Baylis & Harding is shit isn't it?

It's all I see in the shops, beautifully packaged and expensive sets. However having sampled them I am always left underwhelmed.

The bottles look like they've been made as cheaply as possible. They buckle the moment you've opened them.
The fragrances are so minor as to be virtually unnoticeable.
Same with the creams and body lotions.
They always seem all style and no substance.

Or am I being unreasonable?

As an aside they are among the most donated unused items our charity gets for raffles. So they do have a use Grin

I love their hand wash, it’s one of the few that doesn’t give me dermatitis, never tried any of the gift sets though

FuckyNel · 05/11/2019 13:07

Oh now come on - I am quite prepared to flame Baylis but fr? No way!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 05/11/2019 13:08

Im not a fan of the stuff but cant understand the hype over molten brown...who the hell wants to smell of pepper...i will stick to dove.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 05/11/2019 13:08

I hate the stuff! Always end up getting it at Xmas and my DH secretly chuckles because he knows how much I hate it

dreichwinter · 05/11/2019 13:09

Baylis is cheap and nasty.
I once got my dsis some before I realized it was tat ☺️

LaurieMarlow · 05/11/2019 13:11

It’s interesting that FR has been brought in. I guess it’s the same idea, a fairly standard brand, playing with being ‘fancy’. In FR’s case, that’s very tongue in cheek.

I’m not sure why that provokes such ire though?

Sotoes · 05/11/2019 13:11

Cheap, unremarkable and pleasant hand wash. Non itchy, non drying, good value.

OMGshefoundmeout · 05/11/2019 13:12

I hate all boxed toiletries. They are such a waste of packaging.

Ferrero Rocher are also overpackaged but they are delicious so I turn a blind eye.

BouleBaker · 05/11/2019 13:13

I get the hand wash as the bottles look nice. It is very cheap but it washes hands ok.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2019 13:18

Joins grom and Nel in the Ferrero Rocher Fanzone. They're one of the few cheap mass market chocolates I genuinely do like, but no-one ever seems to buy me any, so I have to buy my own.

I don't understand the hate directed towards Bayliss & Harding in particular, they're just one amongst a sea of pointless gift products at this time of year and I don't see the point of most of them.

Take them out of the excess packaging and you have handwash, shower gel etc, I see no difference between stuff like that and washing up liquid, and no-one thinks that's a suitable Christmas Gift.

On the matter of it being a cheap copy of Molton Brown, it would be interesting to do a genuine blind test, a la Shop Well for Less. They could have MB, B&H, the Aldi version that also looks the same, but costs 99p and something similar from one of the other supermarkets, or maybe Boots, and see if people can Identify which one is the £££s fancy MB, which are the cheap own brand ones and also decide whether they really think it's worth paying £15 or whatever MB is these days for something that does the same job but might smell slightly nicer than something that costs a pound or two.

MrsEricBana · 05/11/2019 13:18

I like the BH handwash and FR. I am the worst.

MrsEricBana · 05/11/2019 13:18

(And a very cheap date)

LaurieMarlow · 05/11/2019 13:21

Hang your head in shame for your low, low tastes MrsEB Grin

PurpleTreeFrog · 05/11/2019 13:22

These anti B&H threads have been going since I first joined Mumsnet about 5 or 6 years ago...!

It's just soap. I don't think it calls for snobbery. It's just bog-standard soap in prettier packaging, if you like your bathroom to look nice the bottles do have a nicer design than other bog-standard hand soaps like Dove or Carex.

LittleTopic · 05/11/2019 13:22

@MyOtherProfile black pepper and ginseng? I like that one too Smile

CornishMaid1 · 05/11/2019 13:22

I've only used the handwash (I am picky about other products so hate boxed sets). The handwash is okay and smells fine. I only buy it when on offer and only then because DH likes the bottle as it is less likely to fall over than the cheap Radox/Carex handwashes.

DuckWillow · 05/11/2019 13:22

I think they are expensive for what they are and most of the price is being paid for the packaging.

I wouldn't pay Molton Brown prices either though as I am a cheapskate 😁

I mean £25 for a bubble bath Shock I pay around £1 for the Supermarket own brand masquerading as a brand.

I quite like their hand soaps.

fiftiesmum · 05/11/2019 13:23

DSIL gave me gift set last year which I put in the cupboard to regift back to her this year. DH thought he was being helpful by unpacking it and displaying the bottles in the shower.
Amazing they can ship cheap toiletries (mainly water) from China and still make a profit.

Lilyflower1 · 05/11/2019 13:24

I use the handwash in the downstairs cloakroom - in a Molton Brown bottle. Because I am that cheap.

MadeleineMaxwell · 05/11/2019 13:25

I hate all boxed toiletries. They are such a waste of packaging.

I'm with you, I get mine from Splosh these days.

Ponoka7 · 05/11/2019 13:28

I like the fragrance but not the feel of the products.

I don't like MB or l'occitane either though.

As a, pp said, FR are the only chocolate I'd eat out of the supermarket range. Except for Lidl's bubbly orange.

I used to get a lot of Sanctuary stuff, probably because of Boots 3-4-2 and that used to be nice. Luxury stuff is wasted on me though.
