AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

I've always wondered what bread sauce is. Thought it would be more appetising than that. Sound like something from the Great Depression.

If we're talking controversial Christmas dinner opinions we always have white sauce with ours instead of gravy. Goes 210x better with turkey than gravy does.

Didn’t try bread sauce until a couple of years ago ( I’m 55) as it sounded bleugh to me. Oh , wow! Now I always have it with roast poultry. I can’t be doing with making it, I just buy the packet sauce type. Make sure you leave it to rest for a few minutes .

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/11/2019 18:46

Roast potatoes smothered in bread sauce and gravy are pure heaven!

Chestnuts are not welcome on a Xmas dinner, as a but allergy sufferer this is a bit of a worrying new trend.

Spitsandspots · 14/11/2019 18:48

Not something I have ever been tempted to try and, no matter how many people on here say it’s delicious, still not tempted.

Some people think summer pudding is delicious but soggy bread with berries-nope.

Lordamighty · 14/11/2019 18:53

Bread sauce is an essential part of our Christmas dinner & there would be a family riot if it wasn’t served.

Katinski · 14/11/2019 18:55

so..bread sauce. Do you eat it hot, warm or cold? Thanks, I'll give it a go.

bethankfulforwhatyouhave · 14/11/2019 19:00

@adogwithabone the brussel sprouts sound amazing! How do you do it?

Roussette · 14/11/2019 19:00

Warm or hot!

although Boxing day, it is irrestible cold as leftovers

CherryPavlova · 14/11/2019 19:02

Hot. Don’t be tempted by shop bought.
Put some good quality white bread to stale for a couple of days. The. Remove crusts and rip to pieces.
Heat full fat milk with a quartered onion, bay leaves, grated nutmeg, star anise, mace, a cinnamon stick to two, some people use cloves but we don’t, lots of black pepper.
Allow to infuse for a couple of hours. Drain.
Put bread into flavoured milk. Allow to soak all liquid up. Swirl to a sauce. Stir in a few spoons of double cream. Add salt. Celery salt is particularly good.

I've heard of it but the thought of it makes me want to puke. Which is pretty much what it looks like to me.

Sweetpea55 · 14/11/2019 19:02

I was just thinking to myself that I had never tried it. It looks awful.. Does it just taste of bread?

whyamidoingthis · 14/11/2019 19:03

My mother used to make this every year for Christmas when I was growing up. I have still never tasted it. It looks and smells vile and I have no intention of ever tasting it.

StoatofDisarray · 14/11/2019 19:03

Sprouts, on the other hand, are the food of the gods even when they've just been steamed with no added bits and bobs.

TheHootiestOwl · 14/11/2019 19:06

I'm dNbu about the sprouts. If I made it for you, you'd be converted. This is a guarantee

‘Fraid not, still wouldn’t like them. Plenty have tried.

whyamidoingthis · 14/11/2019 19:06

No. I'm sorry but sprouts are not fit for human consumption. Although I think they might be like cucumber that only some people can taste and if you can actually taste them, they are vile.

ThePolishWombat · 14/11/2019 19:15

YANBU.
It’s fucking foul Confused
Even having it on the table (because my heathen of a BIL likes it and my mother has to please everyone at Christmas Hmm) turns my stomach - it’s like looking at a gravy boat filled with vomit Confused

bluebella4 · 14/11/2019 19:25

I'm with your friend... Bread sauce only tastes good on Christmas day!! It's a childhood favourite of mine and sisters. Now my kids love it 😀😀

Shock I'm sorry, what!? Get out. I will absolutely agree with you that a white sauce goes with turkey better than gravy but for Christmas day, you need to suck it up and drown your plate in gravy the way Jesus would have wanted you too!

I've never had it either. Sounds rancid.

Newbie1999 · 14/11/2019 19:36

Bread sauce with chicken or turkey is beautiful!

longearedbat · 14/11/2019 19:36

I adore bread sauce, and home made is much nicer than the packet stuff. I chop an onion roughly, add plenty of cloves and milk. Bring to the boil and let it infuse for an hour. Then I strain it, discarding the onion and cloves, and add white breadcrumbs - not too many at time as they expand as they absorb to milk. To finish I add a knob of butter and double cream (and seasoning). My oh hates it! Oh well, all the more for me. I think it's a very 'marmite' accompaniment.

Roussette · 14/11/2019 19:36

You don't know what you're missing

VerbenaGirl · 14/11/2019 19:36

I like bread sauce!

SexIsAProtectedCharacteristic · 14/11/2019 19:37

Is bread sauce a regional thing?

I think it might be. All my Northern friends are familiar with it, the Midlands and Southerners less so.

Katinski · 14/11/2019 19:38

the way Jesus would have wanted you to - now, that's got me giggling.ThanksGrin
Oh, and thanks for the bread sauce recipe.I'll give it go.
