AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

Yucky stuff, the consistency of wallpaper paste.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 14/11/2019 20:47

Never eaten it. Don't even know what it looks like.

My mum's bread sauce is legendary, she chops an onion & boils it in milk, then adds the shredded bread & mixes it until it thickens, adds salt & black pepper, puts it in the top oven to stay warm until the meat is ready. We have it all year round with roast chicken, pork or Turkey. My ds has just realised he loves it & disappears as soon as he has eaten his dinner in to the kitchen to finish all the leftover bread sauce.

Never wanted to try it, makes me feel nauseous looking at it

Piglet89 · 14/11/2019 20:51

It’s delicious. God I love it so much.

maras2 · 14/11/2019 20:54

Many moons ago DS (about 10 then) who'd loved his sister's MIL's bread sauce (bleurgh) was out for a carvery with us and the other side of the family.
At the end of the queue was a huge gravy jug filled with white stuff which he thought was bread sauce but NO it was a huge jug of horseradish sauce. He dug in with gusto only a child has when fronted with lovely bread sauce.
We still chuckle Smile
30 years on.

@MereDintofPandiculation Farmer's market, next week, so I might just try that if my favourite meat farmer is there!

zemblanity · 14/11/2019 21:01

Bread sauce is the best!

Murraygoldberg · 14/11/2019 21:06

I love bread sauce, Delia's recipe for Christmas. I don't mind the co-op packet one, quite clovey but Christmas calls for Delia.

FizzyIce · 14/11/2019 21:08

I’ve only ever had it on boiled bacon , it’s delicious!
Hate bread and butter pudding though

bestbefore · 14/11/2019 21:11

God it's delicious! I do the Delia one and buy a fresh farmhouse loaf a week or so before Christmas, let it dry out a bit, cut the crusts off and then blitz the white part of the loaf. I freeze the crumbs and use them from frozen when making it. You also need loads of proper butter in it and black pepper.
My family have been known to position themselves at the table by the bowl...😋😋😋

LucyFox · 14/11/2019 21:18

Bread sauce is delicious, but only if it’s homemade (or at a pinch the finest/luxury tubs from the chiller) - the packet mix tastes like wallpaper paste 🤮

theoriginalmadambee · 14/11/2019 21:19

I really don't get you Brits Grin.
To me that sounds vile, how much excess bread did you have in the olden days, since you have so many stale bread recipes?

Perhaps I will give it a go, is it allowed to blend it smooth?

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/11/2019 21:22

Those of you who add cream at the end, creme fraiche is a delicious alternative. Slightly lighter and adds a very slight sourness.

Christmas without bread sauce just wouldn't be right. It's always a sad day in that mysterious time between Christmas and New Year when the leftover bread sauce is finished up.

EleanorReally · 14/11/2019 21:30

agree, a sad day when the bread sauce is finished, that and the chestnut stuffing

lifecouldbeadream · 14/11/2019 21:38

Mmmmmmmmm

Bread sauce lovers.....

I have found my people...... Grin

Bouncebacker · 14/11/2019 21:40

It’s heaven! DH’s family don’t eat it, so when we go to their house for Christmas I make my own and take it with me!

bridgetreilly · 14/11/2019 21:41

No. But you make it with breadcrumbs. It's not lumpy.

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 14/11/2019 21:43

Love bread sauce but I'm the only one who will eat it so it goes to waste.

DippyAvocado · 14/11/2019 21:52

If we're talking controversial Christmas dinner opinions we always have white sauce with ours instead of gravy. Goes 210x better with turkey than gravy does.

You would probably like bread sauce then! It's pretty similar to white sauce but thicker and a better flavour because of infusing the milk.

Pannalash · 14/11/2019 21:54

YABVVU, its a thing of beauty.

Reallynowdear · 14/11/2019 21:56

Never tried it, not likely to either.

Handrag100 · 14/11/2019 22:00

It's delicious not not xmas without it. Think I've seen it in m&s but homemade is best!

LemonPrism · 14/11/2019 22:02

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow so it's a moist maker ey?

Adogwithabone · 14/11/2019 22:08

All these years I thought marmite was a real crowd splitter. Turns out it's Bread sauce.
