that ITV documentary on now is treating cold blooded murderers as normal human beings. They are showing no remorse but detailing their crimes, I think it's awful they are even being given airplay, done get me started on the perks they have (Christmas dinner) etc. The poor families of their victims is what I think.....

Yawn

If prison is such an easy ride why such high rates of suicide/suicide attempts?

MyLittleMiracles · 25/06/2012 22:01

But why is there such a high rate or re offending> if it was that bad they would be too scared of going back to re offend? Not seeing the documentary though so cant comment on it

frannie1981 · 25/06/2012 22:01

Missing the point...... I am questioning the decency of them talking about their crimes etc whilst being shown eating dinner etc. All these men were lifers ie found guilty of murder.... Just seems wrong to me

You are being unreasonable to not know what channel you are watching its on 4

wannabestressfree · 25/06/2012 22:13

I am not watching it but.......... they are human beings. They have committed terrible crimes but what makes us a civilised society is the way we treat those people.

Sorry about your dinner n'all.........

RafaprefersHobnobs · 25/06/2012 22:26

Some of them did show remorse. And pretending people like those on the programme don't exist is pretty blinkered.

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 25/06/2012 22:26

Thanks for clearing that up gingerchick I've been trying to work out how a programme about the Jewish population in Manchester had anything to do with murderers eating Christmas dinner!

And what wannabe said.

RafaprefersHobnobs · 25/06/2012 22:27

Would you prefer it if they didn't eat, or maybe gruel would be mor to your taste.

oshuk · 25/06/2012 22:29

Their lunch looked better than some mners could afford at christmas judging by some of threads on here. Completely wrong for them to have music systems and being able to eat in their rooms too.

CrikeyOHare · 25/06/2012 22:31

The punishment is going to prison, not what happens while you're in there. And this nonsense about it being like a "holiday camp" is exactly that - nonsense, no matter what the Daily Mail have to say on the matter.

And people SHOULD talk about their crimes. The more we as a society understand the better.

LentillyFart · 25/06/2012 22:32

I think we should put a stop to all this dinner eating. The dinner eating bastards will never learn as long as we keep this up.

GhouliaYelps · 25/06/2012 22:36

I was really disturbed by the man who strangled his wife. He was studying for an Arts degree and his daughters visit him smiley faced.

It may not be very PC but I couldn't stop thinking that his wife was dead in horrific circumstances and he seems very, very comfortable indeed.

ToughTed · 25/06/2012 22:38

so what if they commit suicide if they are a killer, if they didnt murder someone they wouldnt be in there so why would anyone feel sorry for them, life should mean life and be more like americia in the prison system, thats why people reoffend as its not punishment in there!

RafaprefersHobnobs · 25/06/2012 22:40

Toughted could you give me the stats on reoffending rates in America?

frannie1981 · 25/06/2012 22:41

There are dinners then there are extravagant dinners. Not suggesting they are denied of basic human needs but showing no remorse (which majority didn't) then showing being treated well is not quite right. Yes AIBU for wrong channel bashing.

OP posts:
ToughTed · 25/06/2012 22:41

the ones in for life wouldnt be reoffending would they??

Empusa · 25/06/2012 22:42

"life should mean life and be more like americia in the prison system, thats why people reoffend as its not punishment in there!"

Um.. you know they re-offend in the US too right?

cricketballs · 25/06/2012 22:43

I have watched it and was more astonished at some (not all) of their attitude's towards their crimes than the fact they were given processed turkey for their Christmas lunch.

In fact, I think it was a very informative and DM (even two of those being interviewed agreed) bashing as their lives are not all playing video games all day every day as some press would have us believe

ToughTed · 25/06/2012 22:43

see my point above empusa

RafaprefersHobnobs · 25/06/2012 22:46

Parts of america have some of the highest murder rates in the world despite having the death penalty. Seems like even the ultimate deterrent isn't all that effective.

wannabestressfree · 25/06/2012 22:49

Oh I really disagree with the feeling that gruel/ no comforts etc is the way forward.
No one knows the circumstances that have led people there. There are many reasons including severe mental health problems, upbringing and of course just 'because' that people commit awful crimes.
And I can't help thinking 'to forgive is divine' perhaps the daughters feel its more wasted life if they hate/turn their back. I feel they should be commended.

I am not a woolly liberal but I have insight into someone who would do things like that. I am the mother of one...........

ToughTed · 25/06/2012 22:51

evil cannot be deterred, so thats why when they do go to prision it should be a tough punishment for what the poor families are been punished for the killers actions taking a loved one away,,,,so why should they have games consoles, when even most hospital wards dont even have a tv??? so much money is spent on prisions here getting them qualifications when hard working people that dont commit crimes have to pay for.....they looose their right when they commit a crime,,,,it was THEIR CHOICE TO LOOSE IT!

LucieMay · 25/06/2012 22:52

Given the sector I work in, I found it extremely interesting viewing and I have a lot of respect for the prison staff who work with these chaps day in and day out.

Puffinsaresmall · 25/06/2012 22:58

Wannabe - I'm with you. I had great parents, good education etc etc but if I hadn't had maybe I would have ended up in prison, who knows? The things they did are horrendous but maybe it would be better to look at the causes of crime and try to prevent those? If lots of killings happen in an instant of lost control (?) then prison as a deterrent doesn't work anyway, because they aren't thinking at that point surely?
