Baylis & Harding is shit isn't it?

It's all I see in the shops, beautifully packaged and expensive sets. However having sampled them I am always left underwhelmed.

The bottles look like they've been made as cheaply as possible. They buckle the moment you've opened them.
The fragrances are so minor as to be virtually unnoticeable.
Same with the creams and body lotions.
They always seem all style and no substance.

Or am I being unreasonable?

As an aside they are among the most donated unused items our charity gets for raffles. So they do have a use Grin

I like it too! I don't use it but I would if someone bought it for me!

OtraCosaMariposa · 05/11/2019 13:38

Yes it's cheap rubbish. Waitrose own brand is a quarter of the price and loads nicer

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/11/2019 13:38

They aren’t expensive at all. That’s the point. You get the same scents as Molton Brown but for £3 for 1.5 liters (if you get the handwash). They are definitely value for money.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/11/2019 13:39

@Duckwillow Well what are you expecting for around £2 a bottle?

It's hardly up market and yes, they are aping Molton Brown.

I buy it for my kitchen handwash and it's fine.

I'd not buy it as a gift as everyone knows it's as cheap as chips and not special.

Butterflycookie · 05/11/2019 13:41

Their hand washes are good. But everything else is terrible.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2019 13:41

It goes without saying that this link comes with the obligatory apology for the Daily Mail link, but it was all I could find.

Molton Brown vs Aldi dupe

Don't laugh too hard at the twat in the wacky tracksuit.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/11/2019 13:43

I think they are expensive for what they are and most of the price is being paid for the packaging.

Really? They are around £2 for 300mls or more of handwash. Hardly expensive.

MelGrange · 05/11/2019 13:46

Makes my skin itch. Don’t like it.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 05/11/2019 13:47

I love their hand wash, it’s one of the few that doesn’t give me dermatitis

Same here

I'd not buy it as a gift as everyone knows it's as cheap as chips and not special.

And same here. The handwash at least is fine for what it is at the price.

It's just bloody handwash (or shower gel.) It's meant for everyday.

It's hardly worth starting a thread on.

I buy MB but at times think it's the emporer's new clothes! I'd never pay £20 for handwash, but the shower gels at 20% off are nice and last me almost 6 months.

raspberryk · 05/11/2019 13:50

Why is Ferrero Rocher being dragged into this?! They are lush! Halloween Envy

I don't know they just taste cheap and oily to me, I'll eat the odd white one. I just put them in the same category in my brain; thoughtless gift, cheap tat in "fancy packaging". You can't polish a turd I'm afraid Grin

Alsohuman · 05/11/2019 13:51

We’ve got the Gin and Tonic handwash in the downstairs loo and it’s awful, really thin and doesn’t smell of anything. The Aldi Jo Malone knock off is a million times better.

DuckWillow · 05/11/2019 13:58

Yeah I know it’s “hardy worth starting a thread on” but am sat in a hospital waiting room while hubby had some tests....and I am bored....and a bit anxious.

Yucky stuff.

DuckWillow · 05/11/2019 14:01

Yes...all clear . Phew!

Weird. I use both Baylis & Harding and Molton Brown and genuinely can't tell the difference between the two.
There is none. Or not much. The base ingredients of all these type of products are identical. Sodium Laureth sulfate, Sodium chloride, Isopropyl Miristate, glycerin, panthenol etc. More expensive products usually have the same base but with more expensive oils added (eg shea butter, avocado oil etc)
I like products that use a natural base (usually coconut oil) as far as possible but these often don't lather at all.
And I tell my whole family pls don't ever buy me toiletries! Such a lot of petrochemical waste.

Volvemos · 05/11/2019 14:04

I think of it as handwash for cafe loos, whose owners don’t like the look of a bottle of Carex or Tesco own brand perched on the sink.

As that, it is perfectly acceptable.

As it gift it says “I don’t even care enough to say ‘fuck you’”.

Time40 · 05/11/2019 14:05

Really hate getting these sets as a gift along with ferrero rocher, just don't bother

Bayliss and Harding is the Ferrero Rocher of the toiletries world.

I'd say the difference in production price between B&H and MB is very little. But with MB you have to cover their fancier marketing.

MB lathers. I can also still smell my shower gel on me when I get into bed. Admittedly that's probably a bad thing in terms of chemicals but at least it goes on, which is more than can be said about B&H

DontCallMeShitley · 05/11/2019 14:14

I have been given Bayliss & Harding by someone who thought it was a nice gift.

It was a bastard to get rid of because no-one wanted it. I feel sorry for the people who receive stuff from the food bank or win tombola prizes because that is where a lot of it ends up.

Legoandloldolls · 05/11/2019 14:17

With four kids it looks nice enough in the downstairs loo. I'm not posh enough to buy £20 a pop molton brown for it to be gone in week washing my toddlers LOL dolls.

Rainbunny · 05/11/2019 14:20

I use one of their handwashes because I like the particular fragrance and I also like that it isn't strong, I just get a nice momentary whiff of something pleasant. That said, I buy it from a supermarket and I view it as a supermarket brand, I wouldn't have dreamed of buying anything B&H as a gift for someone!
