Why can't Teacher training be done in summer holidays

daffodil10 · 04/09/2017 21:33

Why do summer holidays need to be extended by 3 days to cover inset days when teachers have had 6 weeks off. And before I get shot down I realise they may have been in school over the holidays etc. But what is the point in going back to school on a Thursday

YorkieDorkie RTFT yourself. I already apologised for my cross post Hmm

TarquinGyrfalcon · 04/09/2017 22:02

If the five days were lumped together in a week it would mean the staff teaching your children would only have the opportunity for professional development once a year in a very intensive block.

If there was an amazing trainer they would only be able to work in five schools (assuming all schools had the same week for training) - because schools can set the days they can arrange training for their school with the outside agencies/professionals that are right for their particular circumstances.

orlantina · 04/09/2017 22:02

if we (stupidly) upped the school day from 6.5 hrs to 8 hrs and term times from 39 weeks a year to 47 weeks a year so that a teacher's working hours reflected the hours of a full time office worker they would all need a 48% pay increase

If a teacher did have an 8 hr a day, 47 weeks + 5 weeks holiday - given the current workload and expectations, there is no way they could do that. I think there would be no hours in the day and the 5 week holiday plus weekends would be spent working and still they couldn't be an effective teacher.

Krapom · 04/09/2017 22:02

Look, I hear you, it's a piss easy job, great holidays. Come and join us. Get that PGCE and join the gravy train, kids. There's s massive teacher shortage, after all!

This!

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2017 22:03

provably the only thing that could convince ,e to teach would be the potential double payin August.id be an Awful teacher, you should be grateful I am not one

daffodil10 · 04/09/2017 22:03

Donttakeitforgranite

@Winebomb I am a little astounded at your ignorance. You work 50 hours per week... that's a great week for most teachers working in excess of 60 hours you lucky thing. As for your targets and monitoring, try being under the level of scrutiny in education on a daily basis. That's not even taking into account that it might just be your lucky year and Ofsted are due, or worse - LATE!
Ooh I do love September.

BlondeB83 · 04/09/2017 22:04

INSET days are training days and as such it's not always practical to have them all together. As others have said, they were already taken from teachers' holidays when they were introduced so yes, YABVU.

Minkyfluffster · 04/09/2017 22:04

It works really to get cheaper holidays though so I don't mind too much

SandunesAndRainclouds · 04/09/2017 22:05

September 4th and the teacher bashing starts already... great that the OP has now been educated but sadly it just reflects the thoughts of many others.

chocolateworshipper · 04/09/2017 22:05

Part of the reason for having flexibility in when the Inset days are is because sometimes lots of schools in the same area want the same person (a subject matter expert) to give training (often when a big change has taken place).

Another reason is to let the Head Teachers plan around what is best for their school and for the parents of the school. I know a HT who deliberately put several inset days at the end of the Summer term to give parents a chance to get cheaper Summer holidays. Obviously if all schools were doing that, holiday companies would catch on pretty quick.

YogiYoni · 04/09/2017 22:05

Those of you thinking teachers have it easy might be wanting this

ilovesooty · 04/09/2017 22:05

Well at least the OP now understands how the days came from teachers ' holidays in the first place.
Unfortunately not everyone will accept this so gracefully.
I'm astonished that in 30 years there are still people existing in ignorance and refusing to accept or understand how it works.

YorkieDorkie · 04/09/2017 22:06

@KittyVonCatsington keep your claws on, there is a delay on this thread. Lots of Xposts.

orlantina · 04/09/2017 22:06

It's funny how no one ever complains about INSET days when they enable people to end on a Friday rather than the next week.

But people always complain if the INSET day is on a Monday and Tuesday...

DontTakeItForGranite · 04/09/2017 22:06

OP, I apologise for the ambiguity in my post - the first paragraph was intended as a general statement. The second wasn't disagreeing with you.

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2017 22:06

inspire morse presumably they get some paid holiday on top of the 195

daffodil10 · 04/09/2017 22:06

Blonde see below I stand corrected I will get back in my box !

I slapped a girl I was teaching dancing to, 30 years ago. I made a man cry I was teaching English to 13 years ago.
Thank the Lord for normal teachers. Because.............

I'm coming to get your kids!!!!

No, I'm really not. That was a joke.

Winebomb · 04/09/2017 22:07

@kitty while I do appreciate that (mil is a head of a school In a low social economic area, that has a handful of working parents to a class)

I honestly wouldn't mind if I got at least 6 week holiday a year (statutory minimum is 28 days and that can include bank holidays so shy of 5 weeks, plus bank holidays. But teachers are only expected to work 190/1 days of a 365 day a year.

Whilst they are at work their job is heavy loaded, due to term times. how about if teachers got paid a little more and it was in there contract to only have statutory holiday allowance..

Surely that's reasonable?

CallMeDollFace · 04/09/2017 22:07

Love it! What a classic. Every single cliche in the book right here in one thread.

Why are people so unaware about teaching? I might ditch my pshe planning and do a careers topic on The Facts About Teaching.

We have to start somewhere, people! So much ignorance, it's ironic. We only have ourselves to blame...

Runningyogabooze · 04/09/2017 22:07

Totally agree

orlantina · 04/09/2017 22:07

I know one school that put them all into a long week just before summer half term - so that gave families a 2 week long holiday instead of a half term of a week.
