AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

@bethankfulforwhatyouhave cut up smoked bacon (although I've tried with chorizo and was very nice. Left over gammon works too)
Fry until a little bit crispy. Finely diced garlic and shallots sweat in butter. Then the vac pack chestnuts. Bust up in your hands as you add them to the pan so some are whole and some are little nuggets. Add your Brussels that have been par boiled and shredded. Toss / sautee all together with mountains of butter, salt and pep. Omg I could eat it in its own with gravy. It just tastes like Christmas. We've started to add halved and while sprouts into the shredded ones so we didn't serve two different versions of sprouts.

They go sweet, almost caramelise in the butter. They don't have that cabbage taste. They're honestly amazing. I think Jamie Oviler does a good recipe for them. @TheHootiestOwl have you tried them like that?

Sounds horrible but tastes great. You need proper bread

lettersbyowl · 14/11/2019 19:42

It's absolutely the food of the gods Grin

saraclara · 14/11/2019 19:44

The only decent packet one is Schwartz. Don't even think of buying the Colmans one. It's awful - like wallpaper paste.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 19:44

Mmmmmm bread sauce, food of the gods. I can eat it by itself.

Roselilly36 · 14/11/2019 19:44

Doesn’t look great, but it tastes fantastic, I love bread sauce.

snowball28 · 14/11/2019 19:48

Looks repulsive tastes like heaven. Not Christmas without the dipping of left over pigs in blankets in bread sauce!

Roussette · 14/11/2019 19:51

You need proper bread

Totally agree. Don't even think about making breadcrumbs with sliced bread. I actually use a french loaf, let it go stale for a day and make my breadcrumbs for bread sauce from that.

NationMcKinley · 14/11/2019 19:52

Steamed sprouts dipped in bread sauce is literally the best thing about christmas.

DramaAlpaca · 14/11/2019 19:54

I'm Northern & have never tried bread sauce in all my advanced years. I've never fancied it at all, it looks revolting.

I adore sprouts though, I buy a few just for me as the rest of the family won't touch them.

Miltonj · 14/11/2019 20:13

Bread sauce is my actual favourite thing in the whole entire world. YABVU

PickAChew · 14/11/2019 20:14

YANBU. It's revolting.

lynzpynz · 14/11/2019 20:16

We use the packet stuff, add the powder to milk, heat, done 🤣! That and cranberry sauces are our condiments of choice at Christmas here!

EleanorReally · 14/11/2019 20:17

yabu
it is the bees knees, and so easy

EleanorReally · 14/11/2019 20:18

no way do you even need a packet mix!

EleanorReally · 14/11/2019 20:23

full fat milk, onion studded with cloves, over night.

PickAChew · 14/11/2019 20:23

I did have sprouts with my dinner, tonight. Halved, parboiled and sauteed in butter. Bloody lovely.

LoseLooseLucy · 14/11/2019 20:26

I've never tried it. The thought of wet bread makes me feel sick, I can't eat bread and butter pudding either 😷

LookAtWhatYouCouldHaveWon · 14/11/2019 20:29

Urgh. Gakking.

YANBU OP. I'd rather stick shitty pins in my eyes and set myself on fire whilst juggling scorpions than eat any kind of white/creamy sauce... and wet bread. No. Just no.

MorganKitten · 14/11/2019 20:30

I like it, just try it and see.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/11/2019 20:35

Does it just taste of bread? No. It tastes of clove and any other spices you put in it, with a background of onion. The bread is a thickening agent, like the flour that you use in gravy, although bread sauce is made thicker than gravy.

Nearest relative is probably the açordas you get in Portugal, basically soup thickened with bread, at the simplest flavoured simply with garlic, with some chopped coriander and a poached egg.

stoplickingthetelly · 14/11/2019 20:36

Never had it and it really just doesn’t appeal at all.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/11/2019 20:36

I did have sprouts with my dinner, tonight. Halved, parboiled and sauteed in butter. Bloody lovely. Try them with crumbled black pudding. (Black pudding tastes better steamed or put in a stew than it does fried)

flyingspaghettimonster · 14/11/2019 20:41

I make bread sauce for any roast meal whatsoever. I absolutely love it and it kakes leftover xmas dinner sandwiches amazing.

wineandsunshine · 14/11/2019 20:43

I've never had it either....it doesn't sound very appealing!
