AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

No one should say it's revolting without trying it!

It is food of the gods. Make my own, takes no time and freezes brilliantly. (Have mine already made for this Christmas as I'm away before then)

How anyone can say it's a pile of puke I don't know! Maybe you've just had the packet stuff or something.

It's sooooo yummy. The teenage me once told my mum it wasn't a roast as it's not got bread sauce - she didn't forget since!! You can also get it in little blue packets like where the other small sauces are and yes it does taste just as good as home made and it's so much quicker and easier

Never enjoy a roast without it

bridgetreilly · 14/11/2019 18:08

I have come across very nasty bread sauce, so I understand why some people think it's horrid. But if you make it yourself - and Delia's recipe is the best - it is the food of the gods.

CherryPavlova · 14/11/2019 18:08

Proper bread sauce is the item that takes turkey or chicken to a much higher level. Supermarket sauce is tasteless gloop. Homemade is heavenly.

OldEvilOwl · 14/11/2019 18:08

Never tried it either, we never have it at Xmas in our house (or red cabbage)

SoftBlocks · 14/11/2019 18:09

I get a packet one or a ready made one, they’re fine.

Abouttoblow · 14/11/2019 18:12

My mum makes her own. It's the best thing about Christmas dinner for me. And Boxing Day too. By then it's solidified slightly so I spread it on my bread instead of mayo for my turkey sandwich. It's delish.

This.

TheHootiestOwl · 14/11/2019 18:14

Bread sauce is yummy. I hadn’t tried it until I was about 30!

Yabu about the sprouts though. They spoil Christmas dinner with their disgusting taste.

BillyAndTheSillies · 14/11/2019 18:16

Never had it. I'm really fussy about textures and the idea of bread sauce sets all my red flags tingling.

Fcukthisshit · 14/11/2019 18:17

It’s really nice! I used to have bread sauce sandwiches for my Sunday tea when I was little.

Kaykay06 · 14/11/2019 18:19

Urgh nope even the smell turns my stomach won’t ever make or buy it

mintcorneto · 14/11/2019 18:21

It's wonderful with pigs in blankets

Adogwithabone · 14/11/2019 18:21

I'm dNbu about the sprouts. If I made it for you, you'd be converted. This is a guarantee.

I'm going to make the Delia recipe this weekend and I'll report back.

Is bread sauce a regional thing?

It is lovely. I'd have it every Sunday if I could persuade DP, but he just about manages cooking a chicken, roasties, veg and a tub of Bisto.

Round Christmas, you can buy a small tub of it from supermarkets. It's nice, but obviously not as fantastic as made from scratch.

cantfindname · 14/11/2019 18:21

Properly home made bread sauce is amazing.

I saute a chopped onion in lots of butter, when it is clear I add milk, cloves and nutmeg. Count the cloves so you can remove them. Simmer for at least half an hour. Add white breadcrumbs and stir in, simmer five mins to let them soak up the liquid. Remove cloves and blitz the lot with a stick blender. Taste, taste and taste again and add salt and black pepper, then if there is any left take off the heat and put more butter on top and some cling film until ready to use. Bring up to heat, add some cream or just some more milk until it is as thick or thin as you like. Remember to keep tasting Grin

My daughter has been known to eat it on toast for breakfast the next day...

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/11/2019 18:22

It tastes good with brussels sprouts on Boxing Day as well.

MitziK · 14/11/2019 18:22

Loving sprouts makes you the sort of person that is likely to really appreciate the flavours, too.

DontCallMeShitley · 14/11/2019 18:25

Roussette, never had packet stuff, but have had bread sauce in plenty of places. It is always like a pile of puke. Was brought up with it, home made, restaurants, good ones, still foul stuff. You are welcome to it.

I love bread, but not bread made into slop.

Flymetothetoon · 14/11/2019 18:28

I've never tried bread sauce but now I'm intrigued to try it so will google the Delia recipe and maybe have a bash this Sunday

RevolutionofOurTime · 14/11/2019 18:30

YABU not to try it at least once- but that’s it really.

To non-Brits , bread sauce is the embodiment of everything that’s wrong with traditional British cooking: bad texture, bland taste, bad smell.

There are so many better gravies and sauces out there, it’s unfathomable that it’s still a thing.

MrsKoala · 14/11/2019 18:32

We tried it for the first time last Christmas (i'm 42), it was okaaaaay, a bit bland and creamy. My parents have never tasted it. DH never had it growing up and his parents never served it at Christmas either.

Tbh I don't really like a roast that much either and we don't usually have a traditional Christmas dinner (never did growing up) because everyone thinks it's boring/bland.

I don't get pigs in blankets either, we eat sausage and bacon most days/weeks, so what's special about that?

CareOfPunts · 14/11/2019 18:32

It is revolting. Looks like a lump of thick puke and tastes pretty much the same

This. It’s like chewed up and spat out bread. Absolutely disgusting

Roussette · 14/11/2019 18:33

DontCallMeShitley We're all different! We're a family of sprout lovers too Grin

I don't blitz mine, I don't like it smooth

Roussette · 14/11/2019 18:34

Maybe it is a family thing, my DPs and GPs loved it too, my (now adult) DCs love it and my DH.... well.... he is obsessed by it Grin
