I hold my knife like a pen. I did not even think about this until MN. Would you judge me for this if you met me?

I would yes sorry. I'd never say something but I would notice it so therefore I'd feel I was judging you just because I noticed.

I wouldn't, but I don't care hugely about etiquette. I would eat nearly everything with my hands if I could.

It's really a very inefficient way to use a knife as you only have one finger pressure to cut with. It would be considered bad manners in some circles. I was never allowed to do it as a child but the argument was efficiency. It isn't unusual. It would catch my eye only because my father disapproved of it. Also leaving the top off the toothpaste or squeezing it in the middle. Childhood message run deep

I'm not sure 'judge' is the right word, but it does look very odd to me when I see people eating like that.

My main thought is how do you use your knife efficiently, how to you manage to cut a piece of meat for example, because if you're holding your knife like a pen how are you able to exert any pressure on the blade.

It just looks very awkward.

I wouldn’t judge. But it would irk me if I had to sit at a table facing you and could see you doing that. Have you tried holding it the other way?

That said, seeing people not using a knife at all is even more irritating. Using just a fork in their right hand like a shovel, cutting things with the side of the fork...don’t get me started on that one.

Yes, I hate bad table manners and probably notice more since I have been trying to teach my own kids.

I would never say anything to you, that would be even more rude, so you wouldn't know.

I do know some people who have missed out on promotions because of bad table manners - it would have become embarrassing with some of the clients so it was easier to chose someone else. I also have many friends who won't invite you again. Some people really do care.

no i wouldn't judge you, since i m dyspraxic i don't hold a pen correctly so my way of using cutlery probably is considered wrong too.

@ManchesterBorn You have friends who wouldn't invite someone because of how they hold they knife? I guess these people wouldn't invite anyone from, say, the USA or Thailand or really most other countries. How strange.
