that ITV documentary on now is treating cold blooded murderers as normal human beings. They are showing no remorse but detailing their crimes, I think it's awful they are even being given airplay, done get me started on the perks they have (Christmas dinner) etc. The poor families of their victims is what I think.....

wannabe - Although I haven't posted on it, I've been reading your thread about your son since the beginning and been absolutely heartbroken for you and the stress your family is going through. Following your experiences has made me a more understanding person, and I saw the documentary in a different light because of that. You and your son are in my thoughts, and I really hope things will improve for you both soon. Thanks

wannabestressfree · 26/06/2012 00:12

This is a pretty emotive issue for me so will bow out. But I will say the staff in prisons, units etc do an amazing job.

Just turn to someone you love and think how you would want them to be treated if they committed a crime. Prison/ locked down life is brutal regardless of luxuries.

Night all

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:13

Can you stop saying 'the victim's family' and stuff. 'The victim's family' is telling you that we don't believe in torture. You may not understand it's torture, but it is.

Please stop speaking for my pain and loss. It minimises what we went through.

wannabestressfree · 26/06/2012 00:15

Thank you deathbychocolate that means a lot. I didn't want to hijack a thread. It's just my experiences have made me more understanding.

ToughTed · 26/06/2012 00:19

but giving the murdrers so many more rights than they deserve, does minimise it, oh ok then.

LucieMay · 26/06/2012 00:20

Tellies were first introduced in cells after the strangeways riots.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:22

No ToughTed, you just don't have an understanding of basic psychology.

be grateful that the guards know what they're doing. They're the ones doing such a shit job and all the prisoners are killing each other. Oh, and killing us because they've escaped. Since the guards don't know what they're doing.

Wait..Hmm

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 26/06/2012 00:22

My Uncle gained some 'free qualifications' when he was in prison (not for murder though) He believes that these helped 'save his life' as without them he never would have got a job, and probably would have moved on to 'serious' crimes, instead of becoming a decent law abiding (and actually lovely) man.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:23

^^ Bingo.

RubyFakeNails · 26/06/2012 00:25

Did anyone see the documentary on bbc3 recently about a girl in the US called cyntoia brown. She was about 16, had killed a man, she claimed self-defence but was convicted of murder (she had been working as an underage prostitute, had gone to this mans house with him, where he proceeded to show her lots of guns etc, he was aggressive, she believed he was going to kill her and shot him). The district attorney who was interviewed said society needs to be protected from people like her. I just found it...l was lost for words.. Flabbergasted maybe.

To me it's also about the fact, that if a life is taken and wasted in that way, shouldn't we try and take something positive from it. To not then waste another life by locking them up to go stir crazy. I feel so sincerely we cannot place so much importance on life then show so little value to other lives.

ToughTed · 26/06/2012 00:27

i have a alevel in psychology actually so i think i have more than a basic knowledge on the subject, and i dont know why you keep going on about guards, i have no problem with them doing their jobs they werent the ones that commited a crime.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:32

I don't know what an A level is. s that university? I'm shocked and disturbed that is your view if you actually understand how the brain works. :(

I'm 'going on' about the guards because THEY are the ones who risk their safety every day with the criminals. You. Don't. And I'm not comfortable hiring thugs to do the job.

We go through such ridiculous lengths now to become a cop (which I am doing) or to become a prison guard to prove we are not thugs.

Were people happier when police were bullies who wielded their power over you?

We did it your way for hundreds of years. Lots of people died. That's why we've gone to such lengths to create the new way.

TheFarSide · 26/06/2012 00:33

I saw the Cyntoia documentary Ruby. She seemed pretty damaged but young enough to benefit from some kind of treatment and rehabilitation.

ToughTed · 26/06/2012 00:33

and why should working tax payers pay for their qualifactions, they could of done a qualifcation without commiting a crime....why if other people want to go further in life have to pay for their qualifcation.... i dont understand the logic in this argument. we arent going to agree, i believe if u kill someone or peodophile, etc, i dont giv a s*t about what happens to them in prison they didnt give a s*t about the person they abused/killed so why should anyone care about them

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:36

You do understand that not every single person in prison is a killer, right? Not even most of them are. School is offered to try and reduce the risk of re-offending. THAT is what it is all about. Minimising the amount of people who get hurt the most.

Tough luck if you don't think it's all mean enough.

It's like talking to a brick wall.

TheFarSide · 26/06/2012 00:39

For someone who's studied psychology ToughTed you don't seem to have much insight into why people might commit murder.

As a taxpayer, I don't have a problem with prisoners taking qualifications.

LucieMay · 26/06/2012 00:39

ToughTed most prison education I simply basic skills in literacy and numeracy, which I believe are available free of charge in via community. A large proportion of prisoners have skills lower than primary aged children.

ilovesooty · 26/06/2012 00:39

Precisely.

RubyFakeNails · 26/06/2012 00:39

FarSide I thought that too, I couldn't get over her tbh, it really gripped me. The way some of the prosecutors wanted to just throw her away at 16! That's the same ages as my Dd1 and DS. I felt like they couldn't see the irony in what they were doing.

Ted I don't mean to sound condescending but you shall make us all blind. You're views are my absolute nightmare.

Empusa · 26/06/2012 00:40

Lurking An A-level is the step between GCSE's and Uni. A level psychology (from what I remember of my A level psychology course) is fairly superficial, though one of the units did include learning about the Stanford Prison Experiment. Which had disastrous consequences.

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 26/06/2012 00:40

But they probably wouldn't have done the qualification if they werent in prison. Like Lurking says, it reduces the risk of re-offending.
Since getting his free qualification, my Uncle turned his life around and spent the next 40 odd years as a tax payer. Had he not got this qualification, he says it is higly likely he would have committed more and more crimes, ultimately costing the tax payer more as he would have been in prison again.

ToughTed · 26/06/2012 00:41

didnt say it was just killers and pedos, but they are the prisoners who i dont emphaise with and dont think they deserve any rights. and doing it the nice approach seems to be working well with the growing rate of crime :/ hmm ok. give it another 30 years or so and see what sort of society we live in then when everyone is allowed to do what they want as you cant breech their human rights.....everyone will be f**kd, good luck with your belief of the right system too pc springs to mind

ilovesooty · 26/06/2012 00:41

Well said.

Tough Ted you're arguing like a six year old. I find it frankly unbelievable that you actually studied psychology.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:43

So basically, you did high school Psych. Uh..So did I? Congrats. Hmm No, you have no understanding of psychology and I am very glad you don't work in the system. Luckily they catch vigilante types out very quickly nowadays. That's why less prison guards and prisoners are dying.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 00:44

It's not too PC, you're just embarrassingly uneducated. You could use with a prison qualification. Hey, you wouldn't even have to pay! Hmm
