AIBU to have never tried bread sauce?

A heated discussion with my friend on what makes a Christmas dinner better than a Sunday roast. To me, obviously it's the pigs in blankets followed by shredded Brussel spout (sauteed in bacon, chestnuts and lashings of butter).

She said. Oh no, It's the bread sauce. What? A sauce of bread!? Is it a thing!?

She said it's torn up bread all mushed together with milk... Sounds appealing...
AIBU to not even want to try it?

I've never seen it in 'real life! Only read about it!

ShatnersWig · 15/11/2019 08:07

Nope, another who has never had it and I'm 45. Have no intention of trying it either. Does not compute, a sauce made of bread.

Singlebutmarried · 15/11/2019 08:07

I really like it. But no one else does.

Lava bread now is a whole other thing.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 15/11/2019 08:36

Mmm - we always had bread sauce with roast poultry and game growing up. I used to dip any remaining roast potatoes into the leftover sauce after dinner and eat them like that! Delicious!!

Thurmanmurman · 15/11/2019 09:07

It's a bit meh really. Not disgusting but nothing to shout about. I have it once a year with Christmas dinner because it's traditional but I buy a tub rather than making it as it's not worth the extra effort.

PonteLaCorona · 15/11/2019 09:25

Yanbu. It's disgusting and vile.

Not many foods will make me physically retch but bread sauce has the two times I have tried it Envy

Mistlewoeandwhine · 15/11/2019 09:27

Oh God I adore bread sauce. Plus I like the fact that it’s a true medieval sauce so properly traditional.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 15/11/2019 09:28

I use Nigella’s recipe.

Do people who don't like bread sauce also loathe rice pudding? That's another starchy, creamy, lightly spiced, lumpy dish I love. Grin

ThePolishWombat · 15/11/2019 11:51

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Yep. Rice pudding can fuck all the way off aswell Confused
Another vomity, sludgey mess unfit for human consumption

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/11/2019 11:53

So it's textural? How about mashed potato, cauliflower cheese, macaroni cheese, fish pie?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/11/2019 11:54

I'll just say in passing that every time this topic comes up (at least once a year) people talk about how bread sauce looks like vomit. The penny has only just dropped for me that you're all talking about posset, not adult vomit. (Apologies to anyone eating.)

InOtterNews · 15/11/2019 11:56

Bread sauce is amazing! Christmas we make our own, but whenever we have standard roast bird we buy premade.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 15/11/2019 12:03

Yes - love rice pudding, semolina, mashed potato, fish pie - not macaroni cheese as I detest pasta! I have today bought a chicken to roast and am going to have chicken and bread sauce tomorrow for dinner (with roast potatoes, gravy and chipolatas!).

littlemeitslyn · 15/11/2019 12:03

You can't have chicken / turkey without bread sauce

billy1966 · 15/11/2019 12:08

Bread sauce made with well flavoured milk is incredible with turkey and game.

The milk has to be full of nutmeg, onions and clove. My grandmother had the milk soaking with its flavourings for at least 24 hours.

We would have it with goose. 😛

NanooCov · 15/11/2019 12:08

I had bread sauce for the first time when I went to Prague in my early twenties. With roast duck and red cabbage I seem to remember. And pirogi. Was fabulous. Think I might make it this year

AntiStuff · 15/11/2019 12:11

Tried it for the first time aged 42, as had always thought it sounded rank.

It's bloody lush.

LoseLooseLucy · 15/11/2019 12:47

I love rice pudding and semolina, so it's not the texture, just the wetted bread 😷

I'd probably like it if I tried it without knowing it was bread 🤔

ThePolishWombat · 15/11/2019 13:18

Nope nope nope Confused
I’ve talked about on here before on a “weird phobias” thread...
I guess it’s not exactly a phobia, more of a really strong food aversion - but any kind of creamy, white food makes me come over all peely wally Confused
With the exception of mashed potato, everything you listed makes me shudder. I actually asked to move tables once in a restaurant because the child on the table across the way ordered carbonara Blush

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/11/2019 13:26

Sounds tough, Wombat! I'm a human dustbin. There's almost nothing I can't/won't eat, and my waistline can confirm that.

Yes. It's vile too.

Me too. Except I also shudder at mashed potato

thecalmorchid · 15/11/2019 14:41

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow has it right. It's divine when made like this.

It elevates a simple roast to new heights.

TheMidasTouch · 15/11/2019 14:43

I've never tried it either. I can't say it looks in the slightest bit appealing to me.
