I have a treadmill Madame, good idea to buy one.

It’s all grim. Am going to be AF tonight. I think.

MadameF · 16/03/2020 16:35

I think I'd be more worried if I lived in the UK. BoJo doesn't seem to be following the WHO advice at all. And telling all 70 year old + to stay in their homes is discrimination which they warn against.
I didn't get a treadmill in the end - I'll take my chances on the footpaths (I don't think there will be many others about). I just love being outside and a treadmill doesn't give the same endorphins!

longestlurkerever · 16/03/2020 16:45

I agree. I think there needs to be realism on both sides - this virus is deadly and we should be doing all we can to slow it - school closure, wfh, etc, stop everything else except what is needed to support the fight and support people through it. But also an acceptance that there are limits to modern medicine. There comes a point where doing everything you can to address the risk in front of your nose ignores the risks that are sneaking in elsewhere. There is a point at which the cure is worse than the disease and can we really tell ourselves these measures are short term, or do we need to find ones we can live with for longer?

I honestly think we should all stop being so polarised and debate these things more sensibly.

MadameF · 16/03/2020 17:03

Wow, Boris has just announced nothing. No laws, just should work from home, should avoid pubs, should avoid large gatherings.
He doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

longestlurkerever · 16/03/2020 18:17

Lol, that guidance feels like a game changer from where i am sitting. Is quite a relief to be honest. Something concrete, but with some comforting things to cling to. I actually don't think the approaches are so far apart but the presentation is so different that each side looks terrifyingly extreme.

Kids are crying their eyes out over being kept in. I am still not feeling great so think we are self isolating. Think AF is ambitious tonight but hopefully we will adjust to the new (temporary) normal.

MadameF · 16/03/2020 18:33

Longest it is guidance, no guarantee that people will do it. They didn't follow guidance in France regarding socialising hence the legislation.
I think Boris has no balls, he is running scared from passing legislation to close restaurants, bars, cinemas etc as he knows the government would have to organise some form of compensation.

7 days ago France had the same number of cases as the UK has today. Just 4 days ago France had the same number of deaths from the disease as the UK has today. Yesterday the total was 127.

Frouby · 16/03/2020 18:40

I think actually Bojo is right. Or the science bods are. As many people that will die from covid 19 will die from extreme measures to stop covid 19. And covid 19 won't have a vaccine or cure for at least a year so what happens in countries where they introduced strict measures in November when not only is there covid 19 but also other seasonal respiratory diseases.

Flatten the peak until may/june seems sensible.

But anyway. Some good news. Guess who is off to Uni in September? 😁. Obvs not dry cos am absolutely chuffed to bits.

My friend, who is locked down in Spain, says the Spanish are so sociable they will still gather unless there are draconian measures to stop them. There are police on the streets telling people to go home. They are only allowed out one at a time, even if eg dog walking. No visits to the beach, everyone confined to the town.

It’s all scary. For me being AF is going to be a challenge but I’m going to try the approach I had in November when life was quite tough and I still didn’t drink most of the month. Hmm, we’ll see.

Longest, it must be harder with younger kids. We are about to eat and watch soothing telly.

Waterandlemonjuice · 16/03/2020 18:41

Well done Frouby I’m so pleased for you! 🌟🥂💐🍸

MadameF · 16/03/2020 19:22

Congratulations Frouby that's brilliant news 🥂👍🎉🍻

Macron has spoken, at least 15 days confinement except to go shopping or go to work if impossible to work gyy tu I'm home.
But he did say everyone would have the right to practice physical exercise outside, albeit alone and not with friends. I don't think my border collie will be affected,

MadameF · 16/03/2020 19:23

If impossible to work from home that should read!

longestlurkerever · 16/03/2020 19:52

Frouby, congratulations, that's amazing news! Ah i am so pleased.

I am glad you can go running mme. I for one am content with Boris keeping his balls hidden for now.

MadameF · 16/03/2020 21:54

South Korea is the best example of how to manage the Coronavirus crisis
Test
Test
Test
But they are richer than most other countries.

longestlurkerever · 16/03/2020 22:13

Yes, i would love that approach. Drinking wine.

NC4Now · 17/03/2020 08:22

Oh wow Frouby that’s amazing!!! Congratulations. I’m proper chuffed for you 😃

It’s all starting to feel very shit, isn’t it? I don’t do well with cabin fever. I’ve not checked yet, but I presume body combat is off the agenda tonight.
I’m heading into court shortly because the advice is to carry on with that if symptomless, but I don’t think it will be long before that shuts down.

