Mocked by manager for way I walk

My manager (think small store part of bigger company with lots of stores) was describing me as forthright in my speech. I was taking this onboard when he then proceeded to imitate how I am forthright and overphysical when I walk and over-acted me walking to the back office and flinging open the door in an over dramatic manner.

I have cerebral palsy. This is how I walk.

I burst out crying and ran out.

Mumsnet I need your wisdom. I think this is wrong and upsetting. Am I being unreasonable?

(Be gentle am still crying)

Thanks everyone for their advice and support. It means so much, I will keep you updated.

Thisisshit - I have a lawyer who is helping, she has written my account of the events in legal speak so it reads coherently and well, without emotion. Fingers crossed the company will do the right thing. (But I doubt it. Sad)

Sorry to hear the meeting went so badly. He was an utter twunt and for not apologising correctly and accepting what he says was inappropriate you certainly are doing the right thing taking it further.

keep going with this the fact he sort of apoligised is a basic admission he did it. Your sales manager only has 2 options to deal with this you accept aploige or you take it formal there is no middle ground .Once formal then it can be dealt with .Now you have gone formal can be dealt with by company procedures might be worth look at these so you know what to expect keep going .

discrimination due to disability either psycially or mentally is always over looked and looked at as you are the issue I have had this problem with landlord it's actually sad

I'm delighted to say that this is absolutely NOT the case anywhere I have worked in the last 25 years or so. My current employer has an exemplary attitude towards disability and will not tolerate bullying.

This man sounds utterly vile and his manager completely useless.

I hope you have a friend or colleague who can support you through this process OP. I wonder if the Equalities Commission may be able to advise you? Imo this is a clear discrimination matter - the bullying is based on disability, which is a protected characteristic.

I was involved with a vexatious bullying case (these are vanishingly rare, and I'm not for a second suggesting that the OP is fabricating this). The person who made the accusation seemed untouchable once they'd (falsely, demonstrated by the reasonable adjustments in place which - quite rightly - went far beyond any legal minimum) accused the employer of disability discrimination.

This is exactly how it should be. Not all employers are dicks.

Good for you standing your guns. That's disgusting that he can get away with a non-apology along the lines of sorry you felt hurt. He can't get away with that. What message is that sending him? The company needs to back you up otherwise they're condoning his behaviour. Who in this day and age says the word spastic, especially a man of 29. To me it's a word that was frowned upon decades ago so it says a lot about him and his attitudes that he would even think to use it. Has anyone mentioned in these meetings it's disabilist? He should be sent on a course for this to amend his attitudes for sure. They need to be seen to be doing something. I hope the lawyer wrote in your account what his body language was. How is he even a manager?

Just got back from holiday and appalled to see your update; haven't these people got enough sense to see that it should have been dealt with very strongly and to understand what this could cost them? Shock It's because of exactly these sort of fools that employment law exists, and a darned good thing too

Delighted to read that you have, in fact, got a lawyer acting on your behalf, but given the manager's attitude I doubt they'll make things easy for you when this is over - and although that, too, would be very foolish of them, they don't seem to care
