I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

We may not have pontificated about it, but it really is bloody marvellous to know that, these days, there is a potential meal that I can eat if we go to a random pub for a meal.
For the first 30 years of not eating meat, it was literally pot luck.

FreeSpiritJen · 30/09/2019 20:52

YANBU at all.

Genuine vegans are fine, and you rarely hear from them.

But I will be glad when this whole 'veganism' obsession is over.

I give it 5 years and it will be in the past, and most people (who started it in the 2010s) will be vegetarians or meat eaters again.

It's very hard to keep it up for life.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/09/2019 20:52

I'm with you on the fake 'meat'. What's the point of that? Why eat something that masquerades as something you won't/don't want to eat?

Chips and ketchup, that's vegan too.

I eat very little meat but eat a lot of fish. Not good for the fish. I don't talk about it, nobody cares.

I actually don't like any lifestyle that's proclaimed as the only one that is correct. Do what you like, find your 'tribe' if that's important to you, but leave the rest of us alone.

FreeSpiritJen · 30/09/2019 20:53

All that said, it's good that there is so much more choice for non-meat eaters...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/09/2019 20:53

TheAlternativeTentacle, I absolutely agree that the widening menu choices is a positive thing. Everybody should be able to find something appealing on a menu that fits in with their lifestyle.

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 20:54

Why eat something that masquerades as something you won't/don't want to eat?

Because I like the taste and texture of meat but don’t want to eat animals.

VeganVeganVegan · 30/09/2019 20:54

I'm a lifelong vegan raising vegan kids and apart from on the rare occasions we have gone to a health food shop or vegan fayre, we have never met other vegans. My children don't even know any vegetarian children in school. We make our own seitan and I would never buy a cake when i make pretty good ones myself.
Today we all had lentil soup with baguettes a meal so many people eat who aren't vegan Smile.

thecatneuterer · 30/09/2019 20:54

If you don't like it then don't eat it. I'm thrilled that the choice now available means I can be vegan reasonably easily (as opposed to just being veggie which I was before). Better for my conscience, better for animals, better for the planet.

You're not being forced to eat it. Does seeing vegan choices on a menu really bother you that much?

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 30/09/2019 20:56

My biggest issue is the constant referral to the dairy industry as rape. I worked with actual rape victims for many years and find it incredibly offensive, consent is a human concept. Do you think the bull takes the cow on dates and gets to know her friends before trying it on?

thecatneuterer · 30/09/2019 20:58

I'm with you on the fake 'meat'. What's the point of that? Why eat something that masquerades as something you won't/don't want to eat?

Surely even a second's reflection would have given you the answer to this? Most people don't want to eat meat/dairy because they are concerned about animal welfare/the environment/their health, and not because they don't like the taste/texture. Therefore why wouldn't they want something that mimics the taste/texture but doesn't have the downsides?

june2007 · 30/09/2019 20:59

Jack fruit burgers, when the average brit doesn't even know what a jackfruit looks like.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 30/09/2019 20:59

YANBU - plant based burger patties WTF? Talk about processed shite. What are they actually made of?

DH and I eat loads of vegan/vegetarian food. Never eaten fake meat that I know of. We eat, ya know, vegetables Grin

CallarMorvern · 30/09/2019 21:01

I don't eat meat, but I hate the vegan fake meat industry that has sprung up. I don't want my option in a restaurant to be fake meat, meat grosses me out. I just want it to be something made with vegetables or a normal meal that just happens to be veggie/vegan. We were in Holland this Summer and even their McDonald's had no veggie burger, only fake chicken burgers. I feel my choices are getting less despite there being a so called vegan revolution.

FamilyOfAliens · 30/09/2019 21:01

All that said, it's good that there is so much more choice for non-meat eaters...

As a vegetarian (of 30 years), I’m actually finding there’s less choice in restaurants because they seem to think that providing a vegan option means they’re catering for vegetarians as well, the thinking being that “vegetarians can eat it”.

Technically everyone can eat the vegan option, but I haven’t noticed them removing the meat and fish options from the menu.

I didn’t go to our work Christmas do last year because the vegetarian option was vegan and gluten-free. Fuck that for £35.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 21:01

I went to grab my lunch last week - a place that does wraps. It’s now changed to two options - meat or vegan.

I (a veggie) was not happy. I want my cheese! I want my sour cream! I haggled with them to make a meatless meat version (more expensive than the vegan). Humph. So they have stopped making the (veggie) paneer version - even my meat loving colleagues bought that one!

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:01

"YANBU - plant based burger patties WTF? Talk about processed shite. What are they actually made of?"

er, vegetables?

Alyssum34456 · 30/09/2019 21:02

Meat eaters get so offended by this and don't really see why! Is it a guilt thing? Meat eaters are still in the majority worldwide so why be so sensitive? Most vegans I meet are really sweet people who keep it quiet as people take the p*.

Also you say "why do you they bother with fake meat?" Ok so have you given up all meat and lived on pure vegetables? If not, then why should you expect others to? These people are genuinely doing everything they can because to them it is the right thing to do. So it's all or nothing because it annoys you to see it on the menu? Confused

These alternatives have already helped a number of people transition and reduce their meat and dairy intake when otherwise they wouldnt. There is evidence that this needs to happen...
Also.. sorry but I don't think this trend isn't going anywhere. Every 100 years there is something where humans look back and go "maybe this is a terrible idea..." and humanity changes because we have a choice.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 30/09/2019 21:02

Yabu I don’t understand what’s so upsetting about what someone else eats for dinner Grin

MrsPear · 30/09/2019 21:03

What I can’t stand is the holier than thou attitude when the majority of vegans seem to not even eat real food but fake over processed crap factory food or food that has been shipped in from another continent which of course is wonderful as it doesn’t contain any animal products. Hmm

Whatsername7 · 30/09/2019 21:03

I am veggie and have been for most of my life. YADNBU! It is slightly annoying that all my veggie favourites have been replaced by vegan meals (which I obviously can eat, but it would be nice for the vegan meals to have been added to the menu without replacing veggie.) The worst thing is the same people who ribbed me mercilessly and waved bacon sandwiches in my face are now the virtuous vegans who tisk tisk at me for eating cheese. Fuck off!

Gindrinker43 · 30/09/2019 21:03

Its not peoples dietry chocies so much as the extreme views that some vegans seem to think is acceptable.
Stalking and intimidating farmers, storming pizza restuarants and terrifying diners becaue they have ham on a pizza, FFS!

CallarMorvern · 30/09/2019 21:03

Also the 'fake meat' is often highly processed and over salted, when all I want is a fresh healthy vegetable option.

ChocChocButtons · 30/09/2019 21:04

YANBU!! Couldn’t agree more :)

platptea · 30/09/2019 21:04

Having been a very non-pushy vegetarian since birth ( I don't care if you want to eat meat, I won't normally talk about it, I just don't want to eat meat). I can never understand when meat eaters go off about Meat Replacement products such as Quorn. I don't not like the taste of meat (never had it wouldn't know) but I don't want to eat animals so I get help with my protein with Soya or pea based replacement products. So I get to eat cottage pie etc just like you. I don't like the pushy vegans but I also don't like meat eaters telling me what I should or shouldn't eat.

Alyssum34456 · 30/09/2019 21:04

Also I'm NOT vegan but am more tempted to become one because of the fanatical (and often quite unhealthy) meat-eaters who have some kind of obsession with vegans.

Why oh why do you care? That I think is fascinating!
