Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

Here in Germany they sell boys tights with pictures of cars and diggers on, in the boys department :o

Both my boys have worn tights under trousers in winter, and just tights and a vest crawling around the house (tiled floors throughout so cold, plus my crawlers always lost their trousers). I stopped suggesting DS1 wore them once he started dressing himself and was toilet trained though as he wasn't as dexterous with them as DD had been and it led to some urgent calls for help and nearly to a couple of toilet accidents, wasn't worth the stress and older boys seem to wear them less - I recommend them for under 2s though!

Why can't I find spiderman tights on the H&M website? Is it the UK site you are looking at?

PorkyandBess · 18/09/2012 17:45

Your friend is a twit.

Unless your son is 14, the she may have a point.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/09/2012 17:48

YANBU. my ds lived in tights until he was at least 2 yrs old. He had blue ones, orange ones, grey ones, stripey ones...

SpudtheScarecrow · 18/09/2012 18:01

I used to put tights under my sons' trousers when they were small and going through the phase of always pulling off their socks in the buggy/car seat. I remembered this last winter and bought them some to wear under their trousers at football matches (watching not playing) They are 5 and 7 and thought it was a great idea. Am sure they'll be doing it again this winter. People have funny ideas. People always look at me a bit strangely when they realise DD is a girl as she is often in the DSs hand-me-downs or just something not obviously 'girly'.

YANBU

But what would I know?...my friend thinks I'm cruel; I bought DS pink dummies yesterday so he has almost certainley caught The Gay.

Nux · 18/09/2012 19:51

Last year I bought a three pack in Mothercare of cream, red and navy - they did DS very well and weren't too expensive. I have also saved any of his sister's that weren't overly pink/flowery for this year and he will be moving into them soon :-)

moreyear · 18/09/2012 20:32

I love my 20 month olds chubby legs in thick woolen tights - I always tell him they are the 8 th wonder of the world. They look adorable and are so practical. Cream, navy, red, stripey, spotty, cable knit...love them. He also wore oldfashioned vyella gowns as a baby, also beautiful and practical. I just can't be bothered with people who think it 'means' something. What do they think Victorian babies wore or babies in the 1940's?

All the boys AND girls over here (Germany) wear tights under their trousers in winter

but then this is a country which is obsessed with keeping warm

GreenParcel · 18/09/2012 20:40

My sons wear tights.

forevergreek · 18/09/2012 20:42

perfectly normal

when i lived in germany everyone would come for a playdate and take snowsuits or little ones and they would play in tights and a top.
same in nurserys/ playcentres

marriedinwhite · 18/09/2012 20:45

The winter he turned one our ds was put in tights (they had flowers down the sides too because they were in the sale) because he wouldn't keep his socks on and his little feet always looked so cold. Neither would he wear an igloo type suit to keep him warm. In spite of the flowers he plays front row.

DeathMetalMum · 18/09/2012 20:45

My friend had a lovely pair of tights for her ds that were blue with aeroplnes on. As dd lived in tights for her first winter, whatever the sex of the baby I am currently cooking is will be wearing tights, unfortunatley I forgot to ask where she got them from so I may be stuck with plain colours.

SirGOLDBoobs · 18/09/2012 20:46

Tights with diggers on?! Do they do them in an adult size 14?! Grin

OP your friend is being ridiculous. Ignore.

RubyGates · 18/09/2012 20:46

Tights are wonderful. They foiled DS2's attempts to kick them off when he was in the middle of his sock losing phase. Tights saved me a fortune and kept him warm.

notwoo · 18/09/2012 20:50

Makes perfect sense- socks always fall off

Shoshe · 18/09/2012 20:51

Ds wore tights as a baby, he is 35 now, and still wears them (Ok long johns, he's a electrician and gets freezing on site in the winter)

Definitely didnt harm him in anyway (she says as she looks at photo of him at the last Rugby Club do, all purple wig and pink boob tube of him)

TheonlyWayisGerard · 18/09/2012 21:17

just
They were in the UK catalogue, but not the latest one. I'm miles away from the nearest store, so I don't know whether they have them in.

Fakebook · 18/09/2012 21:32

justpondering they're in the socks section:

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 18/09/2012 22:46

ds looks like an acrobat hen he is wearing dd's his hite tights and white vest. very cute.

he needs warm legs as much as his sister... no tights at school now but he did at nursery.

foreverondiet · 18/09/2012 22:49

Depends on age.

In my book (assuming tights are plain navy/grey etc):

Def ok all winter for pre-shoe wearing baby boy (ie less than 18 months) as unlike socks they stay on.

Acceptable on colder days for nappy wearing toddlers (ie less than 2.5 years) - they aren't aware that tights are for girls and getting them down quickly for a wee not a problem.

Acceptable on freezing days for nursery school / reception aged children - DS1 wanted to wear DD's old navy tights under trousers in nursery and reception as it was freezing - now in year 2 he'd prefer to be freezing.
