Anyone got a Barbour?

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

I made the mistake of hanging one up on the back of a door and later realised that the wall behind the door had absorbed the wax and created a large grease spot. It was a lovely jacket but it did not fit my largely urban life!

LuckyHazelFox · 08/10/2026 17:20

I swear by the brand. I have a navy blue lightweight jacket and a dark brown quilted thicker one for walking. You get what you pay for.

Worth going to the factory shop at South Shields if near there to try full range

I keep meaning to go on my way home but haven't managed to leave school early enough yet 😅

definitely try on if you can!

the beadnell hits my hips on the most unflattering way, and the longer style (can't remember for the life of me what's it's called?) is much, much better. It also means that when I sit on a park bench, my bum doesn't get wet 😃

I've had one for nearly 20 years. It was one of the first with the Liberty lining and I actually think it looks better now than when it was new. I even had a matching hood made with the Liberty lining which pleases me greatly. I had about 5 years off wearing it when those big duvet coats were in but I got it back out again this autumn.

I want to get one of the purple cropped ones which are out this season but I just can't afford current prices and I can't really justify it as a treat when my old one is still going strong.

You do not need a purple cropped one. I can see it being a 'what possessed me?' purchase.

Yes, I love mine, they last forever. Not sure what mine is, but it has a hood with fur edging. I do sometimes wish I’d bought a slightly longer one to keep my rear warm.
Theres an outlet at Braintree if that helps you.

Debtfreeme · 08/10/2026 18:18

Wow! Thank you so much for the very amazing and so many responses.

thanks so much for the size up recommendation’s I had it in my head they came up big. Some good bargains on Vinted but with the smell it’s putting me off a bit.

i thought I would have one response and people would be saying it’s ridiculous due to the price!

This family love barbour. Coats. Bags. Wellies. Shirts. Jumpers. My kids had barbour padded jackets when little. Im onto my 2nd, this one not waxed. Great for dog walking. At one point the 2 dogs had barbour harnesses 🤣🤣 we have an outlet about 10 miles away and you've just reminded me I need a pre Christmas visit!

CandidGoldRobin · 08/10/2026 18:45

I have a few and am a fan. My favourite one was a Sherpa lined olive green wax one with a hood, I wore it in all weathers until it had holes through the pockets and was too small post baby (which took about 15 years). Also have a few beadnell’s in various colours and an international, like others have said the unlined ones are not warm but great for layering. I do prefer them after a few years when they soften and look worn in, they hang better.

Springbuck · 08/10/2026 18:45

I used to work in a Barbour outlet store more than twenty years ago
We were very fortunate that we could buy any coats we wanted for a fiver. So I now own about twelve Barbour jackets in different styles and materials.
They all look as new. My favourite now is a camel cashmere/ wool jacket that looks and feels amazing.
The only one that didn’t last was a silk, wax utility that was my favourite. I stupidly wore it daily for dog walking and the elbows wore out.
I absolutely think you should get one op.

Biggles27 · 08/10/2026 18:59

Mine is 20 years old this year - two years ago it went to Barbour for a wax & repair. Came back as good as new

Ohnobackagain · 08/10/2026 19:03

Oh yes @Debtfreeme don’t forget the outlet shops!

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 19:19

@Debtfreeme , go into a shop and smell one. The smell gets stronger with age but you get used to it. It's not bad just distinctive.

@Biggles27 , about how much did it cost?

£100

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 20:18

Thanks @Biggles27 . Sounds like it was worth it.

Seajaye · 08/10/2026 20:37

I've got one, with a liberty print lining. Without the zip in fleece liner it's rare for the weather to be just right to wear it regularly, butbit is a good weekend coat for me, asand although it may be steroetyical it is good spring and autumn jacket for countryside walks or on the sea front where might rain but not get overly cold. If it's really cold and wet I do wear a thicker warmer waterproof coat .

It really was!

Papyrophile · 08/10/2026 20:42

I bought mine in the early 1990s, and now it's been commandeered by DS who just took it for repairs and to get the sleeves lengthened. The staff in the local Barbour shop cooed over it as the quality of the fabric back then was so much better.

I definitely would avoid a second hand one unless it's been worn sparingly. It's sure to smell of someone else's B.O. a bit. I think the only thing you can use on them is febreeze?

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 21:01

I wouldn't be spraying anything with Febreze. You can spot clean the lining.

Frenzi · 08/10/2026 21:17

I live in mine in the winter.

I have a long one (I have horses) that I wear in the winter to just try to stay dry. A plain shorter one for dog walking and a nice trendy one for going out.

Look after them and they will last ages (I send mine off to be re-waxed every year. DH doesn't and his are in a right state and he now gets wet if it rains heavily).

Caniweartheseones · 08/10/2026 21:35

If you love it get it. However Barbour is no longer the old Barbour but has been bought by a Chinese company that makes low quality versions of classic styles.
The boots fall apart in weeks. It’s like Doc Martens. Very sad.

Probably why there’s now so much of it in TKs

Barbour hasn't been bought by a Chinese company.
The boots are made in China and Vietnam.

I agree about DMs. I wear Solovairs, Made in Northamptonshire.
