Subway - Halal issue

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

I think that the issue here, if we can get last the bigoted view points, is that meat needs to be labelled properly.

There is no legal definition of halal in the uk.

When meat is labelled as halal, the person selling it (at every point in the chain) needs to sure it is halal, whatever that may mean.

Meat that doesn't carry a halal label could be either halal or not.

Baptised Sikhs aren't supposed to eat ritually slaughtered meat, which poses a problem in the uk (see above) for Sikhs wishing to eat meat.

This isn't about the rights and wrongs of halal food, it's about customers being informed so that they can make a choice.

It's only in areas with a high Muslim population. It makes perfect business sense to give customers what they want.

There are so many Subways around, that I don't think those wanting ham etc will have too go far to get their fix.

I have looked on their website and am glad to see that all of the many branches near to me still serve pork.

On the rare occasions I go in there, I like a slice of nice pink ham, not the turkey ham that the halal ones use as a substitute.

This is really a non story.

I love subs too Blush but not a meat eater so I always have the veggie ones. I think our local branch is halal; doesn't seem to have harmed their trade!

Cantbelieve Lovely article only 98%of meat both Halal and non halal is killed in exactly the same way.

Stun

Slit

Hang

Making it halal includes sticking a cd on the tannoy.

Subway will buy from the big processes so that meat will be pre stunned. So I'll ask again what you object to?

If it's non stun halal then avoid Asian shops who buy from the very few purely halal butchers that might do non stun and you will be fine.

Fwiw I think we should go the New Zealand route whereby all meat is stunned. But until we do the reality of being up in arms because the DM says those pesky Muslims are sneaking halal meat into your telco burgers is rubbish as it will be stunned anyway!

Doittoojulia

The problem you face there is going to be massive wastage, it's not practical.

Kosher in particular will only eat a few bits of the cow, so if people label the meat as Kosher slaughtered and other avoid it through the wrong assumption it is a cruel way to kill (when it will have most likely been killed in exactly the same way) then you basically have to chuck in the bin 3/4 of a cow! Terrible plan in a world where resources are precious and climate change is an issue.

So you object to animals being killed, or animals being killed while listening to a CD?

We have 6 stores near us. 1 is halal and it is in the predominantly Muslim area. This reminds me of the whole outrage over halal meat being sold in M&S and tesco etc which took place a few years ago, and where it transpired that it had been happening for years as it was cost effective, and was not a result of 'Muslim customers demanding it' as was first suggested.

Personally I have never had a subway and don't intend to. The places stink !

Depends on the CD spare. I'd have some some sympathy if the last thing they were subjected to was Justin Beiber.

Sisters
The CD is of an Iman playing the required script from the Koran
This is a lot cheaper than having an actual Iman in the slaughterhouse saying them, which is probably what they actually meant when writing the Koran, but this has been adopted as a nice way to be able to charge the 'halal premium' while keeping costs to a bare minimum

Nah, bored. Fancy a Subway now Grin
