To ring RSPCA?

Downstairs neighbour but along one has had a small dog barking away in the garden since around 5pm.

I've never known them have a dog before, never seen it before and I've lived here a while, like I said it's been there since 5pm, no shade, can't see any food or water out there either and it's been crying/barking since 5pm. Its really sad to listen to. I would go and talk to the neighbours but they're known for being horrible, aggressive and violent men and I think are the local drug dealers ( lovely, I know).

AIBU to ring the RSPCA as it's been stuck out there for 5 hours or will they not be interested as DP suggests it could be a friend visiting and they don't want the dog in the house. Am I just being a worried animal lover or does this not seem to you either?

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2018 22:42

Doubt they will care. It's a one off?
Poor bloody dog though.

worriedupstairsneighbour · 06/07/2018 22:44

@Wolfiefan Yeah that's what DP said, it's not a regular thing as like I said I've never seen the dog before but hate the thought of it being locked out there all night and not sure what else to do

OP posts:
Wellthisunexpected · 06/07/2018 22:45

If it has water they won't care.

NancyDonahue · 06/07/2018 22:46

Poor thing. It does sound as though it's a visitors dog that is not wanted in the house. Hopefully they will go home soon and take the dog.

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2018 22:46

Maybe it isn't their dog. They could have visitors and the dog is being a PITA so they've shut it out?
Still. Poor dog. Mine is sleeping in her bed!!

worriedupstairsneighbour · 06/07/2018 22:47

@Wellthisunexpected there's no water bowl in the garden

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 06/07/2018 22:51

Unless you can see every inch of the garden you can't be sure it doesn't have water. Hope it does in this heat.

worriedupstairsneighbour · 06/07/2018 22:54

@Wolfiefan I can see the whole garden, it's only small and there's nothing in it, no plants or bushes it could be behind or anything it's literally a small box of just grass so definitely no water

TrudeauGirl · 06/07/2018 22:55

My dog is curled up next to me, i'd never leave her out like that. I think it's awful, i'd probably ring the RSPCA and hopefully they do something. Poor thing!

ChickenOrEgg6 · 06/07/2018 22:58

I would absolutely ring them, you have to at least try and hope they do something? I would, anyway.
I also think they do a bit more than check an animal has water? 7 years ago the rspca was called on us repeatedly (for revenge Hmm ) the first time the rspca came out they checked everything. Where the dog slept, how much we fed him, how he accessed water, if his sleeping area was clean and free of poo etc. they were a bit more lax after that because they knew he was ok and the neighbours just phoned repeatedly because we'd reported them for stealing our parcels... so I'd hope they wouldn't show up and say oh it has water it's fine!

worriedupstairsneighbour · 06/07/2018 23:12

@ChickenOrEgg6 that's the thing, I can't just leave it there overnight and not do anything!

Your neighbours sound awful

OP posts:
AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 06/07/2018 23:48

As it's new, and the neighbours are dodgy as hell, there's a reasonable chance this dog is stolen and going to be sold on.

Check websites like Dog Lost to see if it's been reported missing, and sites like Gumtree, Pets4Homes and Facebook to see if it's been listed for sale.

Scotstar · 07/07/2018 00:09

Please phone them. It's what they are there for. They can decide if they attend but at least you know you've done what you can

FatSally · 07/07/2018 00:17

I would leave it overnight and call in the morning.

It won't freeze or starve and will probably be more comfortable overnight than it was today with the heat.

FatSally · 07/07/2018 00:18

And you've got no chance of the rspca sending someone out at this time anyway.

viccat · 07/07/2018 00:25

You can try but in my experience they are sadly useless and will come up with every excuse not to come out... Still, there is certainly no harm in calling them and reporting it. You can do so anonymously as well.

littlecabbage · 07/07/2018 00:32

They are not useless. Just struggling to cope with high numbers of calls, and having to prioritise severely injured animals over cases like this. They are not "making excuses" whilst they sit in an office eating biscuits. The inspectors and other employees who work to collect injured animals/investigate complaints work extremely hard.

worriedupstairsneighbour · 07/07/2018 01:09

He's still out there, sleeping now though. I'll ring first thing.

OP posts:
garethsouthgatesmrs · 07/07/2018 01:29

definitely ring them. Can you somehow get some water through a gap in fence (I know it's a longshot) I am not a dog lover but still feel.a bit sad reading this.

worriedupstairsneighbour · 07/07/2018 07:46

The poor fucker is still out there and it is hot already. I'm upstairs so can't put anything through a fence but might try lowering something down

OP posts:
Urbanbeetler · 07/07/2018 07:50

Even pouring water onto the ground would give him some hydration?

CharBar39 · 07/07/2018 07:52

Call the rspca! What a joke that poor dog, I would ring them what's the worse that could happen?! X

worriedupstairsneighbour · 07/07/2018 07:58

It looks like someone's put a small Tupperware of water out in the garden but in a few hour or so the sun will be directly above the garden.

I was in an animal hospital last week with my cat and about 4 or 5 dogs came in on stretchers either collapsed or fitting and all of them died and they'd all been on walks that day in the sun, I can't let a dog just sit in the sunlight with no shade all day even if it has water.

If I post a picture is someone able to tell me the breed so I can look on gumtree etc

OP posts:
Urbanbeetler · 07/07/2018 08:05

I think you need to call RSPCA.
