Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2014 17:27

I obviously have no problem at all with people avoiding foods they don't wish to eat, whether that's because of religious reasons, vegetarianism or anything else; it's their choice and that's absolutely fine

What I don't understand, though, is why some stores have stopped serving certain items altogether ... surely those who object to whatever-it-is can just choose something else?

I've asked a couple of muslim pals about it and they both feel it's a massive over-reaction on Subway's part; are they wrong, or is there some other explanation?

I Haven't read the whole thread but OP are you aware that being halal doesn't make any difference to how the animal is killed is this country Confused All animals are slaughtered humanely, well, what we consider to be humane.

I don't know how a certain type of butchery (halal) can be considered cruel to animals once the animal is dead anyway Grin

Ploppy16 · 30/04/2014 17:28

Well I've never actually had a Subway sandwich before now but seeing that my local one is (as I thought) Halal, I'm bloody tempted to go and buy one off the back of this thread!
Most of our local takeaways are Halal and tbh considering some of the crap that's passed off as meat in some foods I see no issue.
My FIL used to work as a slaughterman many years ago and saw the changes in meat quality go hand in hand with the care of many farm animals. He got out of the business partly due to this.

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 17:28

But why do you object to halal meat cantbelieve?

littleducks · 30/04/2014 17:30

Puzzled- they switched the bacon to 'turkey bacon' which apparently there is a big market for (round here at least as all supermarkets including tesco express at petrol stations stock halal turkey bacon rashers).

sparechange · 30/04/2014 17:30

TheGirl, halal isn't about butchery. It is about the method in which the animal is slaughtered

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 17:31

I object to the method of slaughter and the role religion plays in that. Am tired of animal welfare taking second place to bloody religion. And before you ask, yes I am a veggie

ImAThrillseekerBunny · 30/04/2014 17:32

Our local baker only sells vegetarian pasties and "sausage rolls" because they're pandering to those bloody vegetarians who don't want to eat meat. I'd boycott them for imposing their "beliefs" on the rest of us if I lost my grip completely didn't love their almond croissants so much.

I agree that if you're eating the chicken they put in a Subways sub then how it was slaughtered was the very least of its problems.

On a related point, I saw an interesting docco about food inspectors going round some Muslim-owned cheap independent takeaways testing the "ham" on the pizzas. The problem is that if you sell pizzas then many people will demand Hawaiians, Pepperoni etc, but the owners and the Muslim customers will want the food to be halal. Hence a lot of the "ham" was reformed chicken dyed pink. The food inspectors were trying to do a deal with the shop owners whereby they'd put a tiny footnote on the menu saying

  • "ham" is actually halal ham substitute Which would make everybody happy apart from the people who were determined to be offended.
TheGirlFromIpanema · 30/04/2014 17:32

littleducks Not in the UK it isn't!

BuzzardBird · 30/04/2014 17:32

Oh,my,god. More stupidity than I can throw a stick at.

Halaham, I love it.

UKIP activists really are that stupid aren't they?

KissesBreakingWave · 30/04/2014 17:32

What I'm taking away from this whole kerfuffle is, as I saw elsenet, CAPITALISM FORCES SANDWICH MAKER TO SERVE RELIGIOUS-THEMED MEAT.

Ban this sick filth, I say.

(Incidentally, all vegetables are halal, so if you want to avoid halal as a vegetarian, you're screwed.)

Cantbelieve you don't care enough to actually find out the facts though do you Grin

Why let a little thing like reality get in the way of a good old rant about them blummin forriners eh Wink

Jinsei · 30/04/2014 17:34

Jinsei I am sure you're intelligent enough to realise the difference between a vegan place, and the Subway chain which has never marketed itself as aiming towards anyone except the 'general public'. Now it would seem that they would rather aim themselves at the Muslim population rather than the general public as a whole. Not the best business decision IMO.

Perhaps not the best decision in your opinion, no, but it obviously is the best decision in their opinion. And as it's their business, that's what counts. If they lose lots of money, perhaps they'll go back to selling ham again.

Subway is not a public service provider, and they can target any market that they choose to target. No different from the vegan restaurant.

I have no concerns about my intelligence. Wink

littleducks · 30/04/2014 17:34

TheGirl- sorry what isnt in the UK? Confused

The switching to turkey is, read the link I made up thread to Subway's website

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 17:34

buzzard how original. Did you come up with that all by yourself?

sparechange · 30/04/2014 17:34

Tequila, have you actually read the thread or the article? Confused

This isn't something the entire Subway chain has done
It is something some of their outlets have done
Presumably, these are the stores which are located in areas with a larger-than-average muslim population.
They have done this after feedback from customers, who presumably said something along the lines of 'I'm a bit worried about my crappy sandwich being accidentally contaminated with bacon, so if I knew there was no bacon at all on the premises, I would buy more sandwiches'

If it turns out they don't actually buy more sandwiches, I'm sure Subway will be only to keen to revert back to serving bacon, but if it transpires they don't, they will have made a sensible business decision.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 30/04/2014 17:35

My teenage son tells me our local Subway is "dirty" as ive seen the state of his bedroom its safe to say I will not be eating Subway wether Halal or not Grin

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 17:35

Thegirl. Oh dear Hmm

EduCated · 30/04/2014 17:35

Tequila You should probably get in touch with Subway HQ and offer to act as business consultant. You clearly know more about what they should be doing than their undoubtedly large and experienced teams Hmm

TequilaMockingbirdy · 30/04/2014 17:36

Clearly spare change since my first post says only 200 stores have done this.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 30/04/2014 17:36

Littleducks halal slaughtered meat is all stunned beforehand. Same as every other type of slaughter of animals for human consumption in this country.

Therefore the halal aspect is merely butchery style after death.

squoosh · 30/04/2014 17:37

There must be at least 200 subway branches in every town. Those smelly shops are everywhere!
