Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 17:11

we aren't a non Muslim country - hth

LoonvanBoon · 30/04/2014 17:12

I do too, Joysmum, & so I only buy humanely reared meat. Which I can't afford all the time, so we eat lots of veggie stuff.

But it doesn't make sense to say you won't buy halal meat because you believe (probably erroneously from what I've heard about slaughterhouses) that those animals have suffered marginally more in the very last minutes of their lives, if you don't give a shit about the fact that every other minute of their lives has been hideous. I don't see how that that helps the animals or the cause of animal welfare even the tiniest bit.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 30/04/2014 17:12

Jinsei not wanting pork is not a need. They can easily chose to not have it. But instead, they've prevented those who do want it from having it

I wouldn't dream of taking a good away from others because I didn't want/couldn't have it.

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 17:12

I would be interested to know the percentage of Muslims residing in the UK.

Why? What does it matter? The UK is a multicultural country, always has been. We don't have an indigenous population.

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 17:13

If you don't like the way halal is slaughtered you might want to stop eating meat altogether.

Only the majority of halal meat is stunned then throat slit and hung to bleed.

non halal meat is stunned then throat slit and hung to bleed.

NONE of the major abbatoirs I know do non stun halal. The 2% ishof meat in the UK that are not stunned before throat cutting are purely halal abbatoir servicing Asian butcher's not the subways of this world.

Oh and chickens are they actually stunned at all anyway? ? I only do red meat in my job so not sure.

Finally I asked DH my Muslim husband (I'm Christian) and he asked the "community" and he says they couldn't give a shit. not actually true but he would if I could be bothered its subways commercial decision not a muslim pressure group FFS.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 17:14

OMG has pork been banned from the entire UK now ... no thought now Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 30/04/2014 17:15

In that case they should offer also non halal options!

littleducks · 30/04/2014 17:16

Tequila they did just that. Subway didnt have halal only eating muslim customers. They decided they wanted some and their cash so created halal stores.

It is proper non news, it has been the case for years, the daily mail is stirring.

Subway say it has been in place since 2007:

www.subway.co.uk/menu/halal.aspx

I have known of halal branches for at least 5 years so that version rings true compared to the daily mail version

FatalCabbage · 30/04/2014 17:16

I'm not sure I've seen any restaurant declare itself properly free-range. So much of the price of restaurant food is not food (eg staff, fuel, rates, rent) that it wouldn't be much more expensive.

::ponders::

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/04/2014 17:16

I see the bigot klaxon sounded on this thread.

MexicanSpringtime · 30/04/2014 17:17

It's amazing the number of people that think that halal and kosher slaughter is worse than the normal method.

Unfortunately halal meat is seldom produced according to the rules in the koran, where the animal is supposed to be led to a quiet place and talked to softly then killed quickly with the sharpest possible blade.

In the modern context, the slaugherhouse, every type of slaughter is unbelievably cruel

sparechange · 30/04/2014 17:17

Tequila, it is perfectly legal to eat dog meat in the UK
But no restaurant or sandwich shop would sell it because their customers wouldn't want to eat in a restaurant which had dog meat in the fridge

For muslims, the idea of eating pork is just as abhorrent as the thought of eating dog would be to most brits and they don't like buying from places that have pork in the fridge.

Of course there are a few people out there who would eat dog. Should all restaurants stock it just to cater to them? Or should a restaurant or sandwich shop be able to make a commercial decision to sell what gets them the most customers?

Aeroflotgirl · 30/04/2014 17:18

My veggie friend eats at restaurants serving meat, obviously ordered the veggie option

DinoSnores · 30/04/2014 17:19

"Jinsei not wanting pork is not a need. They can easily chose to not have it. But instead, they've prevented those who do want it from having it"

Just had a look at my local area. There are 7 subways in my small city, 1 of which is halal (on the same street as one that isn't). Not a Subway customer but not being prevented from eating pork here!

Jinsei · 30/04/2014 17:20

Ok, they're catering to Muslim wants not needs. So what? It's still a business decision.

The "Muslim community" (whatever that means!) isn't imposing its views on anyone. This is about businesses trying to maximise profit.

There is a nice vegan restaurant in Nottingham. Do people find that equally offensive?

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 17:20

bloody Vegans banning meat from the UK

Ruushii · 30/04/2014 17:22

BUSINESS MAKES CHANGES TO INCREASE PROFIT SHOCKER!!!

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 17:23

IMO The world would be a much better place without sodding religion.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 17:24

is there a UKIP message board somewhere that keeps sending people over?

squoosh · 30/04/2014 17:24

Those pesky vegans, invading our country, making us eat their baba ghanoush.

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 17:25

Fanjo so people object to halal meat and suddenly they are bigots. Profound. Hmm

Abra1d · 30/04/2014 17:25

Why would you want to go to Subway anyway?

TequilaMockingbirdy · 30/04/2014 17:25

Jinsei I am sure you're intelligent enough to realise the difference between a vegan place, and the Subway chain which has never marketed itself as aiming towards anyone except the 'general public'. Now it would seem that they would rather aim themselves at the Muslim population rather than the general public as a whole. Not the best business decision IMO.

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 17:26

Why would you want to go to Subway anyway?

Errr, hazarding a guess because you want a sub?

TequilaMockingbirdy · 30/04/2014 17:27

Anyway this won't happen in the Wigan one so I have no worries... Wink
