Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

The seams would hurt his penis Hahahahahaha! That is one of the best things I've read all day.

sidress · 19/09/2012 13:54

Just tell him they are boys tights/leggins/whatever. As long as they are plain and a suitable colour (blue/black etc.) whats the big deal?

FatFaced · 19/09/2012 20:26

Your friend sounds like a dick. HTH.

Scrubber · 19/09/2012 20:53

Just got some for DS, he's crawling everywhere and his socks come off easily. He's also a master at pulling his socks off and trying to eat them. He wore pink tights today under his jeans, have I made him into a gayer? Don't care if I have!

Fakebook · 19/09/2012 20:58

Oh scrubber, DS is wearing pink tights right now and breast feeding Grin

They've probably been linked already, but all of these are just absolutely adorable.
If I had a boy, he would be in them everyday!

Anyway, I would rather have a baby boy in pink tights, than a cold-legged baby boy!

SarryB · 20/09/2012 13:15

Oh Scrubber - you will only have yourself to blame when he turns into a giant gay. Tut tut.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 13:16

I'd just come on to mention the baby leggings! Ds had them they are lovely.

MistressIggi · 20/09/2012 21:54

I am now obsessed with getting tights for my baby. Ebay seem to have the biggest range, I don't just want plain ones oh no. Have raided Primark today but only came away with some (girls) red woolly leggings.

maxmillie · 21/09/2012 09:39

probably already mentioned but H&M, sometimes Mothercare and very occasionally Next do tights in boy colours.

I get my ds, nearly 2 the lovely rainbow striped ones from here:
www.impkids.co.uk/shop.php?p=search_results&search_terms=tights&Look2=Search

he wears them with short dungarees and I think it looks great.

McHappyPants2012 · 21/09/2012 09:42

always put DS in tights in the winter, he would take his shoes and socks off and his feet would be freezing once i noticed.

McHappyPants2012 · 21/09/2012 09:43

always put DS in tights in the winter as a baby, he would take his shoes and socks off and his feet would be freezing once i noticed.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2012 09:44

I rarely put tights on my DD mainly because she's not a dress type and if their feet get wet you have to change the whole thing. (Rather than leggings+socks, you just change the socks)
And tights under trousers? Nightmare.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2012 09:44

Blush so the point is, I didn't put my DS in tights either !

aufaniae · 21/09/2012 09:50

I was going to get cream tights for baby DS to go under a kilt for a spring wedding. DP and MIL were shocked Grin A definite no no apparently!

I thought it was very sensible myself!

MIL produced some thick knee-high woolly socks for him in the end. I'm sure he would have been more comfortable in nice warm tights, but I gave in that time as I could agree it was not "traditional" Scottish attire!

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 21/09/2012 10:36

Haven't read through all the thread - but have been looking for tights that aren't pink and glittery myself
some lovely ones here or there are nice leggings/footless patterned tights which have cool patterns on them on ebay for about £2.50

MistressIggi · 21/09/2012 22:43

Have just ordered two pairs from ebay - one pair has cars.
Another of those things I-didn't-know-I-needed-till-mumsnet-told-me-I-did, bit like that mumsnet scarf I bought. Blush

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/09/2012 22:50

Feel like i've stepped into a parallel universe!! I have never in my life seen a baby boy wearing tights!!! Trousers and a top on either girl or boy, or if wearing a dress (girls- never seen a baby boy in a dress) and weather is cold enough then tights underneath!

What are your baby boys wearing on their top half if they've got tights on their bottom half? Confused

NellyJob · 21/09/2012 22:51

you wouldn't notice the tights cos they are under trousers when out, silly.

MistressIggi · 21/09/2012 23:02

I want mine for putting on him when in his sling, always miles of cold baby flesh on display as the trousers seem to ride up. Babies often have a coat/cardigan on top half, but trousers can be very lightweight indeed.
If I see other boys in tights, will that out them as MNers?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/09/2012 23:26

Nope, still not getting it. Don't give a fig about the boy/girl issue. I just don't understand why in this country it's necessary to put children in tights if they've already got trousers on. This "trousers are lighrweight" argument: well, yes, summer trousers are lightweigt but surely you can still buy winter trousers/bottoms these days???? Padded jogging bottoms or heavy corduroy? I imagine in a centrally heated house in this country a child (boy or girl) in tights, heavy trousers and a vest, long-sleeved top plus jumper/cardi over would be SWELTERING.

I completely get the idea for Scandinavian countries. Just not in our relatively mild one.

Conversely if you dress a baby girl in a dress and then just tights then by the same token she will be cold-of-leg and needs trousers over the top of them?

Genuinely Confused

SpudtheScarecrow · 21/09/2012 23:41

Curly, all of mine, 2 boys and 1 girl were compelled to pull off their socks immediately when put in the buggy ( and shoes too if they were wearing them.). As we have a dog and used to do long, cold walks sometimes, tights stayed on when pulled. The toe got longer and longer and the DC got more and more bemused but feet stayed warm.

They wouldn't keep blankets on either.

And we lived in the North East - of Scotland- for DS1 and -of England for DS2so not Scandanavian but pretty nippy in the Winter.

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 21/09/2012 23:42

Because socks fall off / get pulled off 10000 times a day

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/09/2012 23:52

Ok, I see the advantages in those situations, spud. Guess I've never seen it because I'm in a city maybe. No long country walks!

Thanks.

Hopandaskip · 22/09/2012 03:15

An old friend told me that I was going to 'turn DS#1 gay' because I dressed him in girls clothes from time to time. Not flowery obviously girl ones, gender neutral ones that happened to be in the girls' dept, e.g. blue zippy hoodie with no styling or embellishment.

Ds#1 is now 16 and not gay.

ignore, ignore.
