Mocked by manager for way I walk

cannotbelievethistoday · 15/02/2018 17:07

My manager (think small store part of bigger company with lots of stores) was describing me as forthright in my speech. I was taking this onboard when he then proceeded to imitate how I am forthright and overphysical when I walk and over-acted me walking to the back office and flinging open the door in an over dramatic manner.

I have cerebral palsy. This is how I walk.

I burst out crying and ran out.

Mumsnet I need your wisdom. I think this is wrong and upsetting. Am I being unreasonable?

(Be gentle am still crying)

That's bullying definitely, and quite possibly disablist.

Do you have an hr department?

ShowerGel9 · 15/02/2018 17:10

Wrong. I'm sorry he's awful.

Honestly ignore him. Out of all the things he said and done. It could be worse. You could actually be him.

Anymajordude · 15/02/2018 17:10

What a twat. Do you have HR or someone you can talk to. That's surely isn't allowed.

TruJay · 15/02/2018 17:12

Oh bloody hell, that's not nice, sorry op.

Is your boss aware you have cp? Or just thinks you walk differently to how people should walk Hmm so thought he had the right to comment.

cannotbelievethistoday · 15/02/2018 17:12

Thanks both of you. You know when you are so shocked you doubt if you have a right to be upset, but you are still crying.

YADNBU, what a tosser.
Make a complaint to HR. That's not on.
Sorry op, what a horrible thing he did, Flowers

cannotbelievethistoday · 15/02/2018 17:12

Yes, he has made a joke about the computer being a “spastic” when it doesn’t work which I have asked him not to do.

That’s disabled hate speech and workplace bullying. Speak to HR. Please don’t ignore it, why should he be allowed to upset you.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 17:14

Have you a HR department?

Topseyt · 15/02/2018 17:14

He is an arse.

It is bullying behaviour. Is there anyone you can report him to?

buzbe · 15/02/2018 17:14

What an absolute arsehole. That does sound upsetting (especially if it's an already sensitive topic because of your cp) yanbu but he's a twat and not worth your years Flowers

buzbe · 15/02/2018 17:15

*tears

Cauliflowersqueeze · 15/02/2018 17:15

Does he know you have cerebral palsy? He sounds like a massive dick and I really hope he’s bricking it. I would make a complaint even if I didn’t have a disability.

Callamia · 15/02/2018 17:15

What the fuck? He needs to go and have a chat with HR. He’s a manager. That isn’t management or leadership in any way. It shows a lack of respect to you, and a complete lack of understanding about disability. I’m embarrassed for him, what a twat.

puddleduckmummy · 15/02/2018 17:15

Oh wow, what a nasty, spiteful thing to do. I would definitely make a complaint to his Manager and to HR or whatever the route is to take as that is completely unacceptable. It's easy to say don't let it upset you so I hope you have something nice planned for your evening to make you feel a bit more comforted xx

cannotbelievethistoday · 15/02/2018 17:16

I do have HR. I have called the area sales manager who is calling me tonight. I told him I didn’t know what to do but I wanted a steer from him which he said he will get. Problem is I have worked for them for less than 2 years.

zen1 · 15/02/2018 17:16

YANBU. He is bullying, and mocking your disability. You say the store is part of a larger company, so note everything down as it happened and then report it to HR / his manager. He sounds like an arsehole.

RagamuffinCat · 15/02/2018 17:17

That is completely unacceptable, and YANBU at all.

reddingtn · 15/02/2018 17:17

Did other people see? You need to talk to acas if you don't have an hr dept

Coco30 · 15/02/2018 17:18

Wow what a arshole! Was there anyone else there or just you and him?

Ginorchoc · 15/02/2018 17:18

Complain! It’s not on, any witnesses to these incidents, what an arse.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 15/02/2018 17:18

So what if you’ve worked for them for less than 2 years. You could have worked for them for less than 2 hours and had a perfectly reasonable grievance.

Jaxhog · 15/02/2018 17:18

Talk to him first and say how upsetting you found what he did. He may not know you have cerebral palsy, or may just lack social skills. If he doesn't apologize, promise not to do it again, or if he does it again - go straight to your HR department. You don't have to put up with this.
