Boys wearing tights.

It was a chilly day on Sunday, and I had a pair of DD's old tights in the drawer so put them on DS to keep his legs and feet warm as he crawls around the whole house now.

A friend came around and saw him, and told me I'd scar him for life for making him wear girls clothes. I just laughed at her and told her he was in DD's flowery snowsuit for the first 3 months of his life too. I don't have a problem with boys wearing girly clothes when they're babies, but she didn't seem amused.

I went out yesterday and bought him some more cheapo tights from Primark to wear around the house, because they're comfortable, practical and keep him warm. When he's wearing his sleepsuits, his feet get tangled when he's crawling, and the poppers pop open, so there's no point in wearing them. Joggers with feet, also just pull off when he crawls. Socks just get pulled off and put in the mouth.

AIBU? Do people judge you if you make your son wear girls clothes? Are there any type of tights/leggings for boys out there that I've missed or something?

(Just thought I'd add, he looks adorable in his red ones he's wearing today with a manly red rugby shirt :)).

H&M have lovely 'boys' tights, with cars etc. on them. I just buy the plain school type ones though, or anything on special offer.

When did tights for babies start costing about £5 a pair though? (I'm sure back in the day they were only about 2d) Grin

foolingwithmisskitty · 18/09/2012 11:16

just tell your mate the SAS wear tights under their clothes in arctic conditions and I don't think anyone could accuse them of not being manly!

IdoknowtheMuffinMan · 18/09/2012 11:16

Wow, I think that's genius, why did I never think of that?! Very practical.

Saying that, my DS is 4 and at Christmas I had to put him in a pair of his little sisters white tights to be an angel in the nativity play. Honestly, it was like wrestling a bag of angry weasels! I had to go out and buy him his own pair of white leggings Hmm as it was the fact that they were DD's that was the problem.

stinkymice · 18/09/2012 11:16

I found some really nice black and red stripy tights from next for my son to wear when he was about 3. His kindergarten teacher recommended it as he had cold legs!

Fakebook · 18/09/2012 11:21

Oh wow, there is so much available out there. Didn't realise! I just found some Spiderman tights on the H&M website! Who'd have thought eh?!

There's some lovely ones on a site called slugsandsnails - very boyish! (But 12.99? Would need to be a present!)

earlyriser · 18/09/2012 11:23

Lidl have done thermal tights for boys in the past. They were ds's absolute favourite (blue and grey stripes) and he still tries to wear them now, even though the crotch is at knee level, but he is also not adverse to wearing his sister's cast offs.

goingtoofast · 18/09/2012 11:29

polarnopyret.co.uk/child-socks-underwear not cheap but very cute.

fortifiedwithtea · 18/09/2012 11:32

YANBU and I say that as a mum of 2 girls. Tights are sensible, keep feet warm. Socks get pulled off.

On the flip side, boys pj are so much better. No stupid uncomportable button at back of neck when baby is too young to turn. And boys have brush cotton front buttoning pj jackets. warm and so much easier for changong when baby has been sick in the night Grin.

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 11:35

ask Matthew Wright

MyLastDuchess · 18/09/2012 11:36

People are so weird. My friend's DH won't let her put their DS in tights. I think my friend's DH has some serious problems.

My DS wore tights and my SIL always put her 2 boys in them, she thinks their little legs look so cute!

HazleNutt · 18/09/2012 11:37

Only in UK are tights "girls" clothes - as said before, everywhere else in Europe they are just a piece of clothing and a practical one as well.

Fakebook · 18/09/2012 11:45

Thanks for the links and suggestions everyone, some of them are a bit expensive aren't they?!

hully, is Matthew Wright an expert in boys tights? Confused

mylastduchess, my DH wears long johns under his trousers during the winter, so he was very "for" the idea of DS wearing tights. Yep, some men are weird like that though, my brother is like that.

I have it on good authority that lots of men wear tights under their jeans when they go to watch football in the winter. But I bet if you asked them, they'd all deny it...

lisaro · 18/09/2012 12:37

I had all boys. It never occurred to me to put them in tights, it sounds really practical for in the house. I think if he's 14 and going to school in a hand me down skirt comments would not be unreasonable.
Fwiw my ex used to wear my tights on the ranges and on exercise in winter.

MumofWombat · 18/09/2012 13:11

My DS (almost 18 months) has worn Bonds leggings most days over winter. Bless him, he didn't inherit my bum as he just doesn't have hips and to find trousers to fit him is a nightmare. They look much more comfy than jeans (although one pair looks like a pair of skinny jeans and someone asked me with a right old cats bum face how could I put them on my child....) and he can move easily in them. In fact, I have already decided that I will be buying them as new baby presents for when my cousins start having kids back in the UK.

HotPinkWeasel · 18/09/2012 13:22

My Ds wore tights as a baby and toddler. He is now 9 and appears not go be too traumatised by the fact.

My Dad still nicks my mums for golf in the winter if he has no clean long johns. My Dad appears not have have any issues either at 63 after 23* years of occasional tight wearing.

*my mum set fire to his rugby kit on his 40th birthday and bought him a set of golf clubs.

PinsAndNoodles · 18/09/2012 13:28

My DS wears tights under his trousers to school in the winter if it's particularly cold. He begs to wear them because he likes girly things Grin

PinsAndNoodles · 18/09/2012 13:29

Should have said he's 5.

KenLeeeeeee · 18/09/2012 13:32

YANBU, and your friend is odd. Show her this website! tykestights.co.uk/

anditwasallyellow · 18/09/2012 13:34

I don't think that there's a problem with putting a baby in 'girls' clothes, as long as they're comfy that's the most important thing. I do sometimes wonder about parents who do this though, are you trying to prove a point or something? I managed fine with ds without ever putting him in tights, he always wore a babygrow or some joggers over it, if these come off then surely tights would too? Personally I think tights are horrible and uncomfortable on anyone including girls.

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 18/09/2012 13:36

My OH used to wear tights under his trousers (so did I) when we worked outside in cold weather.

In the past all babies wore dresses. I've seen a picture of my Dad in one!

SlightlyJaded · 18/09/2012 13:41

Was also just about to link to Tykes Tights

Loads of tights in "boy styles"

EasilyBored · 18/09/2012 13:42

I put DS (8 months) in girls leggings. Boys trousers seem to be universaly ugly and uncomfortable. He's currently rocking some Tesco girls jeggings with a check shirt.

I've given up on socks, I think bare feet are better for learning to stand and crawl anyway. I'd have to staple them on to get them to stay.

Goldenjubilee10 · 18/09/2012 13:55

I have all boys and have never thought of putting them in tights but ds2 had 3 pairs of leggings - one of them blue flowery - when he was crawling and they were great.
