Why can't Teacher training be done in summer holidays

Why do summer holidays need to be extended by 3 days to cover inset days when teachers have had 6 weeks off. And before I get shot down I realise they may have been in school over the holidays etc. But what is the point in going back to school on a Thursday

It is. The days were taken from teacher's holidays when they were introduced.

They are days that were taken originally from the (even longer) school holidays.

They get more leave just in just the summer holidays than most of the country gets for the year

TED days are taken from the Teachers holidays, the children's holidays/teaching days haven't changed at all.

It is done in the holidays. Now is still the holidays. Teachers have to go back early to do the inset days before the holidays end and the kids go back.

A short week is great for kids though - they get to ease back into school slowly!

As Wolfiefan says. Also, having Thursday/Friday in school at the start of the year can be really useful. I found I could do all the settling in stuff then when the children come in on Monday morning everything was in place to start work properly.

They are - the number of school days a child is entitled to has been consistent. Inset days were introduced as 5 extra working days for teachers

There is a set number of weeks for the school year. INSET days don't affect that. If they did them in the middle of the holidays they'd just break up earlier.

Not only teachers take part in Inset days. All school staff do. Teaching assistants, kitchen staff, receptionist, cleaners. They don't get paid for the holidays. Why should they have to come in during them?

What do you do during teacher training? I imagine you sat in a classroom, like children holding cups of coffee whist the HT points at things on the interactive whiteboard.

Once I would have spent time patiently explaining that teachers don't get paid for the holidays. These days I save my breath!

You could be like our area where teachers to 'twilights' instead and the summer holidays are extended by 6 school days.

It is the school holidays. Children's holidays don't get longer just because it's INSET!

No I don't attend training but then I then I get 24 days a year !! As opposed to teachers holiday.

If the council website says the term should start on Monday (today) then the inset days are in addition to the summer holiday but by virtue of them being taken at the end of the holiday this is an extension to it. My point is the children should go back on Monday and the inset days could have been done last week for instance

I love how everyone complains about teachers' holidays. Go be a teacher if you want them. I've never known a group of people more deserving of long holidays frankly.

Teachers don't get paid for the holidays. Their wages are done monthly but they get less each month to cover the summer.

The number of days your dc attend school are separate from the days spent on training.

And fwiw op , inset days can be and mostly are a bit of a drag. Long days spent with the entire staff team crammed into the dinner hall and having to sit on in seats intended for children. Days spent with a class of children are what it's all about , inset days are a necessary evil of the job.

It's mandatory training, to protect your children.

Today I did safeguarding updates, first aid epipen and asthma inhaler training, fire training etc.

All required by law. To keep your children safe.

Oh, and before it starts teacher's don't get paid for holidays. My contract is 195 days a year.

I'm very happy to lose 3/4 weeks a year but clearly this requires extra pay to all the teachers, which I'm sure everyone is happy to stump up in these affluent times note sarcasm

Look, I hear you, it's a piss easy job, great holidays. Come and join us. Get that PGCE and join the gravy train, kids. There's s massive teacher shortage, after all!
