last year, it was as horrible as I'd always imagined.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/11/2019 18:04

It's fabulous! Never have chicken or pheasant without it! I have a very easy recipe - stud a shallot with cloves and put in half a saucepan of milk and bring to boil. Add breadcrumbs and seasoning and let it simmer for a bit until it thickens (not too much or it will be gloopy). Add cream for a special occasion.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/11/2019 18:06

Shop bought is not the same - much too oniony!
