Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

Your friend is very silly.

Little boys also needs to feel warm.

GoldShip · 18/09/2012 11:01

No harm at all.

Although they do do 'long johns' for boys

DaveMccave · 18/09/2012 11:02

You are being unreasonable. He'll definitely catch the gay... I'm surprised your friend didn't call social services to be honest.

CMOTDibbler · 18/09/2012 11:02

YANBU. I get really pissed off with people imposing rules on what girls and boys can't wear.

NellyJob · 18/09/2012 11:02

dunno both dd and ds wore tights at that age, as you say they are v practical.
and it's not as though he likes slipping into a frock these days, well not too often anyway Grin

DaveMccave · 18/09/2012 11:03

(and there is 'boys' leggings on ebay, from hong kong, that are very very cute. The swedish brands do boys leggings too...)

Mrskbpw · 18/09/2012 11:03

I used to put my son in tights when it was very cold. His snowsuit used to ride up when he was in the sling leaving his legs bare. Tights solved that problem. He's nearly three now and seems relatively unscarred.

Some people have very strange ideas!

Indith · 18/09/2012 11:04

I was just cursing having thrown out all dd's old tights this morning as I hunted for the babylegs which seem to have vanished off the face of the earth to go on the school run!

bamboobutton · 18/09/2012 11:04

how old is your ds?

my ds has been wearing tights since he was a baby and he's 4 now. he wore them to nursery yesterday as it was chilly. he also tells me that the multicoloured spotty ones are his favourite.

tell your friend they are not tights, they are long johnsWink

Nothing wrong with it at all, I put tights on my DS - he has some fab Thomas ones.

WhatYouLookingAt · 18/09/2012 11:07

All of my boys wore tights. They aren't girls clothes, little boys all over Europe wear tights. We had lots of navy and grey and stripy ones, but sometimes they wore pink/purple/glittery ones.

People are knobs.

weegiemum · 18/09/2012 11:07

Not an issue!

My ds wore tights a lot as a baby as I carried him in a backpack most foe time and his trousers rode up his legs leaving them cold, poor thing!

He's now 10, in p6 (year 5) and has his own tights for cold days when he doesn't have gym. They paugh at him if they realise. But he's a fee spiritand wears tights when it suits him!!

TroublesomeEx · 18/09/2012 11:07

I always put DS in tights as a baby/toddler. In fact I didn't stop till he started school.

I don't see the problem at all. Really. Why would someone say anything other than "that's a good idea, why didn't I think of that?"

peterpie · 18/09/2012 11:07

How ridiculous!

In Spain it is perfectly normal for boys to wear tights and they make them in bigger sizes for older boys too.

And no, YANBU

meditrina · 18/09/2012 11:08

I out tights on my DSes when they were babies. It's a good, practical step. Less good when it gets to toilet training though, so you'll probably want to discontinue before that.

Fakebook · 18/09/2012 11:08

Thomas tights?! Where did you buy those from goingtoofast?

My son is 8 months, and I can see myself putting them on him for years to come.

I might go and have a little google at Scandinavian boys tights and long johns now Grin.

YANBU. Don't listen to your friend! Little boys have to stay warm too!

vodkaandcaviar · 18/09/2012 11:09

I've never seen a little boy wearing tights but I have seen one in navy leggings. Whatever's practical, I guess! It's not really your friend's place to tell you what to put on your child.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 18/09/2012 11:10

Pay no attention :) as long as baby is warm and comfy makes no difference!!!! :)

OpheliaBumps · 18/09/2012 11:12

My german relatives sent tights over for DTD and DTS last winter, lovely and practical. When we visited over Xmas, the soft play places were full of boys up to about 7 wearing tights.

WorraLiberty · 18/09/2012 11:12

These threads are getting like P&C parking lol

YANBU

They're just tights and your friend is utterly insane if she thinks a baby will ever remember wearing them?!

goingtoofast · 18/09/2012 11:13

Fakebook my mum found them in charity shop - had been looking for boys ones for ages and she found them by chance!

WhatYouLookingAt · 18/09/2012 11:14

How would you notice if a boy was wearing tights...under trousers? They look like socks.
One of mine still wears tights and he is 5. He likes to be warm.

Startailoforangeandgold · 18/09/2012 11:15

UANBU
There are big jumps in sleep suite sizes, when the legs are too long they get in a total tangle.

Tights seem a great idea to me!
