I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

Blimey, it's 'Gary' all over again. I don't understand why some omnivores are getting so upset over what other people eat? I've never forced anyone to try vegan food or preached about veganism. Live and let live.

Boysey45 · 30/09/2019 21:28

I think a lot of vegetarians and vegans dont eat the fake meat/cheese anyway. I don't like a lot of it and have been mentally scarred from eating Sheese. I'll never forget the taste.
If you can cook, then your alright. If you cant then your stuffed and its quorn burgers/bites etc.

saltysally · 30/09/2019 21:29

That generic joke applies so well

How can you tell if someone is a vegan?
You won't need to. They'll tell you

I really don't care who is vegan but if for some unknown reason I wanted to know your diet I'd ask

dementedma · 30/09/2019 21:29

I’m an omnivore but trying to reduce meat intake and cook veggie meals often. Biggest challenge for me with fruit and veg is bloody food miles. Apples from New Zealand and South Africa when we have orchards in England? I think not! If we are playing ethical one upmanship who is better? Someone eating locally reared meat versus someone who is buying fruit and veg from half way round the world?

Fromage · 30/09/2019 21:29

I don't care who is vegan/pescatarian/lives on chocolate (me, chiefly)

BUT

what gets my goat tofu, is the adverts I keep seeing.

Buy this shampoo it's vegan!
New, Bleachio for the Loo, made with no animal products!
Vegan formula clay face masks on special offer!

Well fuck me. I had no idea my shampoo contained squeezed kittens. Or my bleach was made with the tears of a seal pup. Or my clay mask was actually made from baby blue whale blubber with a mere soupçon of mud.

Basically, labelling as vegan, things that never contained a dead animal in the first place. WTFingF.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:29

Because growing vegetables/plants on a mass scale doesn’t damage the environment or animals?
Everything takes a toll on something. But the question of degree is a real one, and of course farming takes an incomparably greater toll on the environment than growing vegetables. Are we still really having comments like this in 2019?

mightyminty · 30/09/2019 21:29

It is totally a trend and just wish that people were more honest about their motivations

JinglingHellsBells · 30/09/2019 21:30

YANBU

I think what annoys me is that vegans take on some moral superiority. Or try to.

Being a vegan goes against evolution. Man is an omnivore. There are increasing health reports about the risks of being vegan so it's not the healthy option some people assume. (and yes of course eating loads of red meat or processed meat is bad.)

I was a vegetarian for years. But I decided to eat some meat in moderation and only free range or wild meat. I eat red meat no more than once a week.

It's a modern luxury being able to choose not to eat meat. It requires vast amounts of cereal and veggie crops being grown with nitrates and pesticides which are environmentally damaging.

In the past, man would eat plants, berries, nuts and some wild meat and fish. That is how we evolved to survive as omnivores. I don't think we are meant to live as herbivores.

So many fake vegans now who eat vegan in public but not so in private.

And how on earth would you know what people do in private?

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:31

I hate the way vegans are so black and white about the subject as well. It’s very cult like.

I hate the way meat eaters are so black and white about the ...etcetc
I hate the way women are so ...
I hate the way Americans are so...

MrsBertBibby · 30/09/2019 21:32

Another grr at the shrinking vegetarian options. The bakery near my office doesn't do vegetarian any more. Just meaty or vegan. Wankers.

And it isn't the greatest diet. All that almond milk? Massive monoculture in California. Pollinated by honey bees shipped from all over the US, trading their diseases and stressed to buggery. There are no other pollinators to do the job, they can't survive in the monoculture.

JinglingHellsBells · 30/09/2019 21:32

Yes we are. 'Farming' includes growing crops. Are you meaning animals when you say 'farming'? It's not as black and white as you imply. It would be nigh impossible to feed the world on plants alone without using chemicals.

Lovesgood · 30/09/2019 21:32

YANBU It feels like there is constant vegan propaganda nowadays. And woe betide you if you dare point out that meat is actually healthy or how veganism hurts the enviornment. They dont want to hear facts. People get offended by facts and biology these days...

Hassled · 30/09/2019 21:32

Yes to the food being shipped in from all round the world - I really struggle to see how drinking almond milk flown in from California, where it causes groundwater depletion in an already drought-stricken area and where the use of pesticides is rife, is better for the planet than a pint of cow's milk from the dairy down the road.

On the plus side I do eat way less meat than I used to and make an active effort to do so, which has to be good.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:33

Sorry, but scientifically speaking, thats a load of manure.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:34

woe betide you, because you'd be speaking a load of made up facts.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/09/2019 21:34

The funny thing I’ve never known veggies/vegans to announce their principles at every opportunity. What I have experienced, as a veggie is being interrogated by meat eaters when I dare to order a non meat option from a menu. “How long have you been veggie?”, “don’t you miss meat?” Before announcing “I could never be veggie, I love meat too much”.

taytosandwich · 30/09/2019 21:34

'I’m not vegan either but I just can’t see who they are hurting and why people get so angry about someone else’s food. Just let them enjoy their dinner Grin'

Could they enjoy it without posting about it on social media though please Wink

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 21:34

It’s surprising what animal products appear in thins you wouldn’t expect. Lots of these new “vegan” shampoos etc really piss me off because they’re not cruelty free. I’m looking at you L’Oréal and Clairol who test on animals.

Cam77 · 30/09/2019 21:34

JinglingHellsBells
Rearing animals.

BringMeAGinandTonic · 30/09/2019 21:34

But I will be glad when this whole 'veganism' obsession is over.

People have been vegan for years, so it's not some trend. :/

JinglingHellsBells · 30/09/2019 21:35

okay so @Cam77 show me some real science /stats that show we can feed the whole of the UK 60m without using meat or fish or dairy. How many acres of land will need to be used or how many air miles importing food? You are putting yourself over here as an expert. I'm listening if you can prove it. Over to you for real evidence not just opinions.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 30/09/2019 21:36

See that doesn’t bother me either really taytosandwich. I suppose I just like looking at food in all its guises Grin

cakegoblin · 30/09/2019 21:36

If anyone is trying to have a vegan pregnancy please please please do your research - I heard this fascinating but terrifying programme about iodine on R4 (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09plrg0) that explains why babies born after vegan pregnancies have on average 5 points knocked off their IQ - among other potential issues - by iodine deficiency from not having any dairy during gestation.
I am not anti-vegan at all by the way, I just think that no-one should subject babies and children to extreme diets that are so completely out of touch with what we evolved to eat.
