AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

All the people who say they hate bread sauce, can't stand the sight or smell or texture of it - how do you feel about white sauce, parsley sauce, cheese sauce, bechamel? It's essentially the same thing. Bread is made from flour, bread sauce is therefore flour, butter, milk, cream, flavourings. White sauce the same. It just ends up totally smooth, whereas bread sauce might be a touch lumpy.

I love it.

Majorcollywobble · 14/11/2019 22:20

Every year DH asks for bread sauce and also brandy butter . Eats one teaspoon of each and then it’s chucked . Birds love leftover bread sauce though .

Bluntness100 · 14/11/2019 22:21

I don't understand this one either, had it at a friends at Xmas a couple of years ago and they loved it, I was thinking " tasteless gloop".

JustAnotherPoster00 · 14/11/2019 22:22

and Delia's recipe is the best

My bread comes from a small bakers in tuscanny that only makes 2 loaves a year but if you cant get that normal sliced will do Hmm

she irritates the hell out of me Grin

Roussette · 14/11/2019 22:26

I don't think of it as lumpy, it's sort of textured! But that's why I don't like shop bought or packet because it's too smooth.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/11/2019 22:28

I use Delia's recipe too.
Years ago she had a recipe for stuffing which included chicken livers, I no longer h use her recipe but do my own take on it.
It's known in our house as Murderers stuffing, and is essential at Christmas.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/11/2019 22:30

Never had it either.

yolofish · 14/11/2019 22:31

Philistines! Bread sauce is ambrosia, the food of the gods etc.

MintyCedric · 14/11/2019 22:33

God I LOVE bread sauce - would cheerfully just have a bowl of crispy roasties smothered with bread sauce and gravy

ScrubbyDubby · 14/11/2019 22:48

YABU food of the gods

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/11/2019 23:00

Made well it is soft, fragrant and creamy. Absolutely delectable.

I don't think you can beat homemade, it isn't hard, you just need to do it ahead of time then reheat and slacken off with more cream when you're ready to serve.

MyNewBearTotoro · 14/11/2019 23:01

We always had it at Christmas as a child but I was very fussy and never tried it. It looks awful but my Dad loves the stuff.

LoseLooseLucy · 14/11/2019 23:08

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I like parsley sauce, cheese sauces etc... It's the knowledge that it's bread, and it's wet, and then I start envisioning bread that's been dropped in the sink that makes me absolutely gag when I have to scoop it out.. I'm probably a bit weird though...

Shodan · 14/11/2019 23:18

No no no to soggy bread recipes!

No bread sauce.

No summer pudding.

No bread and butter pudding.

And although not soggy, no bread pudding either.

Tbf I won't eat a sandwich where tomato has leached into the bread either. Soggy bread is an abomination.

LoseLooseLucy · 14/11/2019 23:20

Soggy bread is an abomination.

Exactly.

gavisconismyfriend · 14/11/2019 23:37

Bread sauce IS Christmas dinner! You can buy perfectly decent versions in the shops - great hot with turkey dinner, equally delicious cold in a sandwich with turkey and cranberry jelly. YABVVVVU if you don't try it and LOVE it! Smile

bluejayblue · 14/11/2019 23:39

A turkey sandwich is not a turkey sandwich without bread sauce and cranberry sauce! It's not Christmas without bread sauce, you bunch of heathens Grin.

KatherineJaneway · 15/11/2019 05:46

I've tried it but I was a bit meh, couldn't see the point of it. A sauce made out of bread, rather haveva slice or some proper sauce.

HeronLanyon · 15/11/2019 06:05

Love bread. Love sauces. Used to have hot bread in milk as child when sick.
Never had bread sauce or even been tempted to despite knowing it to be a thing all my life. Recipes here sound good.

Trouble is, in my mind, does it take the place of gravy ? Or the place of red currant jelly/cranberry sauce/mint sauces/onion marmelade/butter etc. Is it as well as those things ? Think I’ve just never seen how to accommodate it amongst all other tasty sauces going on.

Starlight456 · 15/11/2019 06:11

I haven’t had bread sauce in years . Going to buy some

shearwater · 15/11/2019 06:12

I didn't try it until I was well into adulthood, it never sounded great anyway. We always had onion sauce.

It was nicer than I thought, pretty good actually. I've made it to accompany Christmas dinner a couple of times. But now I think it was probably invented to fill people up when there was only a skinny duck for 8 people and there is so much food now that it's just another stodgy thing on the plate. Plus if the stuffing is breadcrumby, it doesn't seem well-balanced to have another bready thing.

smemorata · 15/11/2019 06:13

Love it - but only home made not out of a packet.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/11/2019 07:39

For those of you who are put off by 'soggy bread' associations, you can make it with breadcrumbs (fine ones if you want), and it really doesn't bear any resemblance to soggy bread.

If your 'barrier' is that it's a solid/stodgy/gloop, that just means it needs letting down a bit more (cream or creme fraiche will do that).

If you're in the 'tasteless' camp, then the milk hasn't had enough love. If you put an onion (doesn't need to be chopped, but pierced, either with cloves, or just a knife), a couple of bay leaves, some cloves and peppercorns into a pan of milk and hently heat up to boiling point and then turn off and leave it for a few hrs or overnight - you've got yourself all the flavour you need. Strain the milk, reheat and add breadcrumbs to thicken. Season with plenty of black pepper and salt, and BOOM, you have an epic sauce!

FizzyIce · 15/11/2019 08:03

Going to have to make this at Christmas, feel like I’ve been missing out .

LadyLanka · 15/11/2019 08:03

I hate turkey, but love bread sauce and am usually the bread sauce monitor if I am having Christmas lunch with family. You need to make it yourself, from scratch, and infusing the milk is compulsory. Cloves are optional, though!
If you want a halfway house or to test the flavours, you could infuse the milk and use it to make beard sauce-flavoured potato gratin, which is delicious!
