I live just down the road from one of my closer friends. She doesn't drive and we live about 3 miles from our city centre (about a 10 min drive because of traffic).

This evening I was finishing work when I got a text from her asking if I would give her and her friend a lift into town 'to save money on us paying for a cab.'

I have a 50 mile commute and happened to be coming out of a meeting in a city 70 miles away when I got the text. Needless to say I didn't reply as I just wanted to get home.

I've just received another sarcastic message telling me not to worry as she decided to fork out for the taxi in the end 'but thanks for the response'.

AIBU to think this was bloody cheeky in the first place and to therefore not have been so arsed about responding?!

I think the words 'fuck off' are appropriate here.

Both her texts were unacceptably rude and I'd be telling her so - to her face.

Just to clarify; I wasn't driving when I looked at the text. I was in my car about to leave the car park.

Could she not walk? Do you owe her a massive favour or by any chance did you previously say you'd give her a lift? If not, she's an arse

Do you have read receipts? If not, I'd be replying 'I was 70 miles away, and working, when you texted. I've only just seen it now. You owe me an apology.'

I wouldn't even mention whether you'd have given her a lift or not if you were closer. She's completely unreasonable, especially to assume you'll instantly respond!

I'd have sent her a text straight away saying I couldn't do it. Simplest all round.

Text back 'when your message arrived I had just started driving home from [birmingham] and it would have been illegal for me to read or respond to your message whilst driving.' - it is fair enough to give her an explanation.

Whether you add to that 'your sarky sense of entitlement evident in your messages has shown me a new side to what i had previously considered a friendship' or alternatively 'I would totally have been happy to help if I had been around, just ask a bit further in advance next time' should depend on how much of a giver or taker she is generally.

Totally taking the piss to ask in the first place. Lifts are for OH/ partners and elderly parents, not mates who cba to get a cab.

To add to that, she's taking the piss massively and you do need to address that.

Maybe she'll be less keen to ask next time! Huge cheek!

What massively annoys me is that people think that you should be available to be contacted 24/7. I keep my mobile switched off, because it's not possible to take calls during working hours, and only check at lunchtime and after work. It just seems a massive piss-taking that you should respond to texts or calls immediately. And she has over-stepped the bounds of friendship.

I'd go round and see her tomorrow to express my feelings. 5am might be a convenient time.
