So I have an alcohol problem. Have done for years, Christmas may not be the best time to stop but I have to. It's killing me and destroying my family. I will take today to make my plan. I already have all the quit books just need to do it now.

Any long term sober people have any tips for me? I guess at the moment it's hour by hour.

Well done in taking the first steps! One day at a time, I wish you lots of strength and courage on your journey.

QuicklyNowThen · 07/12/2021 07:52

Sending you lots of resilience wishes op. Good luck

Essexmummy88 · 07/12/2021 07:55

I am in the same boat, would love to join you.

No tips, it's bloody hard.

TheOldestCat · 07/12/2021 08:00

I am coming up to four years since making the same decision. It is the best thing I ever did.

Hour by hour is a great plan. You just keep on doing that for now. Tips are tricky because we are all so different but what helped me:

  • the quit lit, which you already have. Read read read. It will resonate. You will realise so much - so many ‘of course’ moments. The truth that you are gaining a better life may not seem achievable in the early days but it is so true and glimpsing that helped me, it may help you.
  • podcasts if they are your thing. LoveSober is great.
  • find your tribe - Club Soda was great for me in the early days (see Facebook etc)
  • not saying ‘this is it forever’ but having a 90-day plan, ticking off each day seemed depressingly small at first but the days added up.
  • short-term treats - I had to fill that ‘work done kids asleep my time’ mentality with non-alcoholic treats like nice soft drinks, chocolate etc. you can wean yourself off sugar longer term (this may be bad advice but it worked for me).

CBT also helped me - not about giving up, but dealing with the anxiety and issues that had led to my drinking.

I wish you so much luck and happiness. If I can do this anyone can.

Thank you all for replying, I feel rather emotional this morning not to mention the worst hangover. I have just told my husband I am quitting he just nodded his head, he will support me but he has heard it all before.

Essexmummy88 I would love you to join me on this. I think I need the accountability. I can't rely on myself.

Hey @Rupertpenrysmistress, I remember you from the other thread (where you would obviously be more than welcome though I understand you may prefer your own thread!). Christmas is the best time to get sober! You can do it🙂👍 I hope the hangover eases soon and you feel a bit better x

Essexmummy88 · 07/12/2021 08:32

I will PM you if that's okay Rupert?

Beeinalily · 07/12/2021 08:36

I stopped drinking when my mum died of cirrhosis of the liver. Before that I thought it was a quick and easy death. It isn't. Good luck and God bless, @Rupertpenrysmistress.

Beeinalily · 07/12/2021 08:39

Oh and also - if you're tempted, read the thread about the worst behaviour at Christmas - such a lot of the heartbreak there caused or exacerbated by drink and/or drugs.

I’m on day 48 after doing The Alcohol Experiment with Annie Grace. It’s a 30 day sober trial, it’s very supportive. Download the APP, give yourself these 30 days. The videos are really good.

Greyhedge · 07/12/2021 09:02

I have no experience of this or tips but just wanted to send you my support. You’ve made a brave decision and I send you all my best wishes xx

Rupertpenrysmistress · 07/12/2021 09:08

I remember you to bunniesbunniesbunnies I might pop back I just always feel so bad as it's like admitting my failure, when I can see everyone else doing so well.

I love the support in MN and everyone's lovely comments have helped me this morning. I already have the 30 day experiment on my phone from last time. I will start again. I have quit previously for months and I felt amazing and I know it is making my MH so much worse.

Essexmummy88 feel free to pm me.

The books are a good starting place,I've just read a new one by Veronica Valli called why you drink and how to stop and it's spot on for me, it's probably my favourite quit lit book to date, I have it on audible so I'm not sure of it's out on paper but it makes a lot of sense. Also apps help me the ones you can tick each dry day you have,I like to see them all ticked up,that spurs me on a bit!

Rupertpenrysmistress · 07/12/2021 11:38

I did reply but not sure where it has gone.Thank you everyone for taking the time with your kind words it has really helped me.

bunniesbunniesbunnies I remember you too, I feel like I let people down so stop commenting but I will pop over again.

Essexmummy88 feel free to pm me.

Do you think rehab would help?

BunniesBunniesBunnies · 08/12/2021 09:44

@Rupertpenrysmistress there are lots of people on the thread currently who have returned after a slip up. Lots of long time sober people (some of whom also have had slips in the past) and newbies managing the bumpy road to sobriety. Nobody will judge you. Come and hang out if you like.

DriftingPlateTectonic · 08/12/2021 11:23

Keep going. I'm at day 426 and not looked back. It's so worth it.

Hann2021 · 08/12/2021 11:38

My biggest advice to anyone would be to surround yourself with a sober community - have you followed Sober Dave on Instagram? He has a huge community of people who have chosen to go sober. If you check out his page you will see there are many many many other people in the same situation.

Good Luck - you CAN do it ! x :)

Please can I join you?
Last night I fucked up (yet another) attempt after 20 days
I love total sobriety but find I slip when stressed if my choice of poison is in the house Blush

Actually feel even worse now than earlier

I think Christmas is the best time

Thanks everyone I will check out the recommendations. I don't think I need rehab 🤔. Not sure how I could do it anyway. I think I am a functional alcoholic not that I am trying to minimise my problems, I can go days without I just need to put more effort bit. Didn't really join the sober community before so might try that.

I've just joined the group on the 30 day Annie grace app thing
Rupertpenrysmistress · 09/12/2021 19:36