Flossie44 · 17/03/2020 08:31

Wahoooooo frouby, that’s amazing!!!! Well done you!! What will you be studying?? Apologies if I’ve missed it up thread.

Madame, so chuffed you can still run. I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t exercise!!

We’ve decided to stay home. Social distancing for now.

Frouby · 17/03/2020 08:33

Thanks for the congrats. Am super mega chuffed. Offered me either course but going with English with Philosophy. Got all my admin stuff to do which am going to sort tomorrow as weather going to be rubbish.

Bloody mop has broken and can't live without a mop so off to B and Q shortly. Am going to pick up some diy supplies while I am there, might as well get some projects done while we all locked down. And while diy places still open.

Its all very scary. Am turning news off now, will watch again at 4.45pm then ignoring everything on the media and so on because it's all becoming a bit all consuming isn't it.

Oh Frouby ,that is such brilliant news. Congratulations!!!!! 🎉🎉🍷

Flossie, again, I'm so glad you are back.

I'm just on my way out, but was not dry last night. I can't bear to talk about Corona at length. Suffice it to say I will lose my house if it carries on (I will have no income at all for months - no sick pay etc for the self-employed who can't WFH).

longestlurkerever · 17/03/2020 08:43

Yes, agreed Frouby. Turns out most people i know are in same self isolating boat which actually makes ot easier psychologically, esp for dd1 who gets massive fomo. We will be singing from out balconies before you know it. So far keeping busy with practicalities of self isolating so as not to think about darker stuff.

NC4Now · 17/03/2020 09:00

Dion they really need to come up with something for the likes of us very soon, don’t they?
I get money through tax credits and child maintenance that will continue regardless, so I won’t be totally without income, but it will be drastically reduced.
Unfortunately I think we’ve got the wrong government for this crisis.

Accidentalaccountant · 17/03/2020 11:20

Just awaiting evacuation out from Japan. Am drinking wine but forgivable I think. Stay safe all. X

MadameF · 17/03/2020 12:17

Accidental I hope you get back to the UK with no problem

Dion even thought Boris doesn't want to put his hands in his pocket he will have to. Don't worry. I'm in the same boat here and all independent workers will have the right to a minimum sum of 1500€ per month in compensation, plus a postponement of all mortgage, utility bill payments etc. Goodness knows how it will all be paid for.

NC4 I'd rather have Macron in charge than Boris. The fact that Boris is incapable of appearing in public without his two sidekicks, whom presumably he will blame if he needs to shows that he probably isn't the best leader for this sort of crisis.

Frouby we stocked up on everything in the DIY store yesterday so I have enough painting to do to last at least a month in my gites. Plus building stuff for the new old house renovation.

Confinement has started here. I have printed off my form that I need to take with me whenever I go for a run or go shopping. I hope everyone in the UK respects the advice given by Boris and you don't end up with the same confinement legislation as we have. But I don't think they will.

longestlurkerever · 17/03/2020 13:16

Can i make a suggestion that we all try to dial down the political rhetoric? I'm certainly as guilty as anyone but it's
building my anxiety and i am sure i am not the only one. Let's focus on supporting ourselves through whichever particular version of grim we are going through. Lots and lots of love to everyone. Xxxxxxxxx

leavingAqaba · 17/03/2020 14:52

Hi, popping in from a Middle Eastern version of the grim. The country was locked to air traffic and schools closed on the weekend but we are going to get a good dose of military and all at home as of tomorrow.
I’m counting my wine bottles....
Love to all.

Waterandlemonjuice · 17/03/2020 14:56

Sorry Longest, my post about Spain wasn’t helpful, I apologise.

Had a row with dd this morning so that was nice. Not. She is pissed off at being off school (sore throat) and at not being able to meet up with friends this weekend. Suspect it will be cancelled anyway but she screamed about not wanting to be isolated with me. Back atcha love, not exactly my fucking favourite thing either! Teenagers. May have to collect ds later this week, quite worried for what that will do to all of us too. He will want to go to the gym, which will be closed, he eats like a horse x 100 and he can be volatile and bad tempered. Fuck.

But I have been on the treadmill, prepped supper, done 3 loads of washing, put clean washing away, taken delivery of wine and a few other things from Waitrose (booked a week ago, no loo roll though), cleaned the top of the oven and tidied up a bit. DULL STUFF HEY?

I’m thinking of writing a load of positive and cheerful stuff on post its and putting them up in my hall corridor.

Frouby, shall we have a new thread? And shall we try to stay positive on it, if possible?
