Anyone got a Barbour?

Debtfreeme · Yesterday 23:19

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

That will last you years.

They're more for Spring and Autumn than the depths of Winter

Autumnallaround · Today 09:05

Just here to add, they are very on trend with the kids. My DD bought a fake barbour from a charity shop. I think it's a millets version.

She wears it in London with full makeup and tiny handbag.

I would love one but DH wears one and I've no intention of going out like hilda and Harold. 😁

Palepinkish · Today 09:17

I love the look and the brand but found them to be cold and messy - the wax stained everything and the they feels stiff and uncomfortable to me but maybe they need to be worn in over years.

I do like my barbour but like many others have said, the wax ones are not that warm
Wish I'd bought a Musto now, they are up to the job

Ohnobackagain · Today 09:26

Not so keen on the turn back/roll up cuffs @Debtfreeme and prefer the Acorn or similar myself. Years ago had a Beaufort which was great. But it will definitely last and what matters is that you like it - so enjoy treating yourself and I hope you get a lot of pleasure out of it.

I was coming on to warn the OP about driving in a Barbour, unless they're done something about the wax, they are a nightmare on car seats, late OH ruined our seats this way.

Newyearawaits · Today 09:34

Go for it OP.
I don't own a land-rover either 😁
I treated myself a couple of years ago.

Arregaithel · Today 09:36

@Autumnallaround had to google Hilda & Harold 🤭

Try it on before you buy! I have a Beadnell and I had to go up 3 sizes!

This. The cut is very neat.

PingPong91 · Today 09:43

That's lush!

I've had my barbour for 20 years. Absolutely love it, it's so comfortable and soft now and still looks good. A proper investment!

Nutmuncher · Today 09:45

TK Maxx often have Barbour OP

JanuaryLove · Today 09:49

The waxed ones are great - I have mine re done with them but you can buy the wax and do it yourself, yes it smells but I like it! I wear one of those heated gilets under mine. They are excellent wind proof coats. I had to buy a separate hood for mine as it didn't come with one. Gosh mine is years old now but definitely doesn't look it. Here's a funny story I have one called peninsula and when I phoned about a re wax the woman called it a pen-in-shooo-lar and it's since been called that every winter for the last 15 years 😂

Momon45 · Today 09:49

We have them donated quite often into the charity shop I work in . Why do they always smell so awful ? I usually put gloves on to handle them , is it the wax or can they not be washed ?

Weeellokthen · Today 09:51

V similar to mine and I love it. The only downside is no hood and I live in Scotland 😂

formigas · Today 09:54

I used to have one but got rid of it. I didn't mind the rewaxing but it did really pong after a few years. I also found it far too hot for most spring and autumn days (it made me very sweaty unless I was just standing still for ages) and not warm enough for winter (and not meant for winter IMO).

CurlewKate · Today 10:02

I love them. Trouble is,I don’t have one at the moment, and I come from an age and class that can’t wear a new one and am searching on Vinted to no avail!

DancingFerret · Today 10:14

I have three Barbours - all old and well used. They're great coats, but you do need some sort of secondary insulation in the depths of winter.

DH has a Barbour Beauchamp and getting him to part with it would require surgery.

Pollyanna123456 · Today 10:18

Yes I have this one in olive and love - thoroughly recommend.

I did get a slightly different style to start with (this was about 10 years ago) but it was too short when I wore it with a chunky jumper. So ended up selling that as I never used it. So yes make sure you try it on with whatever you would normally wear it with!

HedgerowD · Today 10:23

I love mine. Like other have said you need to layer. I wear mine on walks so I appreciate that it isn't a super warm padded jacket.

StylishAndBeautiful · Today 10:28

They're heavy, smelly, not particularly warm, not washable, slightly greasy, and need regular reproofing.

They're classics and last decades if looked after. Reproofing is not difficult - the wax costs about £11 and will do many re-proofings.

Try the jacket on before buying. Wear a big woolly jumper or something when you do as you don't want it to be a snug fit.

Spaniels4Eva · Today 10:35

I've got several, the only thing I'd say with the wax ones is to get it a size bigger (they're not generous in arm length) so you can wear a gilet or a fleece underneath as they're not remotely warm enough for winter dog walking. I do love mine though, the pockets are brilliant.

I got a bargain last year from JL for a longer length one with a House of Hackney floral lining. It was half price after Christmas. It's my favourite coat ever, and I won't wear it dog walking in case it gets muddy!

Strangesally20 · Today 08:11

I have one and love it, can’t imagine parting with it but I will be honest, for me it’s an incredibly impractical coat! I live in Scotland so useless for warmth, no hood and it rains constantly here, I don’t find it particularly comfortable, they’re quite stiff. I wear more when I’m looking for that “look” not because it’s a really great coat! Nonetheless it makes me happy even if I’m cold wet and uncomfortable.

I'm.exactly the same only in the West of Ireland. It's not very practical but I put it on and immediately feel great, it is as flattering as outdoor clothing gets and is a classic for a reason. I have never worn if but that multiple people have admired it. Call me shallow but I like that!

PetrichorPam · Today 11:05

OP, I have one very similar to that, which I bought about 3 years ago and I love it. I also bought a zip-in gilet/waistcoat which adds warmth without too much bulk. It’s been my go-to ever since.
