To buy a beauty advent calendar at £95-£150 ?

Hi guys ,

I've been wanting the Selfridges advent calendars(£95) since they started doing them but could never part with the money . This year, I'm seriously considering buying it or the Charlotte Tilbury one (£150). It will be out in October and usually sells out quick and then I'll need to get it on Amazon for extortionate prices - so, I need to decide pretty quick if I should put money aside for one of them.

Has anyone bought either previously? Are they worth the money? Would you aplurge and treat yourself for Christmas?

I've never bought one but sounds very tempting - what sort of things are in there?

You might get more considered responses in S&B but since this is AIBU YANBU provided you can afford it blah blah blah

Leviticus · 12/09/2016 09:59

I think if you've wanted one for a long time and you can afford one this year then go for it.

NameOfUser · 12/09/2016 10:02

Go for it and treat yourself Smile

Spice22 · 12/09/2016 10:13

Ooh i was hoping you would tell me to be sensible haha

whispering I almost posted there but felt it's a more biased area (as in , I'd get a variety of opinions from those who have used it here?)
Also, they will include makeup products - e.g Lancôme mascara , lipstick, moisturiser , perfume etc.

Has anyone tried them before ?

I don't agonise about these kinds of decisions for very long. If I want it and can afford it then I buy it :)
Yanbu.

I've never heard of these before but I have just looked on eBay and there is quite a few different makes on there brand new from last year but half the price. I might get dd (14) one :)

Thanks op!

I've bought the benefit one in the past, which was around the £60 mark. The year I bought it, it was sold through Debenhams or Benefit direct (website or stand alone shops). I gave it to my SIL and she absolutely loved it. There were 20 benefit goodies and 4 hairslides or similar.

Last year I bought the M&S one, and gave that to her, and she loved that too. Some of the products were full sized and the quality was really good.

I wouldn't buy the CT one for myself as I have way, way too much make up and products, but I think it can be a nice way to try out a range. I think its a really special treat, and YANBU to treat yourself at all. Enjoy!

I think it's a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of the son of God Grin

Would it be cheaper to go to Boots, buy 24 of the mini/travel items (perhaps get a load of free samples from the make-up counters too) and make your own calendar, using cereal boxes and some sticky back plastic?

mum2Bomg · 12/09/2016 10:23

Charlotte Tilbury makeup is the best I have ever had - bought my whole wedding makeup look and it's amazing stuff.

FeelingSmurfy · 12/09/2016 10:24

I think that's a good point about getting unbiased opinions

I would ask yourself
Can you afford it
Will you definitely use the products (or are you brand loyal)
Will you get excitement/joy from it

If the answer to all 3 is yes then go for it Smile I have treated myself to a stationery one for this year Xmas Smile

It would be cheaper but what would be the fun in that? No surprises as you know exactly what you are going to get and it wouldn't look 'pretty' Grin

Noseypoke · 12/09/2016 10:27

I have wanted the liberty one for ages, but couldn't quite justify the price as i wasn't sure I'd use everything.

I bought the M&S one as it was good value as a kind of trial run and bloody loved it, so I'm getting an expensive one this year.

AnnieNoMouse · 12/09/2016 10:29

But the fun would be in the making, and using the opportunity to put glitter everywhere, and getting to choose your items rather than paying for stuff you might not like Grin
You and a friend could do one for each other if you want to keep the element of surprise.

Planty18 · 12/09/2016 10:33

Thanks for this thread. I've never known about them before! Might have to ask for an early Christmas present Smile my friend treated herself to the Yankee candle one last year and the first day's brought on a severe asthma attack poor thing.

Crackerdog · 12/09/2016 10:46

If someone gavery me free samples in a cornflakes packet I would think they were sweet (or hideously mumsy depending on what they were like). If someone bought me the Charlotte T one they would be my best friend for the whole year. I am definitely going to get one for myself, I am probably the person closest to me anyway Grin

Proseccocino · 12/09/2016 10:50

The problem with the ebay ones from last year is that now all the creams and lotions etc have been sitting around for at least 12 months, you don't know if they have been in heat, or in sunlight etc....

MiddleClassProblem · 12/09/2016 10:50

If you can afford it, in the words of Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle, treat yo self!

MiddleClassProblem · 12/09/2016 10:51

(Ps I would totally get a gin one if I could)

MorrisZapp · 12/09/2016 10:53

Right. Where do we go to buy these things and when do they come out?

leccybill · 12/09/2016 10:53

Did I hear someone say there's a stationery one?

MiddleClassProblem · 12/09/2016 10:57

There's one for most things. They are amazing

splendide · 12/09/2016 10:58

I really need a link to a stationery one!

bloodynoris · 12/09/2016 10:58

If you go on Facebook and look for the group Mrs gloss and the goss, the ladies on there will tell you what the best one is. I think someone asked recently but can't remember what the best beauty one was.

Spice22 · 12/09/2016 11:04

So glad there's others as excited as me. Truth is ; I'm a student and money is 'tight' but there is room for it , if that makes sense (means I don't save for that month as I give myself £50 to spend and £50 to save) - but I'm thinking it's one month and it's Christmas !

I will definitely get joy from it.

Annie Id really like the Selfridges one but love that idea and have put it forward to my family - we are going to make each other -cheap- ones !

Planty hope your friend is ok. I bought the Yankee candle ones too as they were affordable. They are great value for money if anyone is considering them - they lasted me more than 6 months !

Morris you can get it on the Selfridges website. It's out in October - think CT is already out.

Nosey please report back if you do get the Liberty one - I'll live vicariously through you.

Think I'm gonna get it !
