I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

mightyminty does the motivation really matter if they are helping the planet and saving animals lives though?

croprotationinthe13thcentury · 30/09/2019 21:19

If ‘veganism’ ultimately leads to a situation where less animals end their life literally crapping themselves through fear as they queue up to wait and have a bolt gun shot at their head, I’m personally all for it.

EssentialHummus · 30/09/2019 21:20

Dunno. On the one hand, it likely appeals to people who wake up one day and decide to "go vegan" (for all sorts of reasons, that's a whole other thing). On the other hand it seems to sell the message that veganism is some expensive (read: exclusive) thing that requires you to buy Quorn and seitan and cheese made of cashews and £3.50 ready vegan meals.

I'm not a vegan or even vegetarian but I eat a lot of dhals and simple stir-fries - dinner tonight was pak choi with mushrooms. I think if people were a bit more confident cooking with different veggies and getting strong flavours from spices, herbs etc, that would do more to reduce overall meat consumption.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/09/2019 21:20

Why do you have to be a ‘fake vegan’ to eat vegan food? Very puzzled. I eat and enjoy vegan food. I’m a meat eater too (although less and less so)

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 21:20

Would love to completely give up meat and dairy.

What is it that’s stopping you?

GetRid · 30/09/2019 21:20

It's sad because they're not getting the essential animal proteins and animo acids that they need during development.

In Belgium the Royal Academy of Medicine said that veganism is only safe for children if it's accompanied with regular blood tests, lots of supplements and medical supervision. Most parents just aren't qualified to provide this.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 21:21

I tried jackfruit burger recently - a very enthusiastic waiter persuaded my friend to have it (I went for the veggie hotdog which he said was not good).

Jackfruit burger👎
veggie hotdog and chips 👍👍👍

soggypizza · 30/09/2019 21:21

I don't know why you care so much about what other people eat or are offered in restaurants...you are not quietly eating anything - you are going on about what other people are eating so why do you think you can spout off and vegans can't?
The more people that eat vegan the better for our planet - if you want to continue to eat meat you should be happy that other people are willing to forgo meat when you can't.

Lord we were so stunned we didn't have a quick comeback ready!

WhatTiggersDoBest · 30/09/2019 21:22

If you don't like vegan food, don't eat it. I'm failing to see why it upsets you? God it's like those straight people who get their knickers in a twist about gay marriage. Or those kids at school who were always trying to get other kids in trouble. I suppose some people never grow up.

Boireannachlaidir · 30/09/2019 21:22

Agree with PP a lot of people who have been caught up in this 'cult like culture' & jumped on the vegan bandwagon aren't especially well informed about animal rights, the food processing industry or even nutrition in some cases.

Bring back the old skool hunt saboteur/ALF vegans whose prime reason for being vegan was animal welfare and not because every other fucker (on social media) is vegan.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/09/2019 21:22

The new menus are awful. The choices for vegetarians have actually shrunk. The new choices are full of fake meat and
/or have no protein in them. Loathe slimy cold roast vege stacks. Bleah.

pollysproggle · 30/09/2019 21:23

I buy the fake meat and I think it's great although I'm a vegetarian not vegan.
I tried vegan but found it too hard to do alone as DH and kids are meat eaters.

I don't eat fake meat at every meal but sometimes you just want a burger or a sausage! For those occasions it's great.

mightyminty · 30/09/2019 21:23

windbeneathmybingowings no I agree it is a good thing, I just get annoyed with the dishonesty

beingchampion · 30/09/2019 21:23

Vegan is great, saving the planet by choosing to eat fruit, vegetables and grains that are transported the many, many miles by magic pixies instead of fuel-guzzling trucks and planes. So lucky to have such a wide range of foods to pick at, when much of the world is struggling to just eat whatever they can produce.

The 'militant' vegans that cause stress to both farm animals and other people should be bloody ashamed of their selfish little lives.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 21:23

Yes that’s right! The have just given veggies even less choice! I hadn’t really thought about it but has noticed it harder to find something nice to eat when out.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:24

This will probably go down badly, but honestly, raising your children vegan like a pp just mentioned is just so saddening. The poor poor children.

Official advice, eg NHS, is that veganism is fine for children two and above. Of course, you need a healthy vegan diet enduring you get all required nutrients. B12 aside, (simple supplements) there is no magic meat or dairy product which provides something which cannot be easily subsituted elsewhere. Poor diet in general is the problem. Whether someone is vegan, vegetarian or omnivore, tells one nothing about whether they eat well or not.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 30/09/2019 21:24

I agree that a lot of 'new' vegans aren't vegan for animals. It's for 'the planet' (which is slightly ironic as they tuck into food shipped in from all around the world - being a vegan who only eats very locally grown food would be well boring innit!) and because its trendy.

I don't think it will last either tbh, I think it's a phase.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/09/2019 21:25

I think dominant groups feel threatened when minority’s make progress. Privileged men complaining about women’s rights , rich people paying more tax to help the poor etc.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:25

The 'militant' vegans that cause stress to both farm animals and other people should be bloody ashamed of their selfish little lives.

Come on, that's just silly...

Catchytune · 30/09/2019 21:26

’m delighted with the greater vegan choices and raised awareness of the damage livestock farming does to the environment.
Because growing vegetables/plants on a mass scale doesn’t damage the environment or animals?
Wait until all your food is grown under plastic or made in factories.See how greateful the ( non exsistant) wildlife will be.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/09/2019 21:27

I’m not a vegan but I’m lactose intolerant, as is DH and DS1. The boost in vegan menus etc means we can eat out as a family and not worry about DS being in tears with stomach pains and diahorrea all night so you are being v unreasonable. Also every vegan meal helps the planet. And I say that as a meat eater.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 30/09/2019 21:27

I’m glad for the choices. I’m not a vegan and do eat meat occasionally. I prefer veggie stuff but hate dairy and hate anything too eggy so it’s a yay from me.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:28

YANBU I’m sick of hearing about it too. It’s all very ‘I’m better than you’ isn’t it. I hate the way vegans are so black and white about the subject as well. It’s very cult like.
