AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

Never had it. Never want it.

Bloody love bread sauce Smile

TheMidasTouch · 15/11/2019 14:50

"So it's textural? How about mashed potato, cauliflower cheese, macaroni cheese, fish pie?"
Mashed potato is tasteless. Creamed potato is fine depending on what butter is used.
Cauliflower cheese - Cauliflower is pretty tasteless but can be okay depending on type of cheese used.
Macaroni cheese - yuk.
Fish pie - depends on type of fish in it. Smoked Haddock in it is yukky. Salmon, Cod and prawns can be good.

I must be a human dustbin too. There's nothing I don't like on this thread and love bread sauce. As far as texture I would say it's not lumpy like a lumpy cheese sauce or lumpy gravy, it's smooth with texture.

Shodan · 15/11/2019 15:04

Rice pudding is lovely.

Tapioca is vile.

Semolina is vile.

Mashed potato, fish pie, macaroni cheese, cauliflower cheese, all delicious, but they don't have the same texture as each other, let alone bread sauce. Or they shouldn't, at least Confused

It's partly a textural thing (see semolina and tapioca) but mostly the soggy bread thing.

MN must be the least adventurous place in existence where food’s concerned. Do you all allow your kids to reject food they’ve never tasted?

ilovetofu · 15/11/2019 15:10

Boak! 🤮
Why on earth would you?!

ilovetofu · 15/11/2019 15:11

@supercee Bread and butter pudding is very much NOT the same thing at all!

chemenger · 15/11/2019 15:13

I make bread sauce every year (very well, I’m told) and have never had even the slightest urge to taste it. I’ve never tasted bread and butter pudding either. They are just conceptually wrong to me. I eat almost anything else, oysters, offal, etc, I’ll try most things but bread sauce is never passing my lips.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2019 15:16

I absolutely love trying new foods.

chemenger · 15/11/2019 15:16

I have tried but can’t physically swallow porridge and grits (awful US corn based gloop), texture is the problem with those.

popcorndiva · 15/11/2019 15:21

Bread sauce is yummy. Always have it on Boxing day as well with the turkey sandwich

Herocomplex · 15/11/2019 16:15

That’s understandable @chemenger, I can’t deal with porridge, blancmange or jelly from the set gloop factor. But I love bread sauce. It’s kind of you to make it though, particularly if yours is delicious!

lancaster · 15/11/2019 16:18

The best bit of Christmas dinner (as a vegetarian). I use the Nigella recipe from feast.

Roussette · 15/11/2019 16:30

Boak! 🤮
Why on earth would you?!

My answer to that is .... why on earth wouldn't you?!

I never let my kids (now adult) say something was revolting or puke unless they had actually tried it.
They eat anything now Grin

Alsohuman · 15/11/2019 17:26

Same in this house @Rousette. Sprouts were apparently “yuck”. Now I can’t cook enough of them.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/11/2019 17:42

I love it, though I don't like cloves so I leave those out.

It's good cold with leftover turkey (and/or ham) too.

PonteLaCorona · 15/11/2019 17:43

Bread sauce (posset indeed!) and semolina and tapioca and ground rice are all fucking horrific.

Rice pudding is wonderful.

Whoever said mashed potato is tasteless is not making it right. You are allowed to season it.Grin

Bouledeneige · 15/11/2019 19:17

I love bread sauce. Just the once a year. It has a nice undertone of spice...

Bouledeneige · 15/11/2019 19:18

Love bread and butter pudding too.

RedSheep73 · 15/11/2019 19:19

Yanbu, it is disgusting. DH doesn't agree though and we have this argument every Christmas!

DuMondeB · 15/11/2019 19:21

Best part of Xmas dinner. And stuffing.

whatcolourthough · 15/11/2019 19:22

oh god it's like the highlight of any dinner. and quite possibly even more so on the cold cut sandwiches on boxing day. I cannot wait!!!

EleanorReally · 15/11/2019 19:31

Hey I might have some this weekend with the roast chicken

hoxtonbabe · 15/11/2019 19:33

Never tried it, just looks wrong, like bread soaked in water and mashed up.

Until about 3 years ago I had never had mint sauce ( im mid 40s) as it just seemed so wrong, but one day ( in a Toby cavery) I decided to try a bit, low and behold I can now get through half a jar in one sitting Blush

I’m going to see if I can get some from fortnums for Christmas, I bet that one must be so tasty.

Awww now I want rice pudding with shortbread, I’ve had the baking bug and this week I’ve made focaccia, chocolate shortbread, orange and pistachio shortbread and white bread rolls but this thread has made me want to make rice pudding.. I might even try my hand at raspberry jam to go with it
