Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

it doesnt matter what colour or pattern they are for a baby/toddler! and you can get funky unisex ones. boys dont have to be limited to plain navy or grey! how boring!

and they can wear them at any age, a poster on thr previous page said her rugby playing teen wears them!

my boys still wear them under jeans etc sometimes when.its cold, not an issue.

My son wore tights from his first winter and then every winter until yr 2 and then we swapped to long johns!

(Though after yr 1 my son requested no tights / long johns on PE days lol tho asked for them on other days!!)

I had similar comments... rubbish! Better warm than not!

halcyondays · 19/09/2012 07:30

Apparently dh used to wear tights when he was little. It doesnt appear to have scarred him for life.Grin

nameuschangeus · 19/09/2012 07:34

It is a genius idea.

nellyjelly · 19/09/2012 07:36

Polarn o Pyret do tightish fitting leggings which are unisex and in nice colours? They have an online shop. I got loads of their legging for bot Dd and Ds. Not chrap but hard wearing and wash well.

golemmings · 19/09/2012 07:59

I just bought DS a pack of navy and grey tights in boots. I'd love to find some funky rainbow tights for him that aren't mostly pink...

I love tights. And over knee socks.

TerraNotSoFirma · 19/09/2012 08:08

My DS will have his sisters old tights on under his joggers this winter. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Your friend has issues ;)

YouForgotToCallMePeppa · 19/09/2012 08:10

I live in Germany, and they sell boy's tights everywhere here, I think it is considered completely normal for little boys to wear them under their trousers to keep warm.
I just bought DD a lovely pack of boy's tights in blue and navy, with little monsters on them - she was a bit suspicious when she saw the photo on the front of boys wearing them, and complained they were for boys, but the lure of the monster pictures meant she relaxed her usual antipathy towards "boy's clothes".
There is nothing wrong with boys wearing tights, especially baby boys - they are definitely much easier to crawl in.
Vertbaudet do lots of tights in unisex colours, as well as knee length socks.

bigTillyMint · 19/09/2012 08:11

My DS used to parade around in his sisters tights and not much else all the time when he was 2-5yrs old. He also used to dress in her ballet outfit and once went shopping with me in a Robin Hood outfit (complete with specially bought green tights)

He is now 11 and a football-mad alpha-male type, but he still grins at the photos. And we have lots!

Agree with OneMoreChap

Tell your friend most of the guards outside Buck House will be wearing thick woolies on winter shifts, as do many of the troops in Afghan on cold mornings and the bobbies outside No 10.

So if she's scared about him catching the gay he'll be OK. Confused

Oh and YANBU!

Nottigermum · 19/09/2012 08:14

I was in john lewis last winter and a couple (East European) was wondering why they don't sell tights for boys. In many cold countries tights for boys are part of a normal wardrobe, and I am from Northern Canada and remember that there used to be tights for little boys in catalogues and shops. The couple actually complained to a shop assistant and she was absolutely baffled that boys could wear tights too... I had used to have baby leg warmers for my boys when they were little. They used to wear them sometimes under, sometimes over their trousers. I had loads of comments that it was a very sensible thing to do in the cold. www.babykind.co.uk/babylegs.htm

WandaDoff · 19/09/2012 08:32

Both of my boys wore tights when they were babies, it was practical.

limitedperiodonly · 19/09/2012 09:18

YY to bossybritches and onemorechap.

My dad and BIL wore tights under their trousers and they did/do very masculine jobs.

DH wears support tights because he has to stand a lot. Or maybe he's caught gay from the huge number of gays who work in his industry. He is quite good at colours Hmm

CaptainSillyBeardyDaddyman · 19/09/2012 09:22

Tis a fine piratical tradition. I be sure he'll make a fine crew member! Although they do be catching on me peg leg. Cursed splinters ladder me tights! Avast!

TheBigJessie · 19/09/2012 09:55

On the one hand, you're completely reasonable. On the other, I, like Kayano, hate tights! The thought of removing tights for a nappy change is making me shudder.

So, I used baby legwarmers instead. Grin

OneMoreChap · 19/09/2012 10:11

limitedperiodonly I remember telling a colleague I was wearing vest and LJ; you could see the vest under my corporate shirt...

He said "What do you look like?"

I said "Warm".

I despair when I see kids coming out of school in winter. Loads of them no coats/hats/gloves. Of course, many schools don't have lockers now, I understand, and the kids don't want to carry heavy wet outdoor clothing...

Badgerina · 19/09/2012 10:11

YABU

It has been scientifically proven that dressing your boy in tights will turn him into a homosexual. Either than or he'll grow a vagina. You're being an extremely irresponsible mother.

PeshwariNaan · 19/09/2012 10:14

YANBU. My nephews wear tights under their trousers in the winter and they love them. It's just another layer.

Big effing deal!

oldraver · 19/09/2012 11:39

H+M do 'boys tights' though I got a shocked look when I asked for them in store and had to order them online. DS is 6 and loves his tights, they go well with wellies in winter, no gaps or socks working themselves down

Noqontrol · 19/09/2012 11:49

I used to buy ds white tights to wear under clothes. I did get some funny comments when I changed his nappy though. In case he caught the gay you know. At nearly 3 his favourite colour is pink, so maybe they were right and he does have the gay.

Grin
sparklekitty · 19/09/2012 11:57

I'm a teacher in Y2 and tons of the boys in my class (mainly the ones whose families are from Eastern Europe and so are used to very cold winters) wear tights under their trousers all through the winter time. Don't see a problem with it at all, some of the other boys seem a bit jealous when they see how snuggly warm they are :)

SarryB · 19/09/2012 12:02

Gay babies. Haha!

I just received some leggings for LO in the post, from the only UK seller I could find that stocks those ones from Hong Kong.

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 19/09/2012 12:19

Mothercare do 'boy' tights in navy, grey, brown etc with boats, cars 'boy' themes and patterns all over them which are specifically made for the franchised countries such as Russia etc.
Completely normal abroad in colder countries.
Don't see an issue with it for babies or older kids myself. Very practical. Your friend is weird!

DoIgetastickerforthat · 19/09/2012 12:47

I've put all my three boys in tights as babies and toddlers and then long johns when they were got older, it's a no brained really, they are such a practical piece of clothing.

People are bonkers though. When I went to M&S to buy some red ones for DS1 I couldn't find any in his size so asked the assistant, she pointed me in the direction of the pink ones, I said I wanted red as DS it was DS'S favourite colour (I would have bought the pink ones, not that fussed about kids having to wear gender specific colours), and when she realised that I was buying them for a boy, lectured me about how I couldn't put a boy in clothes that were designed for a girl and the seams would hurt his penis and would generally be very bad for him.

Bought them in Mothercare instead. Silly women - her and your friend.
