Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

My DS wore tights too under trousers when it got cooler. I felt when he was in his buggy his legs got cold. They were plain navy/plain red. He's 13 now and is showing no signs of being scarred for life.

HotPinkWeasel · 18/09/2012 14:34

It's not really proving a point as historically men were wearing the tights well before the ladies started.

Theas18 · 18/09/2012 14:40

Bonkers response!
Tights on boys are completely normal in cold countries. a friend in austria was quite surprised initially that they sold boys design tights but then it got to winter lol

Fakebook · 18/09/2012 14:44

Thanks for the Tykes link, the tights are adorable. I can see how you could wear them under trousers, and they'd look like socks. Very niche market though, and it's suprising because it's bloody freezing here in the winter.

Much more common on the continent for boys to wear tights, I used to put DS in tights under his dungarees in the chillier months

maxmillie · 18/09/2012 14:51

ffs thiat is ridiculous. I have 3 boys and all three wear/have worn tights. As someone else said, this is perfectly normal in Europe.

With my 18m old I make a real feature of it - rainbo, stripey ones etc with dungarees.

She's an idiot.

PowerDresser · 18/09/2012 14:54

I can't see what's wrong with handed down tights or leggings for small children. Anyway, it's no business of anyone else to tell you what to dress your children in, is it, OP?

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 18/09/2012 15:25

YABU, only girls are allowed to have nice warm legs in colder weather.

I jest (in case it wasn't obvious), both my DS's wore tights when they were little. Youngest DS will probably have tights again this year if it's very cold.

ophelia275 · 18/09/2012 15:45

Both my dss wore and the littlest still wears tights in colder weather. It is only in the (dysfunctional) UK where it is laughed upon. In places like Germany it is totally normal and commonplace.

ScatterChasse · 18/09/2012 15:52

My DBro was at a prep school where the boys had to wear shorts up to year 5/6 (can't quite remember). Anyway one winter it was very cold, and you'd be surprised how many of them went in with their sister's tights under their shorts! (The girls wore fawn tights). They actually put it in the school newsletter saying it was a really good idea Grin.

TittyWhistles · 18/09/2012 15:53

All my boys wore or wear tights in the winter. You can buy woolley navy or red school tights if you're that bothered and they're probably a fraction of the price of specially marketed 'boys tights' (also I'm against 'branding' children with clothes with logos or tv programme characters on)

toysoldiers · 18/09/2012 15:55

My boys both wore tights in the winter. Stops that awful gap between socks and trousers which gets so cold.

I bought beautiful argyle ones from Gap which were very manly, and some bright red and navy striped ones.

I loved my boys in tights. Several people commented but many copied Wink

5madthings · 18/09/2012 15:57

i put my boys in tights as well and leggings, h&m and gap are both good fir unisex leggings and tights ime.

PiggeryJokery · 18/09/2012 16:07

ds used to wear tights or leggings, he looked adorable with his little navy legs scurrying about all cosy Smile. He won't wear them now though - he thinks they are for girls only since he started school.

Kayano · 18/09/2012 16:08

I have no issues with this in principle

I just bloody hate tights lol

PropositionJoe · 18/09/2012 16:09

MIL bought some navy tights for DS1 when he was a few months old. I was outraged and he never wore them. Actually now I think I was being precious and it is a good idea, but it's a bit late now - he is 13!

Minty82 · 18/09/2012 16:17

I don't have a boy, but don't know what I'd do without tights for DD, and seems totally sensible to put them on a boy too - I know my brother wore them as a baby. And your boy's red outfit sounds gorgeous!

TheonlyWayisGerard · 18/09/2012 16:25

I think it's very sensible. Although not everyone agrees. I had a male friend round yesterday, we were browsing the new H&M catalogue and I mentioned that they had Spiderman tights in the boys section of the previous catalogue. His response 'that's one way to make sure your child's gay'. Shock Confused

I told him what an idiot he is.

Xiaoxiong · 18/09/2012 16:26

Proposition out of interest, why were you outraged? Do you just hate tights in general for everyone, like Kayano?

PropositionJoe · 18/09/2012 16:37

Because I thought they were very old fashioned and he was my PFB

Xiaoxiong · 18/09/2012 17:06

Aww Grin DH wears tights sometimes, it's not too late for your DS!

OneMoreChap · 18/09/2012 17:13

I wear LJ.

I also know some policemen and some very hairy-arsed servicemen who've been known to wear tights under uniform if it's cold.

YANB at all U

Trazzletoes · 18/09/2012 17:19

YANBU my Finnish friend posted me some boy tights when DS was a baby because I was putting him in pink ones to keep him warm Grin

Xiaoxiong · 18/09/2012 17:25

This past winter I bought what I thought were plain white ones from Gap for DS. Opened them up to find they had a ruffle bum (not indicated on packet). It's hard enough getting trousers that fit over cloth nappies without a bumfull of ruffles on top.

LadybirdtheCollieDog · 18/09/2012 17:33

In northern Europe, it's absolutely normal for boys to wear tights, under their jeans etc, and then at about the age if 8, they go into long johns. Mine did this when we ved there, and they are strapping lads now, with no transvestism tendencies (that they've told me about, anyway). And so what if they had? I doubt it'd be to do with them wearing tights at the age if 7.

Your friend is not just silly, she's homophobic.
