I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

I think it's amazing there is so much choice now. I'll happily eat fake meat as well as home cooked vegan meals.
The oven never recovered from my exH cooking everything in lard. I'm so glad he's gone now. No more raw meat making the fridge intolerable.

Deadposhtory · 30/09/2019 21:37

Well said. I eat vegan five days a week but even my family haven't realized as I don't go on about it. Ie I'll have beans on toast or mushrooms

onemachine · 30/09/2019 21:38

Less than 1% of the population are vegans as well, you wouldn’t believe it looking at the proportion of vegan options on menus nowadays. It’s as if a higher proportion of vegan options makes the menu more current

madcatladyforever · 30/09/2019 21:38

Mind you I might be vegan but my cat isn't. She still gets good quality organic cat food.

soggypizza · 30/09/2019 21:39

how veganism hurts the enviornment Tell me how please?

Potnoodledoo · 30/09/2019 21:39

Blimey, it's 'Gary' all over again. I don't understand why some omnivores are getting so upset over what other people eat? I've never forced anyone to try vegan food or preached about veganism. Live and let live.

Tell that to the militant vegans storming supermarkets and restaurants.

Thats what has omnivores upset. We have a choice, same as you.I like my meat.I wouldnt go in to a vegan restaurant with a megaphone and abuse people.

So what right do the vegans have for doing just that.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 21:39

WhimToo They aren’t better than me, they just think they are better 😂 I’ve got a vegan friend and honestly she’s so nasty about people who choose to wear fur and eat meat. She says she nearly punched someone in the face for wearing leather shoes the other day! Vegans do feel superior, you can’t deny it! It’s a really horrible culture we have at the moment - no tolerance and shaming people, feeling bad about everyday choices. She bangs on about animal Agriculture ruining the planet yet she drives around I’m a big 4x4 😂

I do worry about babies/children being brought up with a vegan diet. No supplement is a good enough replacement for a well balanced diet. You only get a two year window to feed a baby properly and if you miss that window they will never reach their development milestones.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 30/09/2019 21:39

GhostofFrankGrimes No 1, I love the Simpson’s reference in your username. No 2, I really couldn’t be veggie Sad I’ve tried so hard and managed to get my meat consumption right down but I still eat chicken twice a week. So I would say that but not in a condescending way. But it an envious and admiring way!

Ginkypig · 30/09/2019 21:40

I don't care what other people eat or don't eat. I have no opinion on if someone wants to be vegan or vegetarian or cut out wheat or only eat raw food or well whatever, it's nothing to do with me! My only opinion is just like I don't preach to you about what or how I eat don't do it to me!

Iv been a non meat eater for about 15 years and have quite happily if sometimes boringly or with small choices just ate like everyone else but recently Iv been mightily pissed off that the recent popularity of veganism has meant that my perfectly fine and quite often varied vegetarian choices have been gotten rid of to be replaced by horrible meat substitutes or worse lazy choices to cover vegan/vegetarian/gluten free ++++ so a venue can say they cater to all dietary choices but in the one dish and not have to think any further than that.

I don't like meat, if I liked it I would order it so I don't want for the only thing on a menu that isn't a starter or a salad that I can have to be bloody pulled jackfruit or some other thing that is as close to meat without actually being meat!

Obviously not all restaurants do this but a lot have started. A lot of places that used to do some quite nice options have replaced them with just what Iv mentioned above.

It's gone from nothing except mushroom risotto on every menu to interesting options to meat substitute meals. Sad

All that being said Indian restaurants have always been not only reliable but great at having very tasty and interesting choices there are always a few options with at least one or two that cover your protein portion using lentils or chickpeas. I go home having had a great meal with a full belly without feeling like Iv had to choose the one thing that has been tacked on the the end of a menu!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 21:41

I was vegan when pregnant with DS1. He has been described as gifted by 2 head teachers, could read fluently aged 3, can discuss and understand quantum physics far beyond my comprehension aged 9, he chooses encyclopaedias as bedtime reading. He's truly scarily bright.

Boireannachlaidir · 30/09/2019 21:41

@thecatneuterer of course I can't know what people do in private & I will admit to clumsy wording to make the point that there appears to be a lot of hypocrisy around with some (not all) who obviously have jumped on the bandwagon. I just don't think some 'vegans' are as genuinely vegan as they'd care to admit.

I’m vegan, been that way for 4 years and was vegetarian for 30 years before that.

I’m not that keen on fake meats - too realistic in many cases.

