Subway - Halal issue

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

Sisters will totally out myself but one lovely abattoir story I heard the CD had broken and the bloke they'd asked to come in to do the prayers had gone on a break so the English slaughter man was merrily cutting away singing "whatever Ahmed not real name said whatever Ahmed said" Grin

Brilliant.

The fact remains unless you are actively bothered about if a prayer is playing in the general vicinity or not then pretty much all beasties meet their maker in the same way.

spare I'm a vegetarian. I have spent some time researching the UK meat industry including halal. Obviously my opinion is based on my own personal journey from meat eater to vegetarian.

Sarinka what? Why? What a load of bollocks

New Zealand is one of the only countries that doesn't allow non stun slaughter at all, so all your meat 100% killed in exactly the same way. One lot will have the cd on tannoy, 1 won't thats it

Pretty weird thing to be ashamed of Confused

lmao softly

Personally meat is meat to me. I take more issue in how it was kept for the x amount of months/years of its life than I do in how it spent the last ten minutes.

You've never had a Subway? Buzzard the meatballs are to die for, just don't wear white whilst eating Blush

I've nothing to add save I've never been in a Subway. The combination of the green, yellow and white corporate colours is weirdly downmarket and off-putting.

If you are a vegetarian, why do you give a crap if Subway have removed ham and bacon? Seems like the only reason is prejudice...

Wastage may be an issue, but I still think clear, compulsory labelling is desirable.

Also, New Zealand do only export halal meat. Whether or not it's slaughtered in the same mechanical way (Tayyab playing or not is realistically the only difference) it's labelled as halal and therefore is halal.

Proper labelling means that those who wish to only consume Halal or Kosher can and those that wish to avoid it can. Those that are indifferent get to eat anything anywhere.

The issue of animal rights/moral preference then would be a debate that people could have whilst being safe in the knowledge that whatever their stance they can eat how they like.

There doesn't seem to be any halal ones near me.

Which is just as well, as the way they kill the animals for it is barbaric.

Still, as long as I can have my salami and sweet onion I'm happy...

Sarinka what are you going on about? Please explain.

The only "humane" way to slaughter is by stunning an animal first.

New Zealand is among the few countries that insist ALL halal meat is indeed stunned first, with I might add the support of their Muslim community.

Doittoo desirable in the way all schools having class sizes restricted to below 25 in desirable, no absolutely not practical sadly.

Gimme please read the thread, halal slaughter in the UK is done in the same way as non halal slaughter. Only 2% of all meat is not stunned. So the majority of meat halal or not is killed in the same way, how is that more barbaric?

DoItTooJulia · 30/04/2014 18:23

Oh I agree that it's unlikely to happen, but perhaps for different reasons to you.

What government would want to commit a definition of Halal in Law? That's why we don't have clear labelling, because there is no legal definition.

I still think we should aim for it. And smaller class sizes fwiw!
