I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

Also, see: "vegans" in leather shoes

Since I’ve been vegan I haven’t bought any more leather. I’m not going to bin my old shoes. What would be the benefit in that? I’m replacing things as they wear out.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 21:47

@Potnoodledoo but not all vegans are like that. I've never attempted to shame anyone for their food choices. Activism doesn't work and I wish everyone realised that. Far better to share the vegan love by baking incredible cakes and sharing!

Unfortunately on the fringes of the vegan community there are fanatics but we're not all like that.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:48

WhimToo

They aren’t better than me, they just think they are better

Well of course they do - you're doing something they consider horribly morally wrong!

But you don't agree, so why does it bother you?

See its a cult! I don’t even eat meat myself but my god vegans are bloody annoying self righteous arseholes 😂.

carlywurly · 30/09/2019 21:48

I've seen vegan protests in our local Tesco many times. It does happen.

I agree it's harder to be veggie now. I like loads of vegan food but not meat replacement products. I went to a vegan restaurant with dp and literally everything on the menu was faux chicken or the like. We didn't stay as I'd have only managed a plate of chips Sad

RibenaMonsoon · 30/09/2019 21:48

I have yet to meet a vegan who has a clear picture of what the 'end game' is.
If there are any vegans that have any insights I genuinely want to be educated about them.

So we stop eating animal based products.... Then what?
What's going to happen to the farmers? They will go out of business. OK yes there's the fruit and vegetable produce but it's going to affect jobs in the agricultural industry in a big way.
More importantly... The animals. So we stop eating sheep, cows, etc. What happens to those animals then? Will the farmers be expected to keep them in food and board untill they die? Will they just be left to roam free? That won't work, they are used to being fed and dont know how to fend for themselves.
My dad always used to say, want to stop an animal from going extinct? Eat it. Now I'm sure these animals would rather anything than be bred for slaughter but what happens to them after we no longer use them for food? Are they in danger of going extinct now we no longer have a use for them? Is that better for the planet?
Genuine question. What's the end game? What's the plan for these animals after we no longer use them for food? I haven't had a vegan be able to answer that for me yet.

No problem with vegans myself. Except when they invade supermarkets, telling you not to buy things. I'll make my own dietery choices, you make yours.

soggypizza · 30/09/2019 21:48

@soggypizza it happened today. Some vegan warrior got a punch off a man in Pizza Express. So the vegan got assaulted?

Boireannachlaidir · 30/09/2019 21:48

Less than 1% of the population are vegans as well, you wouldn’t believe it looking at the proportion of vegan options on menus nowadays. It’s as if a higher proportion of vegan options makes the menu more current

@onemachine give it time as the corporate food industry juggernaut keeps trundling on, its in their interest to have more 'vegans', particularly ones that can't cook, don't know much about nutrition and who will plaster their glorious foodie images and pithy 'veganism' sayings & beliefs all over social media.

NarwhalsNarwhals · 30/09/2019 21:48

I couldn't care less what people eat but I have a colleague who will ask whats in peoples lunch and be all "Oh I couldn't eat that, I'm vegan you know" every fucking day, like she doesn't know by now that I do not share food anyway. Apparently its also ok for her to constantly tell me how skinny I would be if i went on a vegan diet but its really childish for me to keep telling her how much happier shed be if she just gave in and ate some cake, bloody double standards.

Far better to share the vegan love by baking incredible cakes and sharing! ...another line you hear often in the vegan cult!

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:50

WhimToo oh fair play 😂

crosser62 · 30/09/2019 21:50

Vegetarian for years, plant based for 2 years.
The look of horror on people’s faces when/if it comes up in conversation! It’s like I’ve stabbed a newborn unicorn to death in front of their eyes.

Meh I have my reasons, health mainly, control of my crazy out of control eating habits if I don’t follow it.
I feel good, healthy and in control, calm in fact following plant based.
I don’t go for meat substitutes as I don’t see the point.
Personal choice, doesn’t impact on anyone at all in any shape or form.
If it makes me a wanker ... meh.

Sowingbees · 30/09/2019 21:51

I fucking hate it. Lifelong vegetarian, and now every vegetarian thing is vegan and it tastes like shit

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 21:51

I went to a vegan restaurant with dp and literally everything on the menu was faux chicken or the like.

That’s pretty surprising. Most of the time, fully vegan/veggie restaurants don’t seem to use fake meat. It’s the omni restaurants round here that think they need to put a vegan option on round here that just have a quorn chicken burger with fake cheese.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:53

I wish vegans would stop saying omni people or omnivores. They don’t need stupid labels like vegans, they just eat food.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 21:53

So now we're not allowed to make cakes either? Righto Hmm

It's NOT a cult, it's a way of life I've chosen to adopt. I'm not out to convert anyone, I just want to get on with my life without the insults and stereotyping that I often encounter.

It seems to me that every single person who makes and anti-vegan 'joke' really thinks they're the first person ever to say it, and it does get tiresome after a while.

AryaStarkWolf · 30/09/2019 21:54

There's certainly alot of wankery in this thread anyway

Most vegans I meet are really sweet people

Not the one I had the misfortune to share an office with for a few months. She made her disgust very plain, she looked on all non-vegans with utter contempt, and was borderline aggressive about it.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:54

I fucking hate it. Lifelong vegetarian, and now every vegetarian thing is vegan and it tastes like shit preach! Vegan cakes are the saddest fucking thing I’ve ever eaten. They all taste like shit, and you have to nod along saying how nice it is to be polite 😂

AryaStarkWolf · 30/09/2019 21:55

@MyGhastIsFlabbered no apparently you're only allowed eats carrots or something

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2019 21:56

(Wonders how many meat eaters are actually closet wanna-be vegans who know they don't have the self control to not to be able to do it... grin )

I am. But there’s nothing “closet” about it. I openly admit that I lack the will power to permanently refrain from eating meat, much as I’d like to be able to.

Why on earth would I deny that?? Confused

I have no issues with people being vegan. Means more meat free options for me!

But a lot of these vegan options are just vile. There’s lots of nice things you can do with pulses and veg. But the vegan options are just rather pants
