Subway - Halal issue

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

you can't be openly gay in many Christian countries either :)

The Muslim community aren't making this decision - Subway are - for economic reasons

How are the Muslim community forcing Subway to be halal.? Or is it Shock a Western capitalist decision based on supply and demand. I hate Subway, it stinks and isn't really food on my book. If they can get the Muslim community to eat that muck, more power to them.

BTW all the people who object so vehemently to halal meat, I assume you were writing letters, marching, eating vegetarian the moment you heard about what happens in non-halal abattoirs? Were you?

The daily fail article on this was and is very misleading, designed to be inflammatory.

It is capiatilism at work!

FWIW McDonalds trialled a halal branch (southall) it didnt catch on so they have no halal UK stores, others fast food chains have had more sucess in the halal market. It really is down to market forces.

I used to like a ham and cheese sub. I sometimes got others but will not go back now as I didn't know it was halal and I do not agree with how they are slaughtered.

How can your concerns about the welfare of pigs only extend to how they're slaughtered? Intensively reared pigs - & I bet that's what they use at Subway- lead a completely miserable & unnatural life from the minute they're born.

Can't understand people expressing moral objections to halal & kosher meat, despite happily eating intensively farmed pork / ham / chicken etc. It's so inconsistent.

Nandos serve Halal chicken in some of their outlets, ALL chicken at dominos is halal. This really isn't a new thing.
Some muslims are more comfortable buying food from places where there is no pork used at all, so there is no chance of accidental contamination.
Subway has made the commercial decision to take pork out of some stores in the hope that Muslim customers will now come flocking and buy more of their disgusting 'food'. They aren't being ideological. They just want to sell more of their shit sandwiches.

I don't know if it is still the case, but a friend used to work for an abattoir that produced Halal chicken. It was the exact same production line as the non-halal chicken, expect it had a taped recording of the Iman saying the required words playing over a tannoy.
So I wouldn't get too worried about the quality of mass produced catering-quality halal chicken. It is just as shit as the stuff that isn't halal.

I'm assuming none of you have ever been to leicester. every fast food restaurant sells halal, well maybe not every one but the majority for sure.

I can't say it bothers me though. There are still more than enough places that will sell you pork and non halal meats.

So halal meat is secretly in most foods?

Why is a non Muslim country catering so fiercly for Muslims?

Some shops and restaurants don't serve any meat at all.

Do you get equally incensed about the 'vegetarian community' imposing their views on the rest of us?

Ummm, because they are businesses that want to make money Hmm

I shop to fit in with my beliefs.

A good life and a good death is what I demand for animals reared and killed in my name.

Tbh Loonvanboon I don't buy into this concept that just because anyone isn't 100% perfect in the eyes of another that they shouldn't be able to support their own more limited moral choices. Every little helps.

I would be interested to know the percentage of Muslims residing in the UK.

I have not known of any stores removing meat so not to offend Vegetarians

Shops and restaurants in an area with a high Muslim population are choosing to cater for their local customer-base. Nobody is imposing anything on anyone.

If I had a fast food shop in a predominantly Muslim area, and the local potential customers were saying "We're not likely to shop at your store for religious reasons" I would also rethink my business model.

Jinsei · 30/04/2014 17:09

Oh ffs, subway aren't doing this out of some sort of misplaced political correctness! It's a business, all businesses respond to their customer needs, it's the only way they can survive!

You sound a bit ignorant tbh OP. And like you're trying to make some sort of point out of nothing. Hmm

They didn't remove meat to stop offending muslims, they changed the meat they sold in an attempt to get more (muslim) customers!

Report
AMumInScotland · 30/04/2014 17:11

But it's not 'so as not to offend' the Muslims. It's so that they will feel morally able to shop there. Same as the vegetarians choosing to go and spend their money in restaurants that do not serve any meat.

A group of customers exist. They have preferences. There are shops that choose to cater for those preferences. This is not a case of anyone 'imposing their views' on the rest of the country.

Why is a non Muslim country catering so fiercly for Muslims?

Because installing a tannoy on their production line means they suddenly have a product which they can charge more money for, for little extra outlay.
And take away joints can tap into a new market without having to pay for 2 lots of storage and food production facilities to separate them

The Halal process is far from ideal, but factory farmed meat is no better. If you eat crap and cheap food, you have to be aware that the way they keep the price down is producing it in the cheapest way possible, and that means compromising animal welfare.

Calling cheap meat halal doesn't stop it being cheap meat, but cheap meat that isn't halal isn't suddenly better and healthier