A lot of vegan cheese isn't that great either.

I’ll not condemn anyone for eating meat - unless you have a go at me.

Each to their own. But I do feel healthier and have lost weight over the past 4 years.

I also try to avoid leather and other non edible animal products. No new leather shoes, plastic. Ike seat, fabric car seats etc.

For me it makes sense.

As others have said its nice to be able to go out for a meal and be able have something to eat. Food labelling laws have also improved things.

SwizzelStick · 30/09/2019 21:42

I'm nor vegan or even vegetarian and I am infinitely more pissed off by the number of insufferable idiots who constantly post and complain about how stupid they think veganism is and how dare restaurants and stores offer them so many options. The vegan haters do far more whining than any vegan I've encountered.

soggypizza · 30/09/2019 21:42

Tell that to the militant vegans storming supermarkets and restaurants. I have never seen this - where does this happen regularly?

AutumnRose1 · 30/09/2019 21:43

"Jack fruit burgers, when the average brit doesn't even know what a jackfruit looks like"

Must I have a degree in international food studies before I'm allowed a Danish pastry?

OP, I don't know. Many of my family have been vegan for a long way back and their ways of eating are being embraced here. I'm not vegan, but do eat fake meat and plastic cheese and many friends are horrified by it. I don't eat out much so don't know what's out there but I do think the people you'd consider "real" vegans are increasing in number. I don't have a view on any vegans btw except go ahead.

newnameagainagain · 30/09/2019 21:43

YABU
It means that for the first time my dairy allergic daughter has a meal and desert choice other than fruit or jelly.

taytosandwich · 30/09/2019 21:43

'I think dominant groups feel threatened when minority’s make progress'

It's less feeling threatened and more feeling irritated by some smug idiot who's been vegan all of 3 weeks preaching about how wonderful they are because they don't eat meat, whilst instagramming pictures of their planet ruining avocado on toast.

Fromage · 30/09/2019 21:43

Oh I get that animal products crop up in things you might not expect, but I agree, PurpleDaisies that there's a lot of hypocrisy between 'organic formula' and 'free of animal products' when the thing is tested on animals and made by children in a factory in the back of beyond, then shipped to where idiots will buy it. In a plastic bottle. But it's vegan, so yay!

Also, see: "vegans" in leather shoes; new vegans yes! buying fucking almond milk from California where there is a near-constant state of drought anyway, when you can also buy oat milk from the UK/Europe; vegans who don't like vegetables and only eat beige frozen food (I'm looking at you, former SIL, and your pale lethargic children); vegans who sweeten things with honey. Gah gah gah. Pick one and stick to it.

PS I geniunely don't care who's vegan, I don't eat much meat or fish myself, love a veggie anything - but it's the preachers and bandwagon jumpers who are annoying. I imagine they are irritating as all hell to people who've been actual vegans for years, and not felt the need to make a song and dance about it.

AutumnRose1 · 30/09/2019 21:44

"The vegan haters do far more whining than any vegan I've encountered."

Certainly seems that way to me.

soggypizza · 30/09/2019 21:44

I just don't think some 'vegans' are as genuinely vegan as they'd care to admit. When it comes to the environment - even if they are only vegan in public - they are still reducing their carbon footprint, so good for them!

Sallyseagull · 30/09/2019 21:45

YABU

I am not vegan but I have a few friends who are, they're not hurting anyone so leave them be.

For me, as the parent of a child who cannot have eggs or dairy I REALLY appreciate the increased vegan presence on menus.

bookwormsforever · 30/09/2019 21:46

I agree that it’s great to see more shops and restaurants providing vegetarian/vegan menu options, but i’m Another one who prefers to use fresh ingredients to cook.

I am not keen on Quorn or other processed food. Just because it’s veggie/vegan doesn’t mean it’s healthy! Same for veggie burgers and veggie meat replacements in general. Just why?

Potnoodledoo · 30/09/2019 21:46

@soggypizza it happened today. Some vegan warrior got a punch off a man in Pizza Express.

I dint mention it happens all the time either. But people have a choice, you dont have to agree with it.Respect goes both ways.

IAmALazyArse · 30/09/2019 21:46

Anyone can eat what they want to, but I look at a vegan acquaintance who eats the processed fake meat in basically every meal exactly the same way I would look at someone eating donner all the time.
Not healthy, too processed and certainly nothing I would aspire to. Even though that according to him I should. I read one of the vegan steaks ingredients. Nooo thank you. I do however like veggie dishes when done without this crap.
