Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

Yep, DS2 was quite capable of losing both shoes and both socks on quite a short journey when I was carrying him in a sling or in his "howdah". Tights were the only way forward. In fact, I'd say they were essential.

reddwarf · 22/09/2012 08:09

totally normal in most of europe, not just the far far north for boys to wear tights. And the young ones at kindergarten age only wear tights under their snow trousers, then when indoors (at home or kindergarten) they just have the tights on (like I said, we're talking littlies, not a big strapping 10 year old) but they just run around kindergarten in their tights, then slip their snow trousers back on to go outside.

Totally normal.

But you can order them from H&M, C & A and the like, and get them delivered.

I'm in Scotland, and will certainly be getting some footed tights for LO - I've got him leggings already, but actual tights will be really handy. He'll be crawling/walking over this winter, and will need something warm to go under his snowsuit. Hell, I've been known to wear thermal tights from October to March. It's bloody cold up here!

MistressIggi · 22/09/2012 10:37

Although it breaks up the monotony of the day, I am getting a bit tired of strangers running after me handing back ds's socks. Looking forward to the arrival of the tights!
He is currently wearing leggings under some dungarees that finish at the knee. I am using every item of clothing that has been given to me in the size he is now (plus re-using ds1's who was born in a different season) so it will be much cheaper to use tights under light trousers than to buy specially padded ones. I like the idea of layering too, can remove so they don't overheat.

Curly my ds often wears stripy tights over a vest in the house and then denim short or dungarees over when we go out. I live outside London.

I grew up in Europe where boys weraing tights is common place.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 23/09/2012 19:13

H&M kids sell boys tights. They are perfect for Winter and the norm in Europe.

YANBU.

ConfessionsofaMumpreneur · 29/11/2012 11:16

My youngest wears boys tights all the time - there are great companies out there at the moment that stock unique designs that are even unisex or just for boys. Featuring cars, spiders, mushrooms etc.
I don't understand why in the UK its frowned upon, in Europe its just seen as sensible.
My fave tights are from Ireland, a company called slugs and snails,slugsandsnails.ie/ There are a few UK stockists too.
You can also get boys tights and leggings from KyNa Boutique www.kynaboutique.co.uk/, H&M, and I think Zara has started doing them.

Deffo YANBU! more common sense really, in the freezing temperatures we now have!Smile

Just fell upon this controversial post...as I was searching for boys tights. He's currently wearing his sisters Katvig green and blue striped pair which have been much admired. Who needs cold toes when stupid tights fall off and a gap between your trousers in this weather! Brrr....and shoes are stupid too until they can walk..pipe.. smoke it..Boys Tights Rock!

Fakebook · 21/01/2013 19:31

Yep they really do rock!

DS is sporting a pink pair with hearts (old one of Dd's) today. On top he is wearing a woolly romper from M&S.

Another ds in tights here (21m) he had them last winter too when he was crawling. V. Useful when he goes in the backpack and his trousers ride up too.

I get him the navy and gray ones from h&m which are technically girl ones but who cares.... I really have to hold myself back from the sparkly hello kitty ones though Grin

AnitaManeater · 21/01/2013 19:54

I have some of the boys ones from Ebay and they are great. I like the black and grey stripy panda ones the best. He also slept in pink grobags and is rather fond of his fifi and the flower tots beaker. I couldn't give two hoots and neither could he Grin

Bonbonchance · 21/01/2013 19:59

I had this conversation with some 4 year olds I teach last week...they were all appalled that a boy they knew wore tights, I pointed out how cold it was and why shouldn't a boy be warm, they all thought for a moment and all pretty much said "oh yeah fair enough" end of!

ScaredySquirrel · 21/01/2013 20:09

my 4 yo went into school in his tights today! (under his jeans I should add). He likes them - they keep him warm and he has no issues with them. (they are his sisters' old pairs - he's only worn navy ones so far!).

I didn't know this was an issue for little boys tbh.

pigletmania · 21/01/2013 20:58

YANBU at all, i have bought ds 12 months, black and blue tights to wear under trousers, the main thing is that they are warm, ignore your friend

HeadfirstForHalos · 21/01/2013 21:10

Ds2 (aged 5) has worn tights under his trousers this weekend while we've been sledging. It just seemed the normal thing to do- it's snowy and cold, and dd2 had some she'd grown out of. Sorted. DS1 (9) wore a pair of dd1's leggings under his :)

RueDeWakening · 21/01/2013 21:15

YANBU. And they're called Manly Hose in this house, not tights :o

TBH I thought it was normal and (nearly) everyone did it!

Thaleia · 21/01/2013 21:15

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 - yes, EUR 9,95 for 2 pairs ;)

dorisoliver · 08/08/2014 07:12

I brought my little man some tights ready for the winter. There are some great designs on this site... tights4tots.com/baby-boys-tights
